  1. One thing I would have a big problem with is taking a 3-tech at #25 if it meant allowing Brandon Mebane to leave via free agency. It would make no sense to draft a DT at #25, only to let Mebane leave.

Lets see, we lose a good player, and possibly add a bit better of a player? In a realistic world, our #25 pick would probably be better rushing the passer than Mebane (probably not as a rookie), but worse at stopping the run.

In the grand scheme of things, we’d be losing a good player and adding a good player. We have plenty of areas where we already have crappy players and I would personally like to add a good player to take over for a bad player than getting rid of a good player so we can draft someone in the 1st round to take over for him.

I would be okay with a 3-tech at #25 if we kept Mebane and had a rotation where Mebane would/could play both inside tackle positions (or something). I know, ideally, he’d want to bulk up to fill in for Cole, but I think he’d be great anyways. Personally, I have always thought he played his best before moving to the 3-tech (and losing some weight). Maybe he’d need to add 10 lbs. I don’t know.

I don’t want to lose a good player if it means adding a good player. I only want to lose a bad player and to replace him with a good player. That makes the most sense.

  2. Dukeshire says:

He’s a good player but fairly one-dimensional. I agree that should they draft a 3-tech at #25, they ought to keep Mebane. But they need a player who can penetrate as well as handle the run. At this point, Mebane seems better suited to NT or run situations. I would love a Liuget, Cole, Mebane rotation, as an example.

  3. With as much rotation as there is on the defensive line, I don’t see anything wrong with having three starters at DT, even though only two can be on the field at once. Look what happened when one of Mebane or Cole weren’t in the line-up last year. It sucked and those guys need to rotate in/out. It’s not like having Hutch and Jahri Evans at guard and wanting to draft another guard in the 1st round. That would be pointless because that player would never see the field, but at DT there will be plenty of playing time for all involved.
