I’m sitting here watching the Mariners and avoiding yard work, so why not talk Seahawks instead?
Bummer, I was just going to send all my questions.
Anyway, here are a few:
-How long do you think Spencer will stay at center?
-Do you think Gibson has a shot at winning a starting job? He’s got a mean streak and is a good run blocker. But he could get exposed in pass blocking late in games.
-And was there a prize for the winner of the fantasy football league? I just ask because there is a prize for the winners of the draft prediction contest. If so, I’m here to claim it.
And thanks for the answers, I don’t watch college football and living in Belgium I don’t get any coverage. So I didn’t know USC had a zone blocking scheme.

I’m unclear why everyone is so down on Deon Butler. I know his production was low last year, but rookie WRs notoriously take a year or two to get going. Also the team gave him basically one route to run. I don’t think any of us really know if that was due to his ineptitude at other routes or if it was him being misused/not given the chance by Knapp. The offense in general was putrid, and I think it would be giving up on him way too early. Obomanu or even Branch seem more likely camp casualties.

I think the Hawks start training camp with this O line: Okung, Hamilton, Spencer, Unger, Locklear. The long shot I’ll watch is Jeff Byers.

i go away for lunch and miss the chat – but I can’t think of a question I would have asked that wasn’t asked and answered. The world has sure changed from the days of picking a football preview magazine in August to know who was playing for whom the next year.
Thanks for all the effort on the blog eric – it is much appreciated, especially for an out-of-town fan like me.

devisscher,
I have a high school buddy who is a huge Hawks fan and moved to Belgium. Have you found anywhere to watch games over there? I know it’s 1 in a 1,000,000 that you’d run into another Hawks fan, but there’s more than one of you over there!

I’m watching games with my NFL.com gamepass. I haven’t run into other Hawks fans, but I know a few American football fans, and I’m busy convincing everyone to start watching.
I’m gonna start working August 9 and considering the 9 hour difference I will probably watch the Seahawks at home next year. It’s possible I won’t be able to watch live if I have to get up early.

Duke,
Can you write out a quick depth chart with regards to our defense? I’m curious why Leroy Hill isn’t being considered at the elephant position. Seems like it would allow getting the four best players on the field, with Curry and Hawthorne starting alongside Tatupu. Wouldn’t Hill be better against the run than Clemons, Reed or Dixon? Is he simply not quick enough?
This has to be the most exciting, interesting and anticipated pre-season I can ever remember for a time with little hope of making the playoffs. I am stoked.

I guess that is putting a lot on Hawthorne’s shoulders, but still.. And I’m not ready to give up on Will Herring just yet as a difference maker. I think he just needs to see the field some time. Love his toughness.
So excited to see guys like Ricky Foley in August. Sooo much competition all over the field. If we keep throwing spaghetti at the wall, some of it is sure to stick.

Boucherm, I’m with you on Butler. Really liked him before last year’s draft and was glad we got him. I think he’s going to be a star.
Oceanic, I too like Byers. Thought he’d be drafted, but sure glad we signed him. I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t end up on the 53 man roster.

thought this was interesting. from
Grading the draft by Bernie19Kosar on Apr 26, 2010 1:58 AM EDT 93 comments . After ranking 2007 drafts, they suggest that one can only really rate a draft 3 yrs later. here is whatr they say about Seahawks:
Teams that got a F
Seattle Seahawks
Hits: Zip.
Misses: Josh Wilson and traded first round pick for Deion Branch (Pick was used on Brandon Merriweather)
In the same off-season that the Patriots gave up a fourth rounder for randy Moss, the Seahawks gave away their first rounder for Deion Branch. Add in the fact that Josh Wilson couldn’t cover his shadow, and you have a recipe for the first draft that started dragging this franchise into the toilet.

ruminator,
You can stop reading right at the point they call Josh WIlson a miss. The guy was our best CB last season. He’s improved every year. If Thurmond gets healthy Wilson will be the nickleback and potential kickreturner for years to come.
The guy obviously didn’t watch a single game last year if he didn’t even notice that Wilson was our best CB and took the starting job away from Lucas.

Here’s a more realistic 2007 draft evaluation, and this one is done by Pete Prisco who has NOTHING good to say about the Seahawks (ever):
Seattle Seahawks
The Seahawks didn’t have a first-round pick, trading it away to the Patriots for Deion Branch. They did get good value for their second-round pick in corner Josh Wilson, who started 13 games last season. He’s a solid player. Third-round pick Brandon Mebane was the best pick. He’s been a starter since his rookie season at defensive tackle. The rest of the draft produced very little, although seventh-round pick Steve Vallos has eight starts on the offensive line.
Grade: C

Any depth chart is pure guess work right now. Then there’s the matter of players like Hawthorne, Terrill etc… who play multiple positions. That said, here’s my best guess heading into this weekend’s camp;
LDE – Jackson, E.J. Henderson, Rose
NT – Cole, Bryant, Granger
DT – Mebane, Terrill, Vickerson
RDE – Clemons, Reed, Davis, R. Henderson, Foley
SLB – Curry, Pawelek, Dixon
MLB – Tatupu, McCoy
WLB – Hawthorne, Hill*, Herring, Heygood
FS – Thomas, Brindley, Harris
SS – Babineaux, Milloy, Chancellor, Adams
CB** – Brown, Cox, Jennings, Lewis, Pinkard, Thurmond, Trufant, Willingham, Wilson
* Hill’s absence withstanding
** Aside from Trufant / Wilson anyone’s guess is as good as mine.

Snydro – I have wondered about Herring as “elephant”. I really like his style as well and like rooting for him. I hadn’t considered Hill there but my first thought is you’re right, he may not be quick enough. But obvious running downs…
× Flag comment
He’s been quick enough to get his hands on the quarterback whenever we’ve called upon him, so we might be selling him short.
I am going to start the Leroy Hill for Elephant campaign.
Vote for the guy who’s got a few pounds in his trunk! Vote 4 LeRoy!
That reminds me, I’ve been meaning to ask Eric if he can do us all a big favor and title a blog entry, “Golden Showered with Praise” after Tate makes a few nice grabs in rookie camp.
Another random thought for all the married guys – Nothing spices up the bedroom like your wife seeing a cute girl flirt with you. Nothing. Even if it doesn’t happen, the next time you get a haircut or go to the store, tell your wife it was just soo annoying how this college girl was trying to flirt.. It works..

Someone’s feeling feisty tonight.

I think part of the reason we’re not seeing too much of Hill on depth charts is because he wasn’t at the first camp due to his second lapse of stupidity in the last year (so others were at their LB positions) and the fact that the ‘Hawks are probably going to be without him for the first two weeks of the season (so we have to prepare for life without him for the first 1/8 of the season). But if he’s going to get paid $6 million this year (minus his docked pay) you can bet he’s going to have a significant role on this team.

Regardless of who plays the Elephant, I just hope we run a few plays like this:

Wow. I’ve never seen a play like that before! Never.

I’d be surprised if that wasn’t in Knapp’s playbook somewhere.

It might be in Knapp’s Hale Mary package with the Hawks on their own 20 and 1 second remaining in the game.

klm,
Hate to say it but if you have the Seahawks losing to TB, Carolina, and Denver you can officially hand in your fan card. Those three teams are picked to be in the bottom 5 of the league next season. Change those to wins and move the team to 7-9 and your prediction might be a little more reasonable.

klm,
What’s the deal, hater? Come on!
This is no time to be a Negative Nancy.. It’s April, the one month of the year our super bowl dreams don’t seem so crazy!
× Flag comment
Not a hater – just look like a neg nancy, I guess. Actually, was hoping for 3-13 or worse, but just couldn’t put down losing to STL in the away game. I wanna see Jake Locker in Seahawk blue, at least sitting behind a re-signed MH & CW. After next season, let’s win like crazy from then on.
We’d lost by 3 points @ CAR in ’07 when Hawks were having a pretty good year, and CAR a pretty awful year. This year, sans Delhomme, but with M.Moore, J.Clausen, T.Pike and H.Cantwell CAR just might find a QB that can lead (and not throw so many ints). With their running game CAR might have a year like NYJs did last year with a rookie QB. USC’s defense was kinda susceptible to the run – it’s not really a gimme game for Hawks.
Hawks beat TB 20-7 at home in ’07, their 1st game of reg season. Then lost at TB 20-10 in ’08, and lost to them again 24-7 at home last season. Maybe TB’s overconfident, but wouldn’t count on it. At least the weather shouldn’t be much of a problem.
Early game at Mile High, never good. If SEA wins, good, but they’ve lost more than they’ve won there.

I think we sweep the Rams, split with SF and Arizona, home wins, road losses. Beat Denver and KC, maybe Oakland but it’s tougher now that Oakland has a real quarterback. Beat TB and Atlanta, maybe Carolina. Beat Chicago. 9-7, maybe 10-6.
