The Seahawks add some depth at defensive back with the selection of Richard Sherman at No. 154 overall in the fifth round. At 6-foot-2, 195 pounds, Sherman is a big corner that can come in and compete for time at cornerback in Seattle’s press scheme.

Sherman also played receiver for the Cardinal, with 81 career catches.

  1. Dave Boling says:

Early notes show this guy is a 50-foot triple jumper. That’s an example of speed, but also explosiveness. Carroll had to spend some time watching him in the Pac-10. The size and athleticism are intriguing.

Has return skills, too. Has missed games after a partial tear of a patellar tendon.

Has graduated with a degree in communications.

  2. Mark Legree FS, App St, 6-0/210, 4.49-40, 21 reps, 31″ vert, 22 career picks (2nd in Southern Conference history). Made 49 tkls & defensed 8 passes his Sr yr.

  3. Dave Boling says:

Phone interview notes: Said he likes defense better than offense. Saw his NFL potential as greater as a cornerback than receiver. Laughed when asked about the big catch he had against Carroll and USC in 2007. Carroll recruited him out of high school. He decided to go to Stanford rather than USC because he wanted to make a statement to his community — Compton, CA — that athletes can achieve academic success.

This guy is really sharp. Very articulate. Obviously intelligent. He talked about the sense of brotherhood that players of a team feel. Says his strength is playing press-man coverage. Thinks he’s good in the Red Zone against the big receivers.

  4. I love this kid. He’s a stud athlete that Carroll has had his eye on for a long time. I had a hunch he could end up in Seattle, and I’m very happy. With his length and ball skills, he will look unique in a Seahawks uniform.
