Quick notes after Sunday practice

The Hawks didn’t seem to have the energy they had at yesterday’s practice. Again, a lot of guys were not in action: Maxwell, Sims, Alford, Cole, Allen, Lewis, Durham, THurmond, Reed, Konz, Carlson, Baldwin.

DT Ladi Ajiboye was not here and presumably released (pending official word). They added a running back No 47 named Taua. I presume that’s former Nevada running back Vai Taua, who was cut by the Bills recently. Ajiboye was quickly resigned before the San Diego game to help with defensive line depth.

In one-on-one passing, Tate and Lockette both had impressive catches. Against coverage by Jesse Hoffman, Tate reached back, speared one and pulled it for a touchdown, while Lockette beat Marcus Brown and pulled in a tipped ball for a score.

Marcus Trufant continued his strong camp on Sunday, with the highlight being a pass deflection at the goal line against 6-4 Sidney Rice. I wonder if practicing against Rice every day is a positive challenge for Trufant. If so, he’s surely responding.

All three quarterbacks looked good, but Charlie Whitehurst had another very strong practice when he passed with improved confidence. He gunned one into a small window to Pat Williams, and also was accurate on a couple short passes to the backs that he had missed on occasionally earlier in camp.

Earl Thomas made another big play, intercepting Tarvaris Jackson on a pass intended for Lockette.

Okung, too. Forgot to mention. He was in a ballcap again. Just watching, but not appearing to noticeably limp as he walked on the sidelines.

  2. Dukeshire says:

Dave, A week or so ago I speculated about the effect on Tru going up against Rice would have. You’ve got to believe it’s a huge positive. No?

Vai Taua would make some sense to bring in. At FB I presume?

Dave, also, despite Carroll naming Jackson opening game starter, do you think CW can pry the job away? Or is it up to Jackson to lose during the regular season, period? (Just looking for your overall impression…) Thanks!

  3. Ewalters7354 says:

Let’s go Charlie!Good to hear he is practicing with confidence. It would be so lovely if he can be a good QB for us so that can justify us giving up so much for him.Pete has shown he is not afraid to go against his word and bench Tjack if Charlie beats him out.Looking forward to this competition through the rest of preseason.

I also am glad to hear that Tru is having a strong camp.Practicing against Sid Rice is making him better.I seen that when he was covering Vincent Jackson.

C’mon Walter. You are gonna lose that job if that ankle keeps you out.The competition is getting real tough buddy.

  4. Dave Boling says:

On the Whitehurst question: Carroll double-spoke a little bit on that topic Saturday after practice. He cited Charlie’s play in the game and in practice, and said that he’s getting up to speed quicker than expected. He was asked if that meant the thing would be open for competition soon. No, he said, it’s just as it was, Tarvaris is the starter. Coaches are so skittish about any perceived controversy that they can sound a bit neurotic. He’s trying to let Tarvaris get the feeling that he doesn’t have to look over his shoulder, but also try to keep Charlie engaged in the battle. I think Tarvaris has some reasonable leash before it would become an issue.

  5. I’m a little concerned about all the interceptions at practice. It doesn’t say much about the QB and receivers getting in sync. After all, the secondary really didn’t light any fires Thursday night against the Bolts. Hoping it’s just a learning phase the offense is going thru.

  6. Ewalters7354 says:

Teruski,it’s practice bro. Those things happen.I actually thought our secondary played well except for the big play that was due to blown coverage and also Kelly Jennings smh.

  7. Ewalters7354 says:

Eric,is that the same Michael Johnson whom the Bengals drafted a few years ago?

  8. ZombieLatics says:

Picking off Jackson isn’t a big play, it just means Thomas can catch passes thrown right at him.

  9. Soggybuc says:

teruski defense is always a head of offenses in camp and pre-season so i’m not worried really. the SD game was very nice in how the hawks avoided turnovers.

@ Duke, I would not get too worked up over them showing such a vanilla 4-3 look for 2 reasons. 1 a lot of new faces to get on the same page and base is what these guys have known since HS and 2 gamesmanship! game one is a road game vs a division rival. wont surprise me one bit if they are going to make sure Alex Smith and Harbaugh have next to nothing on film that will clue them in to what we are going to run.
While some practices are open to the public there are many that are not and who knows what wrinkles they work on in those. hard to say just what cool things Eric and Dave see but can not divulge as the Sergeant Schultz rule very much applies.

  10. williambryan says:

    zombie, lol

  11. williambryan says:

Soggybuc, although that makes perfect sense, I think it doesn’t apply to Pete Carroll. He has stated in coaching clinics and other interviews that the 4-3 under is the only defense HE completely believes in. He has always ran it and always will run it (again, these are things he has said).

Duke (and others), I think what may be happening is PC is letting Wash have his go at what he thinks will work best. Carroll is almost outnumbered by old Buc’s coaches on defense it seams, with Wash and Bradley. I think the base defense will remain the 4-3 under but the question then, to me, is how much base will they play? All of our division opponents are pro style/ WCO teams so I would assume the team will be in base a lot. What do you think?

  12. How goes the kicking competition between Reed and Coutu?

  13. Dukeshire says:

Soggy – Very well could be. And I’ve noted it’s something interesting to keep an eye on rather than any type of certainty, for some of the reasons you mentioned.

However, calling it vanilla sells what we saw short, IMO. It was a clear shift in philosophy for at least a half, for any number of reasons. But the most significant thing to note here (at least IMO) is Curry at weak side and the Will in nickel. That’s very interesting, to me.

IMO, if we see the 1s again playing an over front on the line and Curry at Will and Hill at strong side again this Saturday, we’ll get a very clear indication where this defense is headed.

As for the “gamesmanship” you mentioned; something to that. If some beer swilling fan sitting on his couch with his golden retriever laying next to him (that’s me, by the way) can identify what you’re doing on defense, you can bet your ass OCs around the NFL get it. If the ‘Hawks have multiple 4-3 fronts they can use effectively, the more difficult it will be to pick at the a given weakness.

Anyway, I studying schemes and fundamentals and this is just a part of that. (In other words, I do get worked up about these things. I’m Col. Clink to Eric and Dave’s Sgt. Schultz, as it were…)

  14. Rooting for Charlie all the way! I’ll say it again, the guy needs repetitions! If it’s somewhat difficult for a 10+ year veteran like Hasselbeck to learn a new offense, terminology and OC…..how is it for someone like Whitehurst with limited experience? I hope he’s getting more comfortable with the offense. Let’s wait and see what he’s capable of with a good supporting cast.

  15. Dukeshire says:

williambryan – Don’t forget; Bradley and Wash worked with Monte Kiffen in Tampa. Carroll’s defensive mentor. And Carroll has also said that the 4-3 under has morphed and evolved over the years. But anyway, as I’ve said several times now, this was one half of the first preseason game after just 2 weeks of camp. But it’s something I’ll be keeping an eye on…

  16. Mr. Happy and Kiffin (Mr. Looney) have worked together plenty, too. It’s going to be interesting to see how this shakes out with the players we’ve got.

  17. At least Portis is (so far) making this pre season interesting.

  18. Soggybuc says:

Duke that was some funny stuff =) It does lead one to wonder if they are experimenting with some differant looks and variations of the basic Monte theme.
Pete worked with Monte early on where as these younger guys cut their teeth on much later versions of the Tampa 2. truth is if you’re gonna play around with your schemes pre season is the place to do it.

Was it just me or did we not seem to be playing press early and had a lot of “off” play to the outside? is that because Tru and Kelly are just not good press corners or was it because despite Pete’s penchant for that style Rivers dictates the respect to play it off and safe?

  19. williambryan says:

I have wondered about that. Even when Mora cam in as coach, he talked alot about getting Tru and Jennings to jam at the line because they had the speed to do that. However it never happened. They both continue to give a lot of cushion. But once the 2nd and 3rd guys came in there was a lot of press. I have to imagine that if Trufant was told to press and didn’t, his playing time would be diminished at the least? I’m not sure what to make of that situation.

  20. LeePridemore says:

300 Jet Deep Cross You Gotta Be Kiddin’ On Two

These comments read like chatter at a Cambridge study hall. Are all of you staff members for Norm Dicks? I thought I was the only weirdo who knew how to spell Koutouvides.

I had to register after reading this intense wonk fest. I have some issues (hate ‘niners) that I’m trying to work out and will try not to bulldoze this dollhouse with my authentic brand of football induced hemophiladelphia.

The Seahawks are going to win a lot of games this season. Don’t be late for the bus. You hear me Dukefryer?

  21. This is all very high level stuff. Even better than the Wall Street Journal.

  22. Dukeshire says:

LeePridemore – Oh I read you loud and clear, big boy. (BTW, incredible Norm Dicks drop. Cheers)

  23. Before PC annointed TJ as the starter, I had high hopes for Charlie. I expected him to be the starting QB. But when PC picked TJ, I thought that Charlie might be on the way out. Now I’m optimistic again.

I don’t really care who starts, I just want solid, mistake-free play from the QB and I’m more confident about getting it from Charlie. But we’ll see …

  24. freedom_X says:

What concerns me is that last preseason, Trufant also looked fantastic. I thought he had returned to Pro Bowl form. He was making plays and covering superbly. But he lost it by game 4. So I am only cautiously optimistic.

  25. Interesting that our #2 and #3 QBs are making more noise in camp than TJ.

  26. Two points:
We traded a 3rd round pick for CW – despite the over-reaction by the uninformed media, this was not giving up a lot for a potential starting QB.

Tru and Jennings and press coverage: IMO they aren’t strong enough to pull it off and stay with their man. Can’t see Pete playing politics with his staff on such an essential defensive philosophy.

  27. Hawks also traded back in the second round for CW.
    spot 40 – 500 points
    to 60 – 300
    equivalent to a third round 78 – 200 points.
In the draft it would have made available Oak DE Lamarr Houston or Den G Zane Beadles and of coarse 20 others. Golden Tate slipped to 60 so not a bad pick up.

  28. Southendzone says:

Hey, can we all agree not to call an interception of Tavaris Jackson a “BIG PLAY”? It’s misleading and while it’s complimentary to the DB, it’s not fair to other DB’s in the league that are working against a true NFL starter.

It’s a little like when the baseball announcers are talking about a dominating pitching performance by whoever is going against the Mariners this year.
