Had a quick chat with Max Unger this morning. Column about it will be in the TNT in the morning.

His foot is fine. His rehab was not impeded by the lockout since he was cleared to play by the end of last season and did not need further work from the training staff.

Unger said he’d never been hurt before so it was hard to have to watch his teammates play last season. He also concedes it was not easy — when people asked why he missed the season — to have to answer: Toe injury.

They called it “Turf toe,” but he said it involved tearing all the tendons down there.

He said that having no OTAs or minicamps will make it really tough on the rookie linemen on the right side. He remembers back to his rookie season when he learned so much of what being a pro was about before he even got to training camp. They all will suffer, he said, from not having the time to spend with Tom Cable. He calls Cable “a real football guy.” I think the translation is that he has high expectations for toughness. The new scheme, though, definitely “is different.”

He’s fine with the move from guard to center, and likes the leadership responsibilities that come with it.

The guy is very good interview and reminds me a great deal of Robbie Tobeck.

On the personal side, he said he’s engaged to be married next year. His fiance is a former 400-meter hurdler at Oregon who has been a volunteer assistant coach with the UW track team.

Eric: Can you speak at all to his conditioning and what shape he seems to be in? I realize you didnt put him through a workout, but does it look like he has been working, or like he has been sitting on the coach eating chips?

  2. SandpointHawk says:

M’s win….you might fell this is off topic and it is but it’s important to Seattle fans…

  3. Unger mentioned it would be hard on the right side rookies. Surprised he didn’t mention himself. He missed all of last season and hadn’t played the center position since college.

So what is the story on Chris Spencer. Some of these FA’s haven’t seen much action. Locklear is a mid tear LT. Things must not be getting reported until deals are being made.

  4. Soggybuc says:

    They have fans left Sandpoint??

They havent made any moves in 2 hours now getting ridiculous. WE NEED MORE MOVES! quit being so lazy Pete!

Good to hear Max is healed and ready to go.

  5. so far,
    Matt > TEN
    Herring > NO
    Mare > CAR
    Stokely > DC
    anybody else?

  6. GeorgiaHawk says:

When are we going to get some D-line signings? Enough with the offense!

Since they have moved the kickoffs up to the 35 yard line this year the need for a strong legged kicker like Mare is less a priority.

  7. I’m curious about Leroy as well, I think we should grab him again for the hell of it. I loved the way he smashed people, maybe Curry could take some notes. So we got Gallery, who else do we have up there, and what’s are D line going to look like?

  8. Besides the youngsters of course (talking about the OL)

  9. GeorgiaHawk says:

Here is some info on some of our new undrafted rookies.

  10. Dukeshire says:

Hopefully we’ll start getting some of the draftees signed here soon.

  11. According to this guy, we’re supposed to be close to a deal with Rice:

  12. Ewalters7354 says:

Excile,He played center for us his rookie year. The last two starts and did very well.So I think he’ll be ok.

  13. The news on Mebane doesn’t sound good. Sounds like Denver will make him a big offer. I’m not as high on him as others on this board are and would even say he’s redundant with both Red Bryant and Colin Cole (assuming Cole is healthy) as starters.

  14. Dave Boling says:

    HawkfaninMT …

How’s he look? Large. He still has room for more, too. He’s every bit of 6-5 and is 305, which appears pretty lean. He has those really thick calves you like in a center/guard. He said he’s been working out, but it’s never quite the same when you’re not with the coaches.

  15. We really need better pressure from the 3-tech position, but other than Mebane we’d be getting less pressure from other UFA DTs available.

  16. Ewalters7354 says:

I would love for us to get Rice.An elite, young talent.Only thing is the damn Vikes are fighting us tooth and nail so I hope he decides to come to the Hawks.Plus the Cards are traso that would trading Cromartie o the Eagles so that will us an edge against them.Kolb sucks.

  17. Since Cole may start on the PUP, maybe Mebane could go back to his NT spot, and pick up Rocky Bernard for the 3-tech? I know he’s maybe lost a step, bu he’s better than what else I’d seen available so far. . .

  18. The great Josh Wilson has signed with the Redskins for $13.5 million over three years, with $6 million guaranteed.

  19. Tarcat88 says:

It would be nice to see us signing the rooks soon. We need to get them all in here asap. Rice would be a huge upgrade AND we need Mebane! We should be able to afford both.

  20. I sure wish JS hadn’t let Mebane see free agency. Broncos have a big need at DT and will overpay $alot to get Brandon.

  21. Josh Wilson went to DC.

  22. HawkfaninMT says:

Thanks Dave, I apologize for not checking your name as author

  23. Dukeshire says:

I don’t see any redundancy with Menane. Of the three he’s the only one that can play 3 tech and as klm points out, with Cole out his ability to play NT becomes more important. Then there’s the question of who would fill his shoes capably and at what cost. For me, he’s always been the top FA priority. It would disappointing and counterproductive to let young talent like him walk, IMO.

  24. Dukeshire says:

    Mebane…

  25. Oops – Nate Clements hasn’t been cut by the 9ers, according to his agent.

  26. Ewalters – I see now that Unger and Spencer switched position the final 3 games. They lost those games but rushed for well over a hundred in all. Still, 3 games isn’t many. Missing OTA’s will have to effected him and this o’line that has never played together in an NFL season game.

Duke – if they were to sign Jenkins who would play Coles NT position?

  27. Ewalters7354 says:

Lol…That’s John Elway making his Tim Ruskell impression.Overpay solid players.I want the Hawks to get him back but not over pay him.He is a solid but not great player. So we should offer him solid money. On another I’m not sure how Josh Wilson is gonna fit in DC.

  28. “Pep” Livingston has apparently signed a four year deal, so the first of our rookies should be ready to go.

  29. OL: LT 1st rd, LG 1st rd, C 2nd rd, RG 3rd rd, RT 1st rd. I hope the OL shuffelling is over after the ’12 draft, getting someone to step into Gallery’s shoes, when the time comes. Then these guys could play together for a dozen years.

  30. Dukeshire says:

    excile – Good question.

  31. http://www.seahawks.com/team/roster.html
    38 Thenarse, Rickey SS 6-11 210 22 R Nebraska

    6-11?

  32. ballgame says:

Being reported that Hawks sign Rice to a 5 year deal…reported by Jay Glazer

  33. freedom_X says:

I didn’t think Mebane was really a true 3-tech tackle though – not really as quick and explosive as a prototype 3-tech would be. I would be looking to have Mebane replace Cole while Cole is injured. He’s agile for any of the other tackle positions other than 3-tech, and can fill the role of tying up o-linemen.

I keep forgetting that the Darrell Bevell connection could help bring Rice to Seattle (and explains the interest) just as it did for Jackson.

  34. Jay Glazer reports seahawks sign Sidney Rice (agree to terms) WOOT

but nobody to get him the ball!

  35. Dukeshire says:

That’s added value in his favor, to me. He can play both interior positions well. Ultimately the price has to be right. As I see it they’ve painted themselves into a corner at this point, if they really want him. Ordeals like they’ll have to “overpay” to keep him. We’ll see.

  36. Can Sidney Rice play CB? Will he be a 2 way player? Because this defense looks like crap again this year they way they are going.

  37. Schefter says: Here are WR Sidney Rice’s numbers with Seattle: fivr years up to $44 million including $18.5 million guaranteed.

  38. ChrisHolmes says:

Yay, we signed Rice and Gallery. Woot. I’d be so much more excited if we had RESIGNED MATT HASSELBECK!

I have never been more disappointed in my life as a Seahawks fan. This is a QB league. T-Jack is never taking ANY team to the Superbowl.

I can only imagine this is all so we can position ourselves for the #1 overall pick next year…

  39. @ChrisHolmes… Are you serious?? Without Matt we’re just going to take a dive and end up last in the league? Can someone set this guy straight out of you regulars? Sheesh!!!

  40. Hasselbeck is a latter-day Dilfer. Difference between Hass and TJax/CW in the ’11 season may be in the 2 to 4 games range (in the win/lose column). Hass could manage an offense loaded with playmakers to the SB, (given an awesome defense) but it would have to be those playmakers that would win a SB. Hasselbeck would be going against more elite QBs. He’s still closer to an elite QB than either CW or TJax, but he’s been getting further from it as he’s accumulated injuries. CW or TJax would have to have all of the best players in the league around them to win a SB. Wasn’t gonna happen anyway.

  41. ChrisHolmes says:

@doubter Yes, serious. We’ll end up last in the Division. I think we’ll finish bottom 5 of the NFL. Arizona will get Kolb and win the division. 49ers will be better with the new coaching staff. Rams have Bradford and could win the division if they get better receiver play (already have a good DL and almost won it last year).

We have NO QB! Whitehurst is not an NFL level QB. T-Jack is CRAP and if he could play at all he’d have already done it in Minnesota with a LOADED offense! How is he supposed to lead Seattle to the promised land?

Check the records of the franchises last year who were the bottom five. They had bad QB situations, just like we have now. Matt would have given us a legit chance to compete for a championship. Now TN has him. With Chris Johnson? Damn…

We blew it. Hope we fall to dead last so we can draft Luck. Because the 2nd pick in the draft won’t get him…

  42. @ChrisHolmes says:

“Yes, serious. We’ll end up last in the Division.”

“I can only imagine this is all so we can position ourselves for the #1 overall pick next year…”

Which is saying we’d be last in the league. So which is it, last in our division or the entire league?

In order for us to get the #1 pick, we’d have to be last in the league, and that definitely aint happening. Well, it could, but highly doubtful.

All the teams in our division are rebuilding, so it’s anyone’s division to win. I think we did great in the draft and now doing very well in free agency. I understand a quarterback is key, but Hass wasn’t always the best he can be when he started for us, just got to give these guys a chance to step up and make it happen. Time will tell.

Anyway, I’d take a bet with you that we don’t finish last in the league, let alone our division.

I live in Arizona but come to Seattle quite often.

    Go Hawks!!!
