Receiver Sidney Rice (shoulder) will miss Sunday’s game at Pittsburgh, coach Pete Carroll said after Friday’s Seahawks practice. He said Rice got enough work in this week to make him envision a return next week at home against Arizona.
Robert Gallery (knee) will start at left guard after missing last week, however, allowing rookie James Carpenter to move back to right tackle. Asked if Carpenter would share some time with Breno Giacomini (who started there last week), Carroll said that would depend on how the game progresses.
With Rice out, rookie receiver Kris Durham will likely be active, Carroll said.
Carroll addressed a couple areas of emphasis this week after the 33-17 loss at San Francisco highlighted some unit weaknesses.
With quarterback Tarvaris Jackson getting sacked five times, the protection from the youthful offensive line was an obvious issue. “We did a couple things,” Carroll said. “Tom (Cable, line coach) really struck a note with the fellas about finishing at the line of scrimmage better than we had.” Carroll said that players had been so concerned about assignments that they might have been less focused on being physical. “(Cable) did a couple things and the guys understdood it and it absolutely showed up on the practice field this week,” Carroll said. “I’m really anxious to see that generate a little something different for us.”
The other prime area of concern were special teams units that gave up two returns for touchdowns last week. Compounding the issue are injuries to core special teams performers Mike Robinson (ankle), Bryan Maxwell (ankle), Malcolm Smith (hamstring) and Dexter Davis (hip). “We have some changes … we have four core guys who aren’t playing this week, so we have a lot of work to catch guys up.”
When asked about Smith and Davis more specifically, Carroll added that “Dexter has a problem hip.” Davis officially was listed as out, while Smith is doubtful.
Carroll has had the Seahawks meeting, lifting and practicing early this week in preparation for a East Coast game, as the Hawks have gone 1-10 in the last 11 games in that time zone. “We’ve had a very solid week in preparation,” he said. “We’ve asked the guys to make a commitment to the time frames we’ve adjusted to and everybody did it to a tee … it was well–received and executed. We take off today, a day early. Tomorrow we’ll have our normal work and meetings … so we’re ready to go.”
For competition sake, I’m glad our group keeps the injury reports close to the vest. But as a fan, I wish I knew wtf was up with Rice. Jersey be-damned, I hope I didn’t jinx us with that purchase.

I know I’m about to speak blasphamy as far as BobbyK is concerned but why am I having visions of Rice as Branch 2.0? Got his big payday, will never see the field, and will then go back to the team he ‘really’ wanted to play for with a fat pocketbook. And just like Branch he’ll suddenly become the player Seattle paid for AFTER he’s left.

Very excited to see the OLine this week. Gallery should help, and provide leadership.

Chuck- As I have no reason to believe the D Branch was “playing” us, I think it’s more likely that we weren’t using him right. Also, Brady tends to make everyone look good. I do agree with your hope that Rice isn’t a perpetual injury.

WTF is with Rice, couple series in Preseason? Take a shot and man up…

Branch played until he tore his ACL. I don’t believe that had anything to do with getting paid. Only upon returning from that did all the nagging injuries begin. And that was frustrating. It’s not as though he was Alexander who, after getting paid, “broke” his foot against Detroit and refused medical treatment, in favor of “praying on it” that it would heal.
As for Rice, the fact no definitive answer has been forthcoming regarding the nature of his shoulder injury, I’m becoming more concerned he could miss significant time, including the season. Paranoid? Perhaps.

SandpointHawk – How do we know he hasn’t taken a shot? We don’t know anything anout it, with is concerning (at least to me).

I know this is probably just dreaming, but I had this vision of a win Sunday. And it came running the ball for close to 200 yards. And now I read that Cable has changed some things up (simplified?) so they can be more physical. You don’t suppose we have a chance do we? maybe? I can dream right?

True dat Duke, I don’t know a damn thing about this injury…
I can guess we gave this guy a physical, and he’s played what…15 minutes for us so far?
But I long for the days that football players played the game.
Remember when Jack Youngblood played the game with a broken leg?
I expect them to bring out the flags (flag football) any day now.

I wouldn’t play injured the way this league takes care of retirees. Although I would be very happy for the Hawks if they didn’t spend big bucks on often injured players or players past thier prime.

The season from hell. I hate waiting to get a real QB. I know it has to be done, but it sucks.

I’m kind of with you on this – weird that we can’t get info as to what this is beyond a ‘sore shoulder’. If he came in as damaged goods, then we’ve been had.

Interesting speculation. Since Curry has no guaranteed money past this year, it seems likely he’s going to be traded. Whether we get anything of value for him is another matter entirely.
I think our offensive line will look better with Gallery in the mix. He brings a nasty demeanor and he is pretty much the master of vicious but legal cut-blocks.
As for Rice, even if he is injury prone he will never be as bad an acquisition as Branch. Rice has shown elite ability and the skill to be an unquestioned #1 WR. Branch on the other hand never had even a single 1,000 yard season, a Pro-Bowl appearance, or anything to indicate he could be a great WR for a season. Super Bowl MVP just means he showed up for one game, with the great Tom Brady throwing to him. Not to mention he’s a 5’9″ and thin midget with no physicality at all. And that MORON Ruskell traded a FIRST ROUND PICK for the right to pay that loser a huge contract.

Yeah, It’s going to hurt bad if Rice is out for awhile. I mean sure, the team could really use him, but what about my damn Rice jersey!?
× Flag comment
Yeah, still makes me a little stomach-sick when I think of trading a first round pick for Branch. Man, that’s laughable.

Now don’t be sad, cause 2 outa 3 aint bad………

Looking back trading Branch for a #1 pick seems stupid but remember that trade was done after a season in which we went to the Super Bowl. It looked at that time all we needed was another reciever to put us over the top. So even knowing it was maybe not the best trade, I think the mentallity was more trading a #1 pick for a Super Bowl ring. However we now know losing Huch that off season was the underestimated and Alexander was no longer the R.B. he was the previous year.
Don’t get me wrong I’m not trying to defend Tim Ruskell cause I think he destroyed what Holmgren built and he’s a bone head. Just trying to put things into perspective.

Everyone is talking about how nasty pittsburgh’s defense is etc… I don’t think it’s too off the cuff to say that San Francisco’s Patrick Willis led defense isn’t far off from Pittsburgh’s.

Nothin’ cheers me up like a good Meatloaf quote. Much needed, thanks!
I know everyone wants to hear about my jersey issue, soooo…
Yeah, I’m having buyers regret and wishing I had got an ET jersey instead. But maybe Luck will be able to get Rice the ball next season when he’s fully healthy!? Then my jersey would be wearable. I know, I know…we won’t be bad enough to draft #1. >.<
On the "bright" side, my long sleeve flourescent green 'Hawks shirt is sweeet!
Just out of curiousity…how many jerseys do ya'll have/wear? Maybe I need a throwback jersey I can rely on every year…

That’s all spot on.

When all else fails, and it seems like it will (Hass, Tatupu and Curry jerseys), I whip out the monstrous #96, though it’s a few sizes too big.
Looks like #29 is the next one in line…

Maybe the rationale wasn’t bad but the player acquired was an awful target. Smart FOs do things like trade for WRs Randy Moss, Anquan Boldin, Lee Evans, Brandon Marshall for a lesser cost than trash like Deion Branch. Of course, Ruskell would have never wanted those guys over Branch because he’s allergic to talent and would prefer constructing a team filled with overachieving midgets with marginal skill.

I only have two jerseys: Hass and ET.

Isn’t it true that Rice wouldnt let any team give him a physical before signing him?
Alexander praying instead of medical treatment? is that true or are you just spreading manure about somebody you dont like??
it really pisses me off that some of you sit here and cry everyday about jackson/curry/whomever. it’s like non-stop nagging from the wife..

No, his signing was pending a cleared physical.
And it sounds like you should work on your relationship with your wife instead of commenting here.
