New Seattle Seahawks running back Leon Washington said he was actually getting ready for a fishing trip off the coast of Long Island with former N.Y. Jets teammate tight end Chris Baker, now with Seattle, when he heard about the trade that has him now with the Seahawks.

“It’s kind of weird,” Washington said. “I was like, ‘Dude, we’re teammates now.’ So he told me I’d be very pleased about Seattle. He said everybody out there is great, and they’re a good organization looking to get back on track, and get back to a winning tradition. And I’m just happy to be a part of that.”

Washington, who signed his one-year, $1.76 million, second-round tender as a restricted free agent with the Jets a week before the draft, understood there was a chance he would be dealt this week.

“I sat down with the Jets and they told me there were no guarantees in this business,” Washington said. “They told me if the phone possibly rang it would be a possibility. I didn’t expect it, but I knew it was a possibility. So like I said before, its’ a great opportunity.”

Washington said he has not talked about getting a new contract with Seattle.

“It hasn’t been discussed yet,” he said. “Right now my focus is on just getting back healthy 100 percent, getting on the football field and contributing and trying to win football games. That’s my main focus. And when I do that, everything else off of the football field will take care of itself.”

Washington said his broken leg is healing fine and he expects to be ready for training camp.

“I’ve been running the past month of so,” he said. “It’s going great. I’m right on track. I’ve been working extremely hard ever since I got injured. Physically I feel great.”

He joins a crowded backfield in Seattle with the addition of LenDale White joining Julius Jones, Justin Forsett, Quinton Ganther and Louis Rankin.

“My main role is to come in and help this team the best I an, whether returning kicks, catching the ball or running the ball,” he said. “I’m going to over-emphasize that it is all about the team. You cannot win without being a team player.”

  1. He and LenWhale are coming in extra motivated with respect to playing for that new, fat contract that all players want and with “proving people wrong.” I like it. If there are no injury problems in camp, I expect Leon, Forsett, and White to be a very good trio this upcoming season.

  2. JJ gets cut?

  3. CHI got a good QB – is TR there yet?

  4. I like the moves the Hawks are making today. Now, the question to me is, when are we going to move or cut J. Jones and Branch?

  5. Yes, they will and in front of a much strong offensive line…I can’t believe we can say that after all these years.

  6. EyeAmBaldman says:

Motivation is huge. This will be interesting.

watch the video of the trade announcement here: http://www.nfl.com/videos/seattle-seahawks/09000d5d817c3835/Carroll-gets-Leon-too

Jets fans at the draft are not happy about the trade.

    I like it!

  8. DEN, NYG, then SEA! I’d take Selvish Capers, really.

  9. EyeAmBaldman says:

Capers has fallen big-time and not sure why. I like him. He’s a RT that could be moved to G.

  10. Good training camp battles shaping up at most positions

    QB Matt vs Charlie

    RB Washington Forsett Jones White

WR TJ, Deion, Deon, Golden, Mike, Reggie, Ruvell

O line seems set–Okung, Hamilton, Spencer, Unger, Locklear–Would love to see more competition here.

    TE set Carlson

Jackson starts at one DE. Clemons, Wilson, Reed?

Mebane on starting DT. Cole, Vickerson?

    LB set

    FS Thomas (oh, so good)

    SS Babs, Chancellor, Adams?

CB Trufant, then Wilson or Thrumond

I think Seattle has three more draft picks, 185-236-245

  11. Or play him at RT and move Lock to G?

  12. EyeAmBaldman says:

Anthony McCoy…best player available I’m guessing. Interesting pick.

  13. SoCal, finally!

  14. USC guy for Pete.

  15. USC guy for Pete, still need a Guard

  16. Dukeshire says:

I agree that injuries aside its Forsett, Washington and White. Big upgrade.

Washington is an extreemly hard runner who is going to be a great addition. Presuming the leg will be 100%, this is a great move by the ‘Hawks.

  17. The only QB battle will be Whitehurst vs Teel for the number 2 job. No way Whitehurst even touches Hasselbeck here.

  18. We have 64 TEs and limited depth at Guard.

I trust Mr. Happy with a USC pick though.

  19. EyeAmBaldman says:

McCoy had off-field concerns. Didn’t he test positive at the combine for marijuana?

  20. piperfeltcher says:

I am more surprised when a player does not test positive for marijuana. What happens in a few months when Cal. legalizes pot does the NFL stop testing players for it?

  21. Is he a blocking TE? He’s a really highly rated TE.

  22. If Mr. Happy was willing to take him, I wouldn’t be too worried about the concerns.

  23. EyeAmBaldman says:

He’s an athletic receiving TE that never lived up to his potential @ USC.

  24. Carlson, Baker, Morrah, Pociask, and now McCoy. Morrah and Pociask have got some very good competition for TC(?)

  25. Dukeshire says:

    EyeAmBaldman – Yes he did.

A bit of a head scratcher here. I presume at this point o line depth will come tomorrow with UFA signings.

  26. I’t pretty simple Leon. one cut and sprint to the endzone. once you feel that 12th man love you’ll forget all about that other place. really excited to have in Blue.

  27. chuck_easton says:

Pete’s first HUH? pick of the weekend.

Either that or Morrah better start brushing up his resume.

  28. McCoy???? This is the only question mark, IMOHO, to this point..

He’s apparently not very quick off the snap, and in the pro’s you sure need to be as everything is accelerated….

  29. seahawklovertoo says:

Unfortunately, this means Morah is out… To bad , I like that kid.

  30. Coolalvin says:

Assuming we get rid of Branch/JJ..

Do these positions look right as far as order?

    RB White/Washington/Forsett

    WE TJ/Butler/Tate/One of the Williams’s

    O- Line Okung/Hamilton/Unger or Spencer/Willis/Locklear

  31. McCoy is a highly rated TE and was projected as a 2-3 rounder. He had a 7.6 player rating by NFL.com

  32. chuck_easton says:

I’d put Tate ahead of Butler.

Also the OL, if this past OTA is any indication will be:

    Okung, Hamilton, Spencer, Unger Locklear

That is until Spencer suffers his annual injury and then I wouldn’t be suprised to see Unger move to Center and either Willis or Spencer at RG.

  33. Schneider was in a relative position with the Pack under Thompson and o-line hadn’t been a priority. But look. Ted T took LT Bulaga after seeing Rodgers scamper for his life. Schneider may have rubbed off selecting Okung. And when making comparisons just look at Greg Jennings. Both Golden Tate and Jennings are the same size but Tate has a tad bit more speed and much better RAC. Look for big things. I expect tate to be Golden and if we can get him the ball, Hass, he should have a better career than Tory Holt. Jennings is well on his way with Rodgers. .. To be honest I know nothing about Whitehurst. How does he stack up against Rodgers?.Clausen sure could unload an accurate long ball.
So far an exceptional couple of trades and draft IMO.

  34. superduk says:

I much preferred all the “I am going to reserve judgement” and the “I don’t necessarily agree with the moves the team has made in the off-season” crap to this nickname-calling cutesy junk going on now.

The Hawks’ brass has pulled in a nice haul. I hope they put them to use and actually put the best product on the field regardless of who it upsets.

    I wish camp started tomorrow.
