The kid certainly isn’t shy about hitting…

Wow, I have complained about the play of our secondary for years, and it looks like the answer is coming! hope we get a pass rusher in FA.

  3. 6-0/202, 4.43-40, 24 reps, 33″ vert, 4.49 SS, 7.12 cone.

  4. Pat Devlin and Greg McElroy is still on the board, I think it’s time for a QB or a D-lineman with the next pick.

This guy definitely brings the pain! Dig on it!

“Strengths: Has great length and bulk for the position and possesses above-average speed. Shows a willingness to play the run. Is aggressive when taking on blocks and has no trouble shedding stalk blocks before finding the ball-carrier. Wraps up and makes sure tackles using his length. Has strong natural instincts and reads passers well in zone coverage. Attacks the ball at its highest point, wins jump balls and catches with soft hands. Physical at the line, uses his length and strength to reroute receivers off the line in press coverage.

“Weaknesses: A step late breaking on the ball and allows too much separation in man coverage. Stiff in his hips, looks tight when moving laterally. Plays back on his heels and stays too high in his backpedal, making it difficult for him to click and close on a pass. Loses acceleration when changing directions and gives up space in and out of cuts. Beaten by shiftier receivers when failing to get his hands on them at the line. Too aggressive at times, whiffs when looking to jam. Tends to look in the backfield too long and bite on play action. Takes poor angles to the runner at times, does not break down consistently well in space. Suffered a torn ACL as a high school senior.”

    Great hitter, solid tackler, press-corner.

Somebody to beat up on in the preseason, maybe makes the practice squad and the real players can beat up on him all season long.

I really hope everybody the ‘Hawks ever draft makes the Hall Of fame, but I’m thinking this guy is just practice fodder. I’d love to be wrong.

  8. Dave Boling says:

Phoner notes: Byron said he was at a movie with his girlfriend when he got the call from the Hawks. Said he was watching “Fast and Furious.” He had the phone on vibrate.

Happy about getitng the call? “I don’t know, is there a word better than happy?”

He didn’t play his senior year in HS because of a knee injury. His best attribute is his physical play, he said. Said they play mostly press coverage at Clemson.

Said he saw Charlie Whitehurst at Clemson when he came back .. “He’s got that long hair swayin’ … he’s a pretty cool guy.”

  9. Two tall CBs and a tall S. All tough press-coverage type guys.

Its more and more apparent that Carroll and Schneider have clear profiles of the types of players they like for this team makeover There will soon be No short technique cover guys in our backfield any longer. Bye-bye Kelly ‘the smurf’ Jennings.

  10. Dukeshire says:

DBs under 6′ and 200lbs need not apply. lol

I kind of dised (if that’s a word) Byron Maxwell a few moments ago, let me retract that a little bit. I would think if there is any position where you could tell a talented young guy to just go out and play, it should be in the defensive secondary.

If a well built, long, tall, fast kid can be taught his assignments and told simply “Don’t let ‘that guy’ catch a pass” maybe this kid will turn out alright. Here’s hoping so, anyway.
