Hawks trade No. 139 pick to the Jets for RB Leon Washington

The Seahawks made their second trade of the day, trading the team’s No. 139 pick in the fifth round to the N.Y. Jets for the No. 236 pick in the seventh round and RB Leon Washington.

So the Seahawks give up a fifth-round pick but pick up a seventh rounder and a pretty good player in Washington.

Washington gives Seattle the speed back they were looking for. Washington only played seven games last year, breaking his leg against Oakland on Oct. 25. But if healthy, he provides another playmaker offensively for Seattle who can also contribute in the return game.

Wow. The Seahawks just upgraded the running game big time by bringing in LenDale White and now Leon Washington. So the running back position appears pretty crowded with Justin Forsett, Julius Jones, Quentin Ganther and Louis Rankin still on the roster. Are there more moves ahead? Stay tuned.

  1. johansonrs says:

    Very happy with this draft.

  2. JJ going in a trade????

  3. alseahawk says:

Wow….this is just fantastic….cannot say how happy I am right now. 236 and Washington for 139

  4. vichawkfan says:

I wanted Leon to sign as a RFA – this is best case scenario. Love his bigplay ability.
Unreal draft for us…..kudo’s big-time to PC and Schnieder!

  5. I am Mr. Happy right about now.

    Mr. Happy is Mr. Happy.

    Dukeshire is Mr. Happy.

    chuck_easton is Mr. Happy.

    BobbyA is Mr. Happy.

Heck, I think we’re all a bunch of Mr. Happy’s right about now!!!

  6. I’m not going to get gay like some of you, but yeah, this draft is lookin pretty spectacular. I wonder what Ruskell is thinkinn’ right now. Finally a season to look forward to.

  7. Pat_riot says:

See ya JJ, you were a bum anyway! rankin won’t be there either.. hopefully forsett will still be a factor in our backfield!

  8. alseahawk says:

Cam Sheffied from Troy to KC…..Go Trojans (96 Troy Grad here…..can’t be objective here)

  9. Wow, Julius Jones and Justin Forsett are both going to have to fight hard to earn a job on this team. We’re looking at a brand-new running game. I hope Washington’s leg comes back 100%.

  10. Leon Washington 5-8/195, 27 yo 5th yr in 2010. Played thru game 7, 4.6 avg.

  11. This is the best draft in history, damn I’m soooo stoked!!

  12. chuck_easton says:

    Come on TruBlu,

It’s a GAY, GAY, GAY world today. (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

And I mean the happy, carefree, everythings coming up roses, meaning of the world (again, not that there’s anything wrong with the other one…).

  13. This is absolutely a wonderful day. It’s been a great few days. This offense needed explosive playmakers — we got a WR and a RB, both playmakers… we added a motivated LenWhale to move the chains… and most importantly, we added Okung to allow our playmakers a better chance to make some plays…

I have always liked and respected Leon Washington. As one guy on NFLN said, Washington is almost a CJ Spiller clone (at a heck of a discount)…

  14. Dukeshire says:

I am ALL IN. Happy Happy Joy Joy.

This is one of greatest drafts in franchise history. Hyperbole? Perhaps. Accurate? Li key. Holy S**t.

  15. EyeAmBaldman says:

TruBlue is funny. Happy happy joy joy! :) JJ is gone and so is Rankin.

  16. Cameron Sheffield 6-2/257 DE to KC?

  17. alseahawk says:

ESPN had injury update on Washington….he’s on schedule to be ready for the season. Only running straight lines but recovering.

  18. Trading Julius Jones would look like a good move right about now.

  19. mkelly534 says:

    I am also Mr. Happy.

  20. BobbyAyala says:

    Pete rules.

    Pack up your haterade, donks.

  21. Speakin’ of bein’ a hommer, it was cool to see’n te’o and butler go in the third.

  22. Dukeshire – its about this point in every draft that I’m usually jumping around thinking its the greatest draft in team history. Well, yeah, I’m doing it again. Here’s Hoping!

  23. BenderHawkFan says:

Draft has been really good fo sho. Washingtons injury was no joke though. Hopefully he’ll be ready both physically and mentally. That break was naaasty.

  24. EyeAmBaldman says:

That’s why the Jets took McKnight…they probably already had this trade in the works. Hawks are doing well.

  25. BobbyK – It’s going to be about Hasselbeck fulfilling all the promises you made last year on what he could do if he had a decent team around him.

The OL is decent, the WRs, TEs and RBs are SOLID. The secondary is better.

But what about the pass rush and QB position? Will Curry and Hasselbeck do what we need to get back to the land of the playoffs?

  26. I definately didn’t feel this way last year

  27. Dukeshire says:

Lol, We forget too easily sometimes, don’t we? This has been an amazing day draft however.

  28. I still don’t think were going in the playoffs this year, but what we’ve done these 3 days are remarkable, we’ve had one the best draft day(s) of any team in the league. Think about what we would have done if Ruskell/Mora was still here, probably sucked. This team is going places under this new organization, I can feel it.

  29. My comment for what it’s worth…

We have a fresh stable of running backs. We reloaded our defensive backfield. Met the need on O-Line

all before 9:30 am in the morning. hehe. I will parrot all those above. Very happy about this day! Our roster, with the draft picks last year and our proven veterans, is a rockin’ team.

Always loved the Seahawks, and I look forward to this season.

  30. I love you guys!

  31. edstang45 says:

Can anyone tell that Mr.Washington can bee 100% after that nasty break?? Please tell me it will not be a issue so I can be happy

  32. Ok, so where’s our OG ???

Max Unger and old Ben Hamilton can’t do it all by themselves.

  33. Its not a sure thing that Washington is 100% by openeing day.

  34. JazBadAzz says:

    when do we pick again?

  35. JMSeaTown says:

    PC loves playmakers

  36. EyeAmBaldman says:

I don’t think the hawks will make the playoffs this year either but they will NOT look like the same underachieving, underperfoming sack of crap that Mora put on the field last year. THAT’s what gets me excited about this season.

  37. JMSeaTown says:

JJ in a package deal for Gaither..?

  38. Dukeshire says:

If I am to complain about anything it’s that they haven’t addresses the o line interior. As Stevo said, need some real depth there.

  39. BobbyAyala says:

From the time Pete was hired until Thursday the Seahawks have been linked to both the Chargers and Broncos and the resounding thought was that both of the former AFC West foes got the better of Seattle.

Following this draft, especially in light of the desperation moves pulled off by both the Chargers and Broncos, and considering how the Whitehurst deal looks now because of Golden Tate, clearly Mr. Happy been able to change a lot of minds around the city and country.

    And hopefully around here too.

  40. chuck_easton says:

Washington is running straight ahead already. He and his Dr.’s are confident that he’ll be back by camp.

That being said, a broken bone (if set right) usually heals as strong or stronger than before the break. If he had it put back together and there were no complications he should be fine.

ACL’s and such usually are never the same after the injury. Bones mend.

  41. BobbyAyala says:

They have guard depth. Obviously either Lock or Willis is moving to guard.

  42. pabs – you’re absolutely right! Aside from taking a bit of time to gel… this is Matt’s time to shine… he has a good team around him… there are no more excuses for poor play…

Okung/Hamilton are going to improve the left side… Unger will naturally be better because almost every 2nd year player always has a better year than when they were a rookie and Lock is back to solidify RT… In my mind, we improve at 4 of 5 offensive line positions and if Spencer can stay healthy that will improve 5 out of 5… I don’t project to have a top 5 OL but I can say that we will not have one of the top 10 worst OLs either (where IMO we had the worst last year… with Wash and Buf close behind).

Matt needs to shake out the idea that he’s going to get killed every time he drops back and get that confidence back (as I believe the OL will be better and Matt will trust them after a few weeks of him dropping back to pass and realizing he’s not getting killed like he has gotten used to). Once he has that, this offense is going to roll… and this team is going to roll…

If Matt has a good season and if Curry ends up with 14 sacks, I think we’re going to be playing football into mid-January (at least). Duke – don’t blow reality back my way:)

  43. bulldog80 says:

There’s a lot of love in this room……………….

  44. TruBlu…. I didn’t feel this way last year either, though I wanted Curry and we got him…

Part of that feeling was the result of my coaching expectations….

Sure has been a fun few days….

  45. Dukeshire says:

I’ll let you dream today. Tomorrow the real work begins.

  46. BenderHawkFan says:

Bones mend, but that was 2 breaks and a compound fracture. Theres more potential problems than just bones in an injury like that.

  47. Haven’t felt this good since the last time my wife broke out the jar of peanut butter.

  48. edstang45 says:

Thanks chuck_easton yea I have heard where he is at in his rehab , nice to here about bone mending stronger. This is great news

  49. Even if Washington isn’t ready to go, losing JJ is an upgrade by itself.

  50. Pat_riot says:

The Jets just released Faneca (sp?) … should we swoop him up and add another veteran person to rotate through that rejuvenated OL?!!!

  51. Its weird seein’ Mora talk about the draft

  52. The Jets released Faneca? Wow. He’s obviously not worth that huge contract he had, but he’s still better than many guards in the NFL.

I predict we draft at least 1 OL with our remaining 3 picks. Or 2.

  53. EyeAmBaldman says:

Anyone notice that Johanthan Dwyer and Anthony Dixon are still available?!?!?!? I’m surprised about Dwyer.

  54. I would bet 1000 dollars that Mora/Ruskell would’ve used our #6 overall on Rolando McClain, and our #14 on Bruce Cambell.

  55. EyeAmBaldman says:

I think NFLN said Faneca would be released on Monday.

  56. Who’s Otis Hudson?

  57. johansonrs says:

  58. EyeAmBaldman – me too. Why’s Dwyer is still falling?

  59. The Jets are despearately trying to get something for Faneca, but won’t with that contract.

The Jags and Redskins are still trying to give away John Henderson and Jason Campbell.

  60. hawkforever21 says:

Yeah, it seems like they have the horses to allow Washington the time to recover.

I have loved this draft more than any draft in recent memories. Need picks, quality picks, trades to fill in some other holes.

I still wonder (and question) the Whitehurst trade….and what they gave up, but only time will tell on a few of these moves.

Looking forward to 2010 BIG TIME!!!

  61. EyeAmBaldman says:

Otis Hudson was the standout player for Eastern Illinois.

  62. So, if his leg mends, does L.Washington return kicks for Hawks?

  63. EyeAmBaldman says:

klm008: I’m guessing because of the system he played in? He did have the positive tests at the combine, but they were medical reasons. I’m amazed. I watched Dwyer a lot this year, and I thought he was a beast RB.

  64. It’s obvious that this FO is fully aware of where this team needs to improve. We have three more picks and then our guys are going after undrafted FAs. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if we see more trades. There are going to be released after the draft, so look for us to scoop up more players that way.

We’re going to have a solid team going into camp this year. If we have another draft next year like this one, that should put us over the top.

Don’t be surprised if we sneak away then NFC West title this year. The potential is there. What if a couple of these players really step up this year. What if all of a sudden things just lick for the Williams brothers.

Those guys have physical talent to be drafted in the top ten. And, now there backs are against the wall knowing this is there last chance, so they’re going to be motivated more than they ever have…This is going to be an exciting season!

  65. JazBadAzz says:

Faneca is not a ZB gaurd. Hw was having trouble pass blocking last year and he’salmost 35yo.

  66. Jet fans are mad about getting only a 5th for Washington. I would be too, if I were them. Especially since we also got a 7th rounder in return.

pabs – where are you hearing this stuff about Henderson? At this point, I would give up a 6th for him (and then take 2 OL with our final 2 picks).

  67. The only thing I like about the whitehurst trade (so far) is we didn’t draft a QB early.

  68. Dukeshire says:

klm008 – Carroll has already said Tate will be returning.

Now that Lendale is aboard I don’t see anyway they take Dwyer.

  69. Maybe Jax would take our 7th rounder (from the Jets) for Henderson?

  70. EyeAmBaldman says:

TruBlu, you gotta like Charlie’s Jesus-like beard!

  71. raymaines says:

Whitehurst trade: I see that Toby Gerhart and Taylor Mays were drafted between 40 and 60. Time will tell I suppose, but I’m thinking this was poor trade.

  72. Yeah, Faneca is old and not the player he used to be.. but he can still run block and is a great locker room presence. Granted we got that in Hamilton.. but as we’ve seen over the last few years, you can never have to many pieces in the OL. Who knows.. one thing I do know is that after these last few days I am officially PUMPED for football again!!!! AWESOME draft pete/schneider!!

  73. Henderson?

Why would AZ take Skelton before Tony Pike, Dan LeFevour, & Jonathan Crompton?

  74. SeahawkMarsh says:

Wow…what a great day. I’m in Virginia Beach right now, and I think I’m staying at a hotel just a few feet from the conference room where Kam Chancellor is having his draft party! Pretty crazy indeed! I can’t wait for this season.

  75. EyeAmBaldman says:

Duke, I don’t see them taking Dwyer either but I’m just stunned that he’s still available. And what about the DE from Troy…Lang? Is he still available?

  76. Its certain that the Jags are trying to give away Henderson in the low rounds, but its my own speculation/wish the Seahawks trade for him.

My wish list for trades the past few weeks:
1). Ted Ginn, Jr. for a 5th round instead of BM- went to SF for the 5th round
2). LenDale White for at 5th-6th rounder – they got him even cheaper
3). John Henderson for the 6th rounder

  77. bulldog80 says:

I’m really surprised we haven’t made trades involving Branch or Hill.

  78. EyeAmBaldman says:

klm008, Skelton is a good quarterback. I really like LeFevour and expect him to go in the 6th. Skelton has a chance to the Cardinals starter in a year or two.

  79. Dukeshire says:

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t surprised too.

  80. bulldog80 says:

Will anyone else admit to having slightly expected a Matt trade as well?

  81. Branch, JJ, Hill’s $$contracts$$ are too big.

  82. I didn’t expect a Matt trade.

I don’t think anyone wants Hill with the expected suspension and the fact that he can’t ever stay healthy for 16 games.

I’d be lying too if I said I expected Branch to stick around (especially after Golden Tate).

  83. Dukeshire says:

I don;t expect a Hass trade. I never thought that was a possibility. Since Branch has seemed to make it through the draft I think he’s here to stay, for good or ill.

    Jason Campbell to the Raiders.

  84. Carroll has said several times that “Matt’s our guy”.

  85. JazBadAzz says:

I would like Big John Henderson as a seahawks, he gets slapped in the mouth befor games to get pumped up.

Maybe he can get Owen to head butt him in the chops so they both will be jacked up befor games!

  86. JazBadAzz says:

    I’ll trade Matt for a 1st rounder next year…

  87. Even if Faneca is overpaid, if I were a Jets fan, I would find it troubling that they are releasing him. That OL has started every game together for the last 2 years and now they are screwing up the chemistry. This makes no sense since they seem to be going balls out for a Super Bowl run THIS year. Besides, there’s no cap, so it really has me scratching my head.

  88. Hen-der-son, Hen-der-son, Hen-der-son!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  89. ruminator1 says:

Like everyone else, very excited by draft and trades. The whole thing has the PC buzz word about it: COMPETITION. Plenty of competition at key spots; no one can rest easy. Camp should be really fun to watch.

  90. How many RB’s are they going to keep? Jones is obviously gone. My ? is whether Forsett is gone also.

  91. Hawks have Colin Cole. John Henderson would be a nice add – but what makes you think JAX wants rid of him?

  92. klm – that’s my Q about Henderson too.

I think we have 3 very capable RBs. Each can do certain things well. Even though Washington/Forsett are smallish, they aren’t the same type of player either.

  93. That was an interesting apology by Matt Milan

  94. Washington was the faster, maybe he still gets to the edge?

  95. Dukeshire says:

This is from yesterday but probably where a lot of the trade talk stemmed from.

  96. Oops, there goes Newhouse

Didn’t realize Hawks gave the 6th to TEN (for White?) too.

  97. bulldog80 says:

Regardless of the scheme utilizing our LB’s, I’m still concerned about the pass rush. Hopefully they’ve got more DE’s in mind to bring to camp.

  98. Oh – traded 6ths w/TEN

  99. DE’s & OG’s

  100. Alex Gibbs still needs a rookie guard, center and right tackle to mentor. Gibbs will retire soon. Okung, rookie, rookie, Unger, rookie. O line for the next 10 years.

  101. Penn State LB Sean Lee is now a Cowboy.

  102. EyeAmBaldman says:

Selvish Capers and Shelley Smith are still available at OL.

  103. Does anybody know if Thomas Austin or Charlie Tanner has been picked? If they haven’t they are probably my favorite guards left, now that Nwhouse got picked.

  104. Oh and Shelly Smith as well.

  105. OG Charlie Tanner is still on the board, and no Thomas Austin has been selected.

  106. EyeAmBaldman says:

Eric Olsen, C, Notre Dame would be good too.

  107. Thomas Austin has not been selected

  108. Shelly Smith is also still available

  109. Looks like Holmgren got a good WR in Carlton Mitchell 6-3/215

  110. At least there’s still a good amount of talent available at the OG position, let’s hope we pick one of them, or ad depth to another position, we can’t fix everything in one draft, so maybe OG is not a priority?

  111. EyeAmBaldman says:

I like Carlton Mitchell. Good wideout…should have went higher.

  112. What about taking Selvish Capers and turning him into a guard?

  113. EyeAmBaldman says:

    Or Adam Ulatoski from Texas?

  114. Interesting time at this juncture in the draft… PC might have the edge here….

Next step, the ‘invitees’ … PC clearly must have an advantage there…. Knowledge plus a team looking to make all positions competitive… to a point, all must win their position over again…. Great opportunity to come in and know one has ‘A Chance’……

  115. Dorin Dickerson would make for a good, tall WR with speed.

  116. Wow – – love this trade – I was hoping we might target Washington, or someone like him – perfect fit for what we needed. If Lendale can get in shape and be our big back – w/him and Washington we’ve filled that hole for peanuts.

Nice moves by this front office. Damn.
