The Seattle Seahawks missed him on the waiver wire, but made a deal to bring offensive tackle Tyler Polumbus into the fold. (Hat tip to Brian McIntyre of Scout.com).
According to a report from the Detroit Free Press, the Seahawks traded for Polumbus but it is unknown what the Seahawks gave up in return.
Polumbus was recently released by the Denver Broncos, where he played for offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates in 2008.
The Seahawks tried to claim Polumbus off waivers, but the Lions were higher on the list because of a worse record in 2009.
At 6-8, 320 pounds, Polumbus is a big body who gives Seattle more depth at offensive tackle, where injuries to Russell Okung (ankle) and Ray Willis (knee) have thinned the position.
And this is why I follow Brian McIntyre. He actually predicted this move last week.
Great move, great fit. This helps us a ton. We suddenly have a little depth.
Not the prototypical height for a Gibbs tackle, but fits every other characteristic perfectly and has great zone blocking experience.

Great move! Given the sub-par play of Locklear I wouldn’t be suprised if Polumbus ends up being the starting RT by week 1.

Yes, it would seem to be a very good fit. I think this has as much to do with Lock’s poor play as much as injuries.

The officially unofficial player roster at Seahawks.com only has 75 names on it so I think they somehow got down to the 75 limit before Polumbus came on the scene.
But then the officially unofficial Depth chart on the teams official site still has Lawrance Jacskon as one of our DE’s so go figure.

If he can fit in and run the ZBS then good pickup. Kind of a curveball reading the tweets about him not being too great though with his past team.
Off topic- What is going on with K. Balmer? Has he done anything or played since we acquired him? Haven’t heard his name really, haven’t caught any stats or nothing. Is he hurt?

Looks like just a temporary insurance policy just in case Okung and Pitts and Willis are all healing slowly a week from now.
Hopefully PoJumbo gets cut in a week, because hopefully Okung will be healthy by the opener, and hopefully Pitts and Willis will be healthy soon thereafter. Yeah, lots of hopefully. But I don’t want more crap O linemen. We have some quality guys healing right now.

griffincsb: as chuck says, Balmer got an ankle contusion in his first preseason game. They though it was a sprain, but its just a bad bruise.
Watching his first series on tape, the guy looked good. He came in at undertackle in the second half, and on his first play he pushed the pocket and rushed the QB. His second play he make the tackle on the RB. A couple more plays and he got hurt. He has a history as an under-performer, but he looked motivated and looked like he could help.

Polumbus is not a nothing. He did well for Denver running the ZBS in 2008, while Bates was there. He is someone who can legitimately come in and push our current linemen for playing time.
If you look at who put in claims on him, the Texans and the Seahawks both did, behind Detroit obviously. Detroit knew he would be coveted by the ZBS teams, which he was.
To say you don’t want him, and to call him a nothing, is just uninformed and short-sighted.

Some players simply don’t fit in certain schemes. If one can block in the ZBS and not in the “power scheme” then I don’t care (as long as we’re ZBSers). This move certainly can’t hurt and with the way Lock has “performed” this is a good thing.
Lock is probably my biggest surprise of the pre-season. I thought he’d return to being good back at RT. Now, I’d argue that he’s on a very short list of our worst starters (but getting paid big money).

I could not agree with that more. I have a feeling Unger’s play is effected by Lock’s inefficiency. I expected the right side of the line to much better than it is.. Lock’s pass pro has always been questionable, but this year it is truly bad. Here’s hoping the new kid wins that position.
Next year, I hope we draft LG, DE and RT (1,2,4).

I have been bothered by Unger spending too much time in his own backfield though. He’s had some great looking plays in space, but when it comes time to man up, Unger has been getting pushed back more than he’s won those battles. There is reason for concern with him too. I expected more in this second season (up to this point — I still think he’ll be fine in the long run).

I’m going to agree with you here. At the start of OTA’s everyone was sure Unger was going to be the starting center. When it didn’t happen we were all scratching our heads and doing the collective ‘huh???’.
When Pitts was signed, again the talk was this would free Unger up to move to center. Didn’t happen. Instead the team moved Hamilton over to be the backup center.
Maybe the powers that be have seen something (or better yet HAVEN’T seen something) in Unger that makes them believe he’s not ready for prime time? They see these guys every day. We just read the hype and buy into things.
I wouldn’t at all be suprised if/when Pitts is fully healthy he doesn’t take the RG spot away from Unger. I’ll put it out here now so when it happens I can do the ‘told ya so’ dance.

There were many scouts prior to the draft who didn’t think Unger would be an impact guard/center in the NFL.
I think Seahawks fans, as a whole, are often guilty of associating draft slot with potential, which just didn’t work under the old regime.. Unger will most likely be an average starter for a few years before injuries or superior talent push him out of the role. He just doesn’t have upside. Kind of like the rest of our team.
