ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting running back/kick return Leon Washington has signed a 4-year deal to remain in Seattle.

According to Schefter’s report, Washington signed a four-year, $12.5 million contract that could reach $16 million with incentives.

The Seahawks have not confirmed the report, but a deal is imminent.

Signing Washington was considered a priority of Seattle because of the significant role that he played as a return specialist. Coming off a a gruesome leg injury that ended his 2009 season, Seattle received Washington in a draft-day trade with the N.Y. Jets, and he made an immediate impact.

Washington finished with three kick returns for touchdowns during the regular season. He also had an 84-yard punt return against Carolina.

Washington also was a positive influence in the locker room, and judging from the number of years and amount of financial commitment by Seattle, look for Washington to have more or a role on the offensive side of the ball next season.

    This is pretty uplifting news.

That signing of Washington is as big as getting Hass signed. I think a healthy Washington, going through camp will be huge this season. Washington was an under utilized asset. That boy needs the ball in his hand often. Hopefully the coaches see him as much more than the returner.

  5. Does this mean we’re finally going to see his ass in the backfield?

  6. Hefty contract for a return man but only 3.5M guaranteed. Hawks already had Golden Tate who could have handled the special teams returns. So now how will Justin Forsett fit in. Guess it doesn’t really matter until he becomes a FA in 2012.

Now we need some work done to that powerless/porous offensive line. Can’t wait to see Marshawn unleashed into the defense second tier so he can go Beastly. Leave them beaten and Lynched as he did to the Saints. Oh my! What a run that was.

According to Pro Football Talk it’s only $3.5 mil in guaranteed money as well. This is a good deal for both sides and I hope to see Leon more involved in the offense next year, in addition to his always brilliant ST play.

  8. Good to have him back!

I’ve been out of the loop for most of the day and this is as good of news as I could have come back to. Awesome! Great, great work all involved.

  10. Definitely happy to hear that news. I think our Top 3 free agents were Hasselbeck, Mebane, and Washington.

So to start working out deals with these players before the deadline is great news!

  11. YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
