If you’re looking for an example on the closed-lipped society that is the Seattle Seahawks offensive line, check out the video above.
We asked to talk to the team’s latest addition, offensive tackle Tyler Polumbus and he obliged, not fully understanding that Alex Gibbs is this team’s offensive line coach, and the motto in Seahawks’ land as far as offensive linemen go is less is more in terms of talking to reporters.
Offensive guard Ben Hamilton reminded Polumbus of this as he left the field. And then rookie Russell Okung took matters into his own hands, playfully tugging Polumbus toward the locker room midway through our interview.
Polumbus was allowed to come back and finish his talk with reporters minutes later. But he obviously had been well schooled, and did not have much to say.
“I’ve been in three cities in one week,” Polumbus said. “I’m obviously disappointed in getting let go by Denver. But I’m glad to be here.”
Polumbus worked with the second and third units at left tackle. He looked okay during pass protection drills, but played a little high on the zone plays, which is expected for a guy 6-foot-8.
Polumbus said the fact that he played in a zone scheme at Denver should help. Polumbus doesn’t know if he’ll play on Thursday, but said he’ll try to get ready as fast as he can.
Polumbus was an eight-game starter for Denver last season at right tackle.
To make room for Polumbus, the Seahawks placed cornerback Josh Pinkard on the non-football injury reserve list.
Chester Pitts practiced today, but did not get any live team reps or work during pass protection drills, so they still taking it slow in terms of his return to the field.
The starting offensive line for the first unit remains Mansfield Wrotto at left tackle, Mike Gibson at left guard, Chris Spencer at center, Max Unger at right guard and Sean Locklear at right tackle.
As far as injuries, Anthony McCoy (ankle), Josh Pinkard (knee), Nick Reed (knee), Russell Okung (ankle), Leroy Hill (knee), David Hawthorne (hip), Ray Willis (knee), Chris Baker (hamstring) and Aaron Curry (elbow).
Willis was not in attendance at practice.
Speak softly and carry a big stick. Oh and keep Matt off his backside until Big Russ returns.

The best part of the video was seeing Okung walking without a limp…

So what’s the reason for the gag order on offensive lineman?

Okung isn’t injured as bad as they say. They just didn’t want him on the field. They know what they have, what it’s worth, and the stupidity of letting him play in the preseason and putting all that in jeopardy.

Love it even had the rookie pull him away from the interview.
After that I don’t expect to hear much of anything from any of the OLinemen this season.

@nighthawk2
Not sure when it started with Alex Gibbs, but it is a tradition of how he wants his linemen to interact with the media, No talking. I vaguely remember this going back to his time with the Broncos.
