The Seahawks confirmed claiming Kevin Ellison off waivers. The safety had been cut by San Diego after having been arrested for possession of a controlled substance (vicodin). Ellison started nine games for the Chargers as a rookie. He played for coach Pete Carroll at USC. The Hawks’ first-unit safeties Tuesday were Lawyer Milloy and rookie Earl Thomas, with Kam Chancellor and Jamar Adams on the second unit. Veteran Jordan Babineaux was nowhere in sight. Didn’t ask Carroll about him specifically after practice, but I’ll try to follow up.

  1. Might potentially be a great pickup, if Coach Carrol can get him under “control”- If he pans out, we will have some great young safety’s, who could be a force for years to come.

  2. Very interesting about Babs being nowhere in sight (unless he joined Forsett on his Honeymoon).

  3. Dukeshire says:

Aside from Thomas, they all seem to play SS though. We’ll see how it works out. Competition and a long ways to go.

  4. Dukeshire says:

Scratch that, Adams at free? I can only imagine that was due to Babs’ absence. (He can’t be too thrilled about all this activity at safety.)

  5. Vicodin is a controlled substance, but sure is prescribed often for pain… Makes one wonder if more was involved with San Diego, but I’m guessing more will come out on this given some time…. motive appears the significant aspect…….

For Ellison to get arrested for having Vicodin he must of not had a prescription from a doctor for it. It still seems crazy to be cut just because of that, must be more to the story. If I played pro football and had to edure the physical abuse they do I would pop Vicodin like candy doctor or no doctor.

  7. ruminator1 says:

some folks in san diego felt that Ellison was great in run support, but lacked speed and was something of a liability in coverage,

Babs is at the broadcaster boot camp. I heard him on the NFL radio network on Sirius earlier today. Excited to see Red Bryant coming off of the edge, certainly will be something most teams are not used to seeing. Cannot wait to see this defense in action and how Hass will handle the offense if he can get a little time with the likes of Carlson, Butler, Tate, Branch, and Housh it could be very interesting especially if the run game can keep defenses honest.

  9. It’d be interesting to hear if McCloughan had input on K.Ellison acquisition, or if he’s goten to the VMAC yet. An interesting review of Scot McCloughan’s picks for the 9ers: http://blogs.sacbee.com/49ers/archives/2010/06/mccloughans-pic.html

    Lotsa OL picks.
