Hasselbeck: Hawks not caught up in making statement

Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck was asked if his team sees this upcoming game against Arizona as a chance to make a statement versus a team that has beat them four straight times, not to mention defensive tackle Darnell Dockett put his elbow on the Seattle quarterback’s throat down in Arizona last week.

A wise Hasselbeck refused to take the bait.

“I think the bigger thing for us is our goal really is to win the division,” Hasselbeck said. “I’m sure that’s their goal. For a long time we owned this division, and people were gunning for us.

“I know the first time they beat us down there it was a huge deal to them. And once they did that they just kept rolling and went to the Super Bowl. They won the division again last year. The same thing for the Rams. The Rams beat us at home. That was a huge deal for them. You could tell it was a point of emphasis. And we were there once, trying to beat the Niners, or trying to beat the Rams. And so I just think that’s part of the division rivalry.”

Hasselbeck also talked about his cameo on South Park last night. Hasselbeck said he didn’t know he was going to be on, but his phone started ringing off the hook right after the show aired last night.

“That’s all I’ve been hearing about today,” he said. “People have outed themselves. People that I thought were real professional you know – marketing people, finance people, accounting. And some media people – it’s kind of surprised me.

“It was an honor to be on the show. Anytime a Seahawks is on a national show, it’s an honor. … Maybe “The Simpsons” will call next. That would be huge.”

Hasselbeck also talked about the Seahawks developing an offensive identity and being molded in the way head coach Pete Carroll wants his offense to be run.

“I know this team is being shaped the way Pete wants us to be shaped, which means he wants the offensive line unified and aggressive,” Hasselbeck said. “He’s got the guys in the spots he wants. He’s got Marshawn, which he’s been very vocal about in terms the type of runner he wants. He’s got Justin in some of our one-back and third down stuff. Guys like Mike Williams making plays and Brandon Stokley making plays. I think the pieces are coming together and no doubt, the offensive line is leading that.”

Defensive tackle Colin Cole said the team will take the same approach in dealing with Arizona running backs Beanie Wells and Tim Hightower. Cole understands that the Cardinals want to run the ball to help protect rookie quarterback Max Hall, and that the Cardinals have a talented, experienced line up front. And with the way Seattle has been playing run defense so far this season, the matchup will be strength vs. strength.

“Beanie Wells is obviously a big guy, a strong guy,” Cole said. “I’ve watched film on him, and he’s hurdles guys like no other, like he’s running track or something. He’s got a lot of ability. He can lower his shoulder. He gets a stiff arm in there, a big, strong guy.

“Hightower is a veteran guy who makes a lot of plays, breaks a lot of big runs also. So they have a two-headed monster out there that all starts with the offensive line. If we can control that a little bit, then maybe we can hope to come out with a win this week.”

Regarding safety, Hasselbeck said the league sent them a film to review regarding the enhanced punishment for illegal hits, which you can check out here. The Earl Bennett hit laid on Seattle punter Jon Ryan is used as an example of a legal it.

Eric, I asked in a previous thread but you didn’t see it I’m assuming.

How do I access the mobile version of the website? I would like to try it out.

  2. Yeah, don’t get caught up in making the statement, just make it. I hope the Cards get humilulated Saturday. GO HAWKS

  3. Ian Swenson says:

    TNT web guy here.

To get to the mobile version of this blog, just point your mobile web browser to:

  4. I think there’s a chance they can keep it close but I don’t think there’s much of a chance they are going to win. Stranger things have happened but I’m drinkin’ the kool aid this weekend.

  5. Ian – Regarding the mobile site – is there anyway to get the post time on the user comments along with the date? I often use the post time to figure out where to start reading the comments.

  6. azhawkman says:

I as well am drinking the BLUE KOOL-AID! The Tards are gonna get throttled (again) on Sunday. 5+ sacks on Hall, pressure constantly from every angle. Our defense should pick up multiple turnovers. I see the Beauty and the Beast Mode duo keeping the chains moving, even on first and second down. That Cards team has been giving up chunks of yardage vs. the run. It would make it a blowout if Hass keeps his jersey clean and avoids throwing picks, BMW could have another big day. At least, that is the KOOL-AID I am drinking and its niiiiiiiiiiiice!

  7. bird_spit says:

Ian-congrates on mobile site, I like it

  8. Eric – Whenever I post a comment that contains a link, the comment totally disappears again. This happened a week or two ago and a TNT guy fixed it before. Could you ask him to fix it again, please?

  9. Dukeshire says:

I wouldn’t expect anything less from Hass. He knows how to handle himself in front of the media, but this is a statement game. The Cards know it, the ‘Hawks know it. Should be a lot of fun.

“People have outed themselves” That’s pretty funny.

  10. SandpointHawk says:

    Cali—–Where is the photo?

  11. GriffinNW says:

Ian Swenson – I would like to view the mobile version, but on a PC. Is this possible to do?

  12. I know its OT but I just missed a chance to meet bobby engram near my house. I live in a town called harrison city pa, and he went to a restaurant my ex girlfriend works at, and she text me and told me. Well he told her to tell me to come down, but I chickened out. He autographed a pumpkin for me though!

  13. Ewalters7354 says:

Colin Cole is right. We have to focus on stopping the run game first and things will fall into place.I don’t think AZ wants a rookie to do anything more than manage the game and I honestly don’t think them managing the game will beat us.I really want to see BMW kill DRC.He is a pain in the a$$.

  14. orbeavhawk says:

ZONA is in for a very unpleasant surprise! They have never seen our Hawks in BEAST MODE…………….but they are about to see us BEASTLY!

  15. I attended the game last season in AZ where Docket planted his elbow into Matt’s throat. Hadn’t any knowledge of the incident game time and believe the team was unaware as well. Did the act merit retaliation? I have my doubts that PC will call for it. Only Spencer and Locklear remain on the o’line. And getting to a DT presents a problem. A cut back block likely wouldn’t be successful. Hawks could spend the entire game getting even only to become a laughing stock. But if an attempt were to be made I would suggest Force be lined up outside allowing Docket a free rush and having the Big Man decapitate his knees. Last week Justin put Peppers – down!

KLM – try deleting your files and never post more than one link per comment.

  16. princeaden says:

I’ve withheld comment from the day Pete Carrol was hired until now. I will say that this is the most exciting time in quite a while for the Seahawks. The PC/JS two headed monster is Damned impressive. And for the Love of Pete, I hope Dockett’s Season ends this coming Sunday. Typically, I don’t wish bad things on Players but, this is special. Can’t wait.

  17. Dukeshire says:

princeaden just tapped the “I’m In” sign.

Beyond Dockett’s elbow, he was bumping his gums after the game at Qwest, saying he could see in Hasselbeck’s eyes he was afraid and didn’t want any part of him or the ‘Cards D, etc… Dockett’s a hell of a player, but he’s a punk and has one coming to him. I can’t wait for them to run right over his dumb ass Sunday.

  18. Ian Swenson says:

@GriffinNW – Yes, just add ‘?mobile’ (no quotes) to the end of the blog’s URL to get the mobile version. Add ‘?nomobile’ to change it back.

    @pabuwal – That’s a good idea, I’ll try to change it if I can.

    @bird_spit – Thanks!

@klm008 – Got it for you.

  19. BobbyAyala says:

Matt can’t make a statement, but I can.

We’re going to kick the ever-loving crap out of Arizona.

    Statement made.

  20. At the risk of hijacking a good thread, I ran into this on NFP and had to laugh. Just reiterates why I am SO happy that TJH is gone.

  21. Absolutly LOVE the mobile version. Thanks TNT. I too am looking forward to a Hawks win. Going to have to go to the bar for this one since I live in Iowa and the only games we get to watch is every *gaging* Vikings game. Along with the Packers and Bears.

  22. Soggybuc says:

Hope the 12th man goes nuts when Beast comes out the tunnel. Bills have a great fan base and i by no means am trying to dis them but i’m sure ML has never played in an enviroment like Qwest. fuel the Beast guys and good things are going to happen.

  23. Ewalters7354 says:

Does anyone notice how little Josh Wilson,TJ,LoJack, and Tapp are playing on their current teams? These were our starters and they can’t seem to fit what their teams want to do.Show you how much talent we had prior to Carrol and JS coming in.

  24. GriffinNW says:

Thanks Ian. I too like the mobile version alot. I will probably use it on my PC too.
I so badly wish I could be at the game this Sunday. It’s going to be electric! We’re in a position to take 1st in the division.
I don’t think it’ll be hard to get Lynch jacked up for the game! I hope he loves it, I know he’s going to feed off it.
defense needs to come out fired up and shut down their run game, enabling our boys to attack their rookie QB. If we shut the run down early, it’s gonna be real bad for them.

  25. BobbyAyala says:

    Great point, E.

Kind of makes you feel bad for Jim Mora.

Never a good feeling to be set up to fail.

Then again, Jimmy’s doing well for himself, and, thanks to that regime’s failure, we now have a situation that will take this team back to the promised land.

Let’s just hope it isn’t Detroit this time around.

  26. “Dockett’s a hell of a player, but he’s a punk and has one coming to him. I can’t wait for them to run right over his dumb ass Sunday.”

Ya got that right, Dukeshire. 67,000 of us will be shouting down that punk dockett on Sunday. I want to see Russell Okung show his nasty side and plant that punk in the turf.

  27. Ewalters7354 says:

I too wish I can be at the game.I have never been to Quest Field, but, its a dream that will soon come true.I will be presenrt when the Hawks come down to New Orleans and play the Saints.I wanna move to Seattle real bad though. That is my dream state.

  28. CaliSeahawker says:

Man there are so many douche bags posting comments on Mike Sando’s wall on Facebook. I am getting into it with some guy who thinks we as Seahawks fans have the ceiling at 10 wins and the floor at 6 wins (something I posted). 6 wins is an adequate floor right guys? I mean, I can see us winning three more at the least, and 7 more if damn lucky.

Anywho, all I know is this guy is pissing me off :-)
