Smith

The Seattle Seahawks have hired Carl Smith as the team’s new quarterbacks coach, replacing Jedd Fisch, who left to take the offensive coordinator position at the University of Miami.

Smith, 62, served as quarterbacks coach for Cleveland last year, but has some history with Seattle head coach Pete Carroll, serving as his quarterbacks coach at New England, and also with USC in 2004.

Check out his bio here.

As far as the day goes, I’m hoping to catch up with Carroll at some point today. Auburn quarterback Cam Newton is scheduled to talk to reporters today, along with Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallet. And we should have some action on the field at Lucas Oil Stadium, with combine drills happening today. We’ll also be talking to defensive linemen and linebackers in the media room.

Rob Rang of NFLDraftScout.com thinks Florida offensive lineman Mike Pouncey would be a perfect fit for Seattle.

Clare Farnsworth of Seahawks.com says Seahawks GM John Schneider is looking for bigger linemen this year with the addition of offensive line coach Tom Cable.

Danny O’Neil of the Seattle Times reports that Washington quarterback Jake Locker relishes the opportunity to show what he can do.

Doug Farrar of Sportspressnw.com offers this video of Schneider talking about how his experience of working at Green Bay and the Packers focus on building teams through the draft is being used in Seattle.

Pat Kirwan of the NFL Network offers 10 things to watch for at the combine this week.

Don Banks of Sports Illustrated offers a pretty good run down of the first two days of the scouting combine, including thoughts on Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert, and how Auburn quarterback Cam Newton’s comments on being an entertainer and an icon are being received here in Indianapolis.

Clark Judge of CBS Sports says Washington quarterback Jake Locker has a lot to prove this week to jump back into the first round.

ESPN’s John Clayton says Alabama running back Mark Ingram came in at 215 pounds because he wanted to show his improved speed.

That hire was rumored for weeks. Glad it’s now official.

Finally, NFL Network with a full day of drills. The O line is being run through ‘em right now. Hudson, Carimi and Carpenter all have looked smooth and quick in everything they’ve shown so far, for what that’s worth.

  2. Loved Hudson, Carimi’s footwork has looked a little slow at times, but he’s a big guy so maybe it’s natural.

NFL.com is really screwing us non-American’s over, can’t watch the combine on that page because I’m from Europe, luckily Yahoo streams the NFL Network signal, so I’m able to watch it after all, but man I was pissed, been looking forward to it for a few weeks.

  3. Duke –
I hadn’t heard the Carl Smith to SEA rumors. . .are they also talking about Leinart?

  4. Dukeshire says:

Carimi’s 10 yard split in the 40 was the 10th fastest this morning. So perhaps it’s a matter of technique (although I haven’t noticed slow feet. Granted, I’m not Mike Mayock though…) I’m a fan of both Wisconsin guys, he and Moffett.

Tyron Smith (USC) was really impressive yesterday during the bench. 36″ long arms and put up 29 reps. Not often you see a guy with arms that long able to push it up that often. (Not that it has anything to do with how good a lineman he can be. But still…) Of course, he dropped out this morning and won’t participate in any other drills. Who knows what’s going on there?

JacDG – At least you found the link somewhere. That’s really weird NFL.com isn’t streaming overseas.

  5. Dukeshire says:

klm008 – God, I hope not. The only place I’ve heard that is from fans whenever Smith’s name popped up.

  6. Dukeshire says:

BobbyK – Did you just hear Charles Davis compare Moffett to Ryan Kalil? Pretty high praise…

  7. TheBigDawgIII says:

I’m surprised we couldn’t have found someone older than 62 to be our QB coach (not to mention someone who never played QB before). Is it 1 April?

  8. bigmike04 says:

Carl Smith look like Dustin Hoffman… Or is just me as he look like a famous celeb

  9. Dukeshire says:

He looks more like Rand Paul, to me. (Hopefully he’s quite a bit smarter…)

  10. Eric, do you see this hire as having any impact on re-signing Matt in either direction?
