Hawks 9th in NFL sudden change situations

I posted this chart a couple weeks ago, and I will continue to update it throughout the season. The Seahawks were 14th the first time I looked at sudden change situations, which measures how much teams take advantage of turnover situations during a game.

Seattle moved up five spots to No. 9 on the list this week. The Seahawks have forced 13 turnovers, scoring 30 points off of those turnovers. But they also have turned it over 10 times, giving up 13 points in those situations, which shows how well the defense played in limiting points when defending the short field.

One of the reasons for Seattle’s two-game win streak is they are doing much better as an offense in taking care of the ball, with only one turnover in the last, two games.

Kansas City leads the league in sudden change situations, with 48 points scored off of turnovers and giving up zero points once they turn the ball over. So it’s no surprise the Chiefs are 4-2 and leading the AFC West.

Oakland is actually a spot of ahead of Seattle at 8th overall, giving up 24 points off turnovers but scoring 44 points off turnovers forced.

Teams in the top 10 have a combined 45-20 record, so I believe this stat is a good indicator for winning ball clubs.

KC still hasn’t given up any points off turnovers, impressive.

  2. 5-2 here we come
mcfadden likes to fumble from back in arkans to now

  3. How a team does in “Sudden Change Situations” should be determined by their effectiveness in generating points on offense or preventing points on defense PER sudden change situation.

The methodology in the table above rewards teams who receive a ton of turnovers like Seattle but do little with them. I’d like to see it organized by how well they convert on offense or minimize the damage on defense.

  4. Dukeshire says:

Well, conversely, Kansas City has forced fewer turnovers then every team except Jax and Miami yet they lead the category.

Granted, it doesn’t break down the possession immediately following a turnover, one by one. But it does provide a good metric for witch teams take advantage of their opportunities.

  5. Carlsonkid says:

They need to start scoring TD’s instead of field goals after a turnover , it was frustrating last week watching them kick all those 3-pointers when they had 5 turnovers in their favor . The Cardinals game should’ve been a much bigger blowout .

Still , it is nice to know that Mare is there when called upon ; I have absolute faith in the guy . I sat in the stadium last week and watched them back him up multiple times and he just kept bangin’ them through like it was nothing . That’s a nice weapon to have in your arsenal !

  6. Stanford @ UW 41-0? What happened?

  7. Dukeshire says:

… And Locker with another awful game. This Oregon / USC game is a fun shootout though.

  8. variable575 says:

Watched seahawks all access and they displayed a matt hasselbeck tweet stating he thought throwbacks would be really cool this weekend.

    Wonder if it means anything.

Eric, have you heard anything about throwbacks this Sunday?

  9. GriffinNW says:

The Seahawks twitter posted something that went something like “Hoping the Seahawks wear throwback jerseys? They wont be and here’s why…”
A link was posted that broke it down, saying that a team has to apply to have different jerseys, and that application has to be put in 18 months in advance, and that they won’t even have throwback jerseys next year because of the 18month thing.
That bummed me out to find out we won’t see them. I really wish Seahawks FO would send in to get the okay for the throwbacks.
I’ll go back and look for the link, and I will post if I find it.

Here is the page they linked in the twitter post-

And if you wanted, the twitter post itself-

  11. Dukeshire says:

Var – I saw him mention that as well. It’s too bad.

Nice find Griffin. I guess we won’t see them until 2012 at the earliest.

  12. Waiting until 4pm to watch Seahawks games on the east coast is very lame.
