The posters who are praising the defensive line seem on solid ground. I thought Cole had one of his best games, and the entire group is playing with confidence and aggressiveness. I believe Red Bryant has not only added beef, but also some real attitude to that defensive front. Remember, his sushi-buddy Mebane is the guy who barks like a dog when the other team comes to the line. Red’s a guy who will not get pushed around. And he also pressures the quarterback even if it’s just a matter of his bull rush helping to collapse the pocket.
MauMau, the points on Curry reflected what I saw, too. I think we’re all so concerned about him getting to the passer, we’re liable to miss some of the things he’s doing against the run. As I looked back over my notes of the game, I charted one play when Earl Thomas came up and made a nice run tackle … but it was a function of Curry standing up his blocker and stringing the play out to the sideline where Thomas could make the play.
I think you’ve probably got a good perspective on the Golden Tate situation, freedom_X. There definitely are some numbers issues involved, and in this case it had something to do with five backs being active, as Michael Robinson has become a factor in the backfield and on special teams. However, with some of the very athletic plays Tate had made during some minicamps and training camp, it certainly seemed as if he would be one of the young guys counted on. A month ago I never would have imagined he’d be inactive. As you say, let’s remember it’s only the first game. Maybe it’s numbers. Maybe they’re trying to get inside his head a little, too.
Dukeshire … the play that Jennings made on the open-field tackle of Frank Gore was very impressive. I have to believe the Niners had that mismatch specifically in mind for that play. And Jennings answered the challenge by doing something that the Seahawks hadn’t done much in recent seasons — bring down Gore with one guy.

When I was at training camp, I saw a lot of loose play by Golden Tate. Most of the media reports talked about Golden getting deep and making spectacular plays. He is a great athlete so he can do those things, but he is a little weak in the fundamentals. I remember one play where Tate was faking an end around. He was so out of position coming around for the fake he almost knocked Whitehurst to the ground. I could not hear what was said, but it looked like Whitehurst gave Tate a ‘C’mon man’. Golden Tate will be fine, he just needs a little work.

I was impressed with the Hawks STs coverage, for so little time together. SF’s Ginn was corralled all nite.

Understood, but still a little strange to me – in that he was a starter for a bigtime college program that runs a pro-type passing offense. Any way you slice it, it’s disappointing that our 2nd round pick is inactive. I figured he’d at least be returning punts and kicks for us. But right now, after a win like that, it’s a footnote.
Worth noting again that Matt H. completed 18 of 23 (and that was with two drops by Williams), and he was 16 for his last 19, for 160+ yds and 2 TDS, against a very solid defense. Good stuff.

Can we get an update on the players trying out for the hawks this week. I’ve heard rumors from Chicago Bears C/G Josh Beekman to Local Product (D2 college standout) Aaron Boyce
Beekman makes sense but Aaron Boyce is a 6’3 203 WR. Is there something telling about our comfortability at wideout? Or is this a move to improve special teams
I love how this organization is never satisfied.

Eric,
The O-Line was very disappointing to me with spencer & locklear getting no push on run plays. I watched the game and I know SF is really good on D but lock & spencer days should be numbered as starters on the Line. I would like to see Andrews get a shot at RT and unger a chance at Center when he is healthy again. That was my only real concern from week 1. I think this team will get better on defense, they just need time to gel and play together.

The difference of strength between Spencer and Unger is not even comparable.
In the department of “Push” – Spencer is by far our best center.

Eric,
It seems like we’ve had alot of O-line injuries in the past couple years. Does this have anything to do with the zone blocking scheme?

i think one issue with tate is that he did not seem to have mastered the required routes, so while he could and did make spectacular plays he was also often out of position. hass seemed perturbed about that.

btw i think the communication between smith and crabtree showed the same problem

Dave…. Thx for addressing the Golden Tate issue, even though my tag isn’t ‘Duke’ or ‘BobbyK’….
.
Just seems like a total shutdown of a bright light…. It bothers me that ‘a college graduate’ just can’t seem to get his routes right … and it should be the only thing he’s concentrating on…. hmmmmm…
The whole situation just begs for additional info, but apparently it won’t be available anytime soon…. I’m letting it go….
