Report: Four teams interested in Housh

Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer is reporting that according to a league source, four teams, the Minnesota Vikings, the Arizona Cardinals, the New York Jets and the San Diego Chargers have made trade offers for Seattle Seahawks receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

However, Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports the Vikings are not interested.

You know Houshmandzadeh would love to go to Arizona and play against Pete Carroll twice a season, but I would be surprised if Seattle is willing to deal him within the division.

Of those teams, the Jets might make the most sense. They are trying to reach the Super Bowl after finishing a game away from the big game last year. And taking a look at their roster, they could use receiver help.

Santonio Holmes will begin the season on the suspended list and miss the first four games of the year. And the cupboard is pretty bare after Jerricho Cotchery and Braylon Edwards, so Housh could provide a reliable target for young quarterback Mark Sanchez until Holmes returns.

    Ooh, dueling league sources!

  2. There have been some reports about the Jets and financial problems (part of the reason Revis isn’t the next John D. Rockefeller) so I don’t know if they would want that extra $7 million on their payroll.

  3. snydro22 says:

Joe Reedy is a hack. Read his twitter account.

He tried telling me he broke the Housh trade/release story today at 1 pm. That ESPN didn’t pick it up until 6 hours later.

    Laughable.

  4. Dukeshire says:

I would imagine that part of any trade would involve how much of Housh’s salary the Seahawks would pick up.

By the way, that’s just what Sanchez needs; a veteran receiver berating him for not “being on the same page”.

  5. Dukeshire says:

Even Rotoworld questions Reedy (not the information) if you read the link Bobby provided in the previous thread.

  6. I believe it’s “laughable” too. For me, it’s more wishful thinking. I’d like to get something of value for someone who I don’t believe is valuable. Don’t get me wrong, I know Housh is one of our top 52-53 players, but I don’t see him as one of our more vaulable players (all things considered). As I’ve said, sometimes addition is by subtraction.

  7. Being surrounded by BS Viking reports… I still do not get the sense the Vikings are at all interested in TJ either…

  8. freedom_X says:

They’ll deal Houshmanzadeh within the division, if they’ve got no other takers. Just like when they dealt Darrell Jackson. If they cut Houshmanzadeh, AZ might be able to claim him anyway, so why not get a pick or player from them.

I hope there’s a taker somewhere. A point came up that I read elsewhere – if TJ has a bad attitude, Carroll doesn’t want it rubbing off on the rest of the team (such as the young receivers.)

In that respect, Branch is much more valuable to Seattle/Carroll, for despite the anti-Branch sentiment of recent years, in reality no one has uncovered any stories or rumors of Branch being a bad teammate, self-centered, or a finger-pointer/rampant egotist. He’s always had a reputation of being a good guy, and I *really* can’t blame him for firing back at Hugh Millen last year, ill-conceived though it was. Branch is not a bad role model for the young WR’s to follow (other than not staying healthy.)

  9. The Seahawks would be crazy not to pick up the entire salary minus the vet minimum to receive a 5th or 6th round draft pick in return. If they cut him, most likely they will be on the hook for that same amount, so they might as well get a draft pick for it.

I have no problem adding Choice. For me, it would make the Wilson trade easier to swallow if we could add Choice for a late round pick.

  11. pabs – I agree 100% but snydro said on the previous link that the ‘Hawks can’t do that.

  12. snydro22 says:

Everyone should read my tweets back and forth with Joe Reedy and Curtis Crabtree of KJR.

    Kind of humorous.

    @snydro81

  13. snydro22 says:

NFL rules prohibit the Hawks from picking up any or all of his 2010 salary.

    Otherwise it’s a no-brainer.

  14. snydro — when is Bismark, ND going to become a reality?

  15. snydro22 says:

    Hopefully sooner than later.

For me, sooner. For the rest of the family, it’s looking like later.

Hoping to get everyone moved back there before snow starts blowing. We really need our buyers here to secure their financing or we’ll have to re-list. That means more showings, and that we missed out on the best time of the year to sell, the last two months..

Advice for anyone reading this who is thinking about selling: It’s a buyers market. Banks aren’t lending. Appraisals are like pulling teeth. Don’t do it unless you can stomach the loss and have a ton of patience.

  16. SUCKS!!! We’ve had our house (in bumb-F-Egypt) on the market for OVER a year and it’s NOT fun!!! I’m coming to the ‘Hawks game on Sunday vs. SF but other than that (big THAT) it’s going to be tight. Again, SUCKS (especially paying for a heating bill in MN in the middle of winter on an empty house). Oh well, better than loved ones with health problems or something more important…

  17. snydro22 says:

That does suck! But you are right about other things being more important. And paying for heat in the winter is better than a burst pipe or two I suppose.

When I read your comments I give them a Minnesota accent in my head and it makes me laugh. My wife’s actually been giving me a hard time because I spent a few weeks back there in the beginning of summer with family and then I have been dealing with our agent/broker back there and I’m starting to develop the same accent. It was thick when I was a kid. I’m embracing it.

It’s weird – people who move to New England start dropping their R’s, people who move to the south start saying Ya’ll and people who move to the midwest start saying oot instead of out – but no one ever moves here and starts speaking normal!

  18. Since the Hawks are on the hook for Housh’s salalry no matter what, does he have to be traded or cut by today? Does it matter how long he stays on the roster while they try to work out a trade? Just curious…

  19. Get ready for plenty of “oh, sure… you betcha…” You knOOOW? lol

  20. Man, if you had told me a month ago that we’d be getting rid of Housh and keeping Branch for yet another season, I’d have called you crazy.

  21. Dukeshire says:

bilko – He doesn’t have to be, but since they do have to be down to 53 today, they will dump him or trade him today. SInce there are not moving forward with him, no need to have him taking up a roster spot while they try to work out a deal.

  22. Housing reality check, pricing is easy. Go back on a comp value in 2006-7 and subtract between 25-30 %. Thats your likely selling price depending on the market your in.

    eg.

    2007 comp (sold) $200k
    2010 offer $150k

Why? Foreclosure prices are setting the valuations and loan amounts. How? Banks are holding inventory and releasing only as fast as they have to to so the PMI (first 20% of the mortgage) takes the hit not the banks so much and the PMI industry can stay in business.

If you can take the hit sell, if not reconsider other alternatives for the next ten years.

    JMHO

  23. I hope we get something for Housh.

  24. SteelBlueLime says:

I thought that somewhere I read the Seahawks have to “make-up” the difference in salary with Housh and not another NFL team. Which means the Seahawks would not be “enticing” one team over another. The contract language was such that the Seahawks were liable for all 15-million over the first two years – paid to Housh. I think there is/was a slight exception to what Syndro was referring to regarding cash as part of the trade.

  25. Should be an interesting day!

  26. Audible says:

    Is the deadline noon, EST?

Also…we’re free to snag rejects from other teams as long as we release a player prior to signing the new one?

  27. SnakeDoctor says:

I would think it would be a no brainer for the Seahawks to ONLY trade Housh.
If they cut him – HE can go to any team and get a contract at HIS liking. We still have to pay him the 7 mil right?
If we trade him – WE get to choose where he goes and we MIGHT get a draft pick in return. We might pay some or all of the 7 mil. This just seems like a no brainer from the Seahawks.
Where am I going wrong here?

  28. Dukeshire says:

Teams aren’t likely to take the $7 mil + whatever else remains. They only real motivation for a team would be if they wanted him badly enough and didn’t think they could pick him up on waivers.

  29. chuck_easton says:

    SnakeDoctor,

Housh gets 7 million no matter what.

    BUT

Say Seattle cuts him and a new team signs him and pays him one million THIS season. The wording in Seattle’s contract is that he gets 7 million TOTAL so Seattle would have to make up the difference and pay him 6 million.

If a team trades for Housh they are agreeing to take on the entire 7 million.

That is why it’s likely any team interested will wait for Housh to be released and then try to sign him.

The good news for Seattle is if there really are a couple of teams interested in Housh if he’s cut then they might just have to get into a bidding war for his services. The more the new team has to pay to win the bidding war the less Seattle owes him.

This is why it still might work out for Seattle to cut him if a trade can’t be reached.

  30. Could’nt they trade TJ and cash for xyz?
