Hamilton will serve mentor for Okung

Seahawks offensive line coach Alex Gibbs said recent free agent signee Ben Hamilton will play left guard and serve as a mentor for new left tackle Russell Okung, the same thing Hamilton did when he helped a young Ryan Clady learn the zone blocking system in Denver.

“You can’t throw him out there without someone to guide them,” Gibbs said. “We needed a player that had done that, and knew the system that I knew, to help him make the transfer. That’s what Ben is for.

“Ben will line up inside of him and guide him through this whole process. So he’s Coach one, I’m Coach two. That’s why he’s here.”

Gibbs said he was a bit anxious waiting for Kansas City to select at No. 5 with Okung still on the board.

“I was scared to death because I know (Chief line coach Bill Muir) line coach there very well and he wanted this kid as bad, or worse, than I did,” Gibbs said. “And he didn’t get him. So we quickly texted him and said, ‘Ha, ha,’ and all that good stuff. “We’re all in the same community and we all think together so that’s kind of the way it is.”

Listen to Gibbs talks about Okung in the audio file down below.

PS – And while SF strengthened their squad, LETS HOPE AND PRAY the Rams plug Bradford in immediately.

They’re so screwed up that I’m sure they will. And Bradford will GET KILLED ala David Carr.

The Rams have zero weapons outside of Jackson (seriously, do they even have 5 WR on the team yet?) And, their OL sucks.

Hopefuly Curry can put a hurtin’ on him.

PS – I REALLY like what the Lions did. Man, they have playmakers all over on offense now.

  2. Ben Hamilton signed a 1-year contract. And he’s Okung’s “coach” from the LG position.

I firmly believe that Ben Hamilton needs another player to coach in the form of a LG who will take over for him after next year. This brings us to (broken record) Mike Johnson. He’s powerful (the leader of the OL for the National Champs and Heisman winner) and athletic (he took over at Left Tackle last year when Andre Smith was suspended from the Alabama bowl game).

He’s the perfect guy to add early in the 3rd round (so trade down from #60 and get an extra pick). The only way I wouldn’t consider a trade down scenario is if Brian Price is available with our #60 pick. And if that happened, I would be okay with trading up from round 4 to get him.

  3. wabubba67 says:

Find a way to get Charles Brown…I’ve never been a fan of Locklear and you can never have too many athletic, nasty offensive linemen.

  4. Hawkfan1951 says:

I’m thrilled with the #6 selection of Okung!!! FINALLY… after 4 years of bandaids, the Hawks get a serious O lineman (well, man and a half!)

If they need someone to mentor oKung… why not hire Walter Jones? It seems to me, Okung would definately listen to Walter!

    GREAT 1st round picks!!!

    Keep it going Seahwaks!!

  5. This interview with Gibbs makes me very hopeful. Hamilton sounds like a great fit and Alex Gibbs sounds large and in-charge. I like it. I just hope Hamilton’s body can hold up for a whole year. This seems a little like the Mike Wahle situation… Hamilton may be a great leader for our line, but for how long?

Yes, we still need to draft another OG. Maybe Mike Johnson in the 3rd or Marshall Newhouse in the 4th.

  6. vichawkfan says:

Okung should shut up all the “must get LT” pundits….if they think Okung isn’t worthy – then they should just dig a hole and jump into it. I never thought he’d slide, 2,4,5 with tackle needs and this kid is the real deal my friends.

  7. With Hamilton only signing a 1-year deal, he’s definitely a band-aid. But a good, solid band-aid. One thing with him is that he’s not going to get mentally beat. We had too much of that with Spencer at C (which makes me wonder why the hell he’s still at C), Sims at LG, and Unger at RG (and every 2nd year player improves by leaps and bounds so expect a much better Unger in ’10).

  8. I think Seattle will draft at least two more O linemen.

Question: Draft Colt McCoy at #40 and keep next years third round pick or trade for Charlie Whitehurst?

  9. kurtthekraut says:

    We have #60

  10. kurtthekraut says:

    lol oops its late

  11. BrianBlades says:

    Stoked on the draft! OKUNG!

Best case for us. With Spiller gone at 14, I can live with Thomas since it’s such a need.

Did anyone else see Jamie Dukes completely WRECK Jim Mora on NFL network tonight? Just made the night that much better. Moron was jizzing over Tebow and Dukes wrecked him…

Hey, BobbyK, if Spencer actually steps up and performs at center this year (because he isn’t injured and has decent coaches) will you stop posting like a neurotic girl? If he sucks, I’ll stop posting, what do you say?

  12. HawkfaninMT says:

    To Brian Blades~

I actually am excited to see Bobby ripping on Spencer. He did the same thing to Sims and Sims was actually watchable this last year… Hopefully the “Bobby-This-Guy-Sucks” magic will work on SPencer too!!

  13. So, what you’re trying to say is that Mike Solari, one of the most respected offensive line teachers in the NFL, sucks as a coach?

Mike Solari, a guy who is generally considered one of the best OL coaches in the NFL?

If you actually think Solari isn’t a “decent” coach, well, um, okay…

But you’re right about Spencer and the injury situation. However, every year he has some type of injury. It’s happened the past four years so why should we think this upcoming year is going to be any different? There’s a disturbing pattern and I don’t like it. Again, you’re right, he could have a good year with Gibbs IF he stays healthy but I don’t like the odds…

  14. goneshootin says:

BrianBlades – Yeah, Dukes dropped the hammer on Coach Moron. The best was Mora’s comments last night. Can’t remember the team – I think it was the Cowboys – but Mora said, “Yeah, the won 4-5 down the stretch last year. It just shows how much and how hard they wanted to play for their coach.”

And, I’m thinking, does this clown NEVER LEARN to STFU already? He has the worst case of verbal diarrhea/foot-in-mouth disease I’ve ever seen.

His mouth got him fired in Atlanta when he went on KJR saying UW was his “dream job” WHILE the Falcons were in the playoff hunt! Then, throws the kicker under the bus for the Chicago game, and then, two weeks later, the OL.

The guy is just a clown; inspires zero confidence. In all honestly, I’m absolutely shocked that he was EVER given a head coaching job, let alone twice.

And, with his parting comments with the Hawks, he’ll definitely never get a head coaching job in the NFL again. Probably not even a coordinator.

But, like always, he’ll try to save face and say that “the college game really excites me”.

Thank God he and Ruskell are gone.

  15. goneshootin says:

    I know Solari was/is considered a good OL coach…

BUT THAT LINE WAS BEYOND TERRIBLE last year. It was NOT coached up at all.

Whether it was bad coaching, or lack of player “buy in”, it was still bad coaching all the same.

  16. sugashack says:

I find it a bit fascinating that no one is suggesting we DEs but instead look at more offensive line depth. Take a look at our DE depth chart. If LoJack being our top DE is any indication then we need to focus in the third round on the DE position. Dunlap wouldn’t be a bad choice (ya, some character issues) but I don’t know if he’ll be around. To me, you have to address those outside line positions on defense.

  17. goneshootin – where have you been? It’s been awhile.

Next topic: I think there comes a point on any bad team where teams almost give up… we saw it with Mora in that final month (certainly not defending him)… With that being said, I think Solari had some terrible “talent” to work with too. When your best player is Rob Sims (who missed time again), that’s not saying much. Sure, he improved, but if you’re the best player on, arguably, the worst OL in the NFL, can that really be considered a compliment? I’m happy he’s gone.

Unger was a R. We know he’s going to be fine, but he had your stereotypical R year for an interior OL. In year two, he’ll leapfrog Sims in OL production (whether he’s C or RG) no matter if Sims were still here or not (which would not make him our best OL in ’10).

    Spencer – uhhh, next.

Lock is a terrible LT. This we know (but a good RT). But adding a LT who had been waived and nobody wanted? And also starting a back-up to a back-up at LT?

That’s not much to work with if you’re Solari. Talk about being put in a position to fail. But, yeah, with the lack of player “buy in” after you keep getting beat, you can definitely tell it was time for Solari to move on too (and I’m glad someone who is more highly thought of is replacing him, which is saying something good). Sometimes we all need a fresh start and it’s that way for Solari and the Seahawks. I’m excited for ’10…

  18. With the 49ers drafting 2 OL in the 1st round, I have a feeling Solari is going to look smarter this year.

  19. goneshootin says:

BobbyK – Thanks for the welcome back. Been head down/full tilt in my business. Coming back up for air… and more Hawks!

Obviously, I was being facetious with Solari. By all accounts – John Clayton, Charlie Casserly, Chris Mortenson – Solari is one of the best line coaches in the NFL. And the NFL is their full-time job.

But, you’re right… he didn’t have much to work with. And, you’re also right about players just getting to a point and giving up. Clearly that’s what happened.

    He’ll do well in SF.

HOWEVER, I’m REALLY, REALLY, REALLY glad that Martz is out of the division. He’s a terrific OC and leaving SF for Chicago helps the Hawks, a lot.

And, it’s really like we have 3 1st round, Pro Bowl caliber players being added (Curry, Okung, Thomas). Because Curry was wasted last year with trying to make him think and cover. I have a feeling Carrol is going to let him fly off the edge ala Lawrence Taylor. I think the coaching he’ll get is, “Just make plays.”

Anyway, even though our picks were no brainers, I give the Hawks an A+.

And, I wouldn’t mind trading up to get McCoy. I REALLY think he’ll be the best QB in this draft. Hass is gone next year and Whitehurst only has 1 year on his deal.

    It’ll be interesting.

    A+ for today.

  20. Yeah, as we said on a previous post, if you’re right on the Curry rushing on passing downs… this was an A+ type of day…

I can’t believe we have an improved OL, a real S, and a guy who may be used to his strengths (Curry – getting after the QB). It’s definitely a good day!

  21. williambryan says:

concerning last seasons line and lack of “talent”, think back to the end of Holmgrens last season, when Williams Vallos, and Wrotto were all starting and they were successfull. No matter who was in there, the offense was very functional. What do we chalk that up to? Holmgren is a far superior coach to mora and the last two years make that obvious. All of these guys are capable of playing pro football at a high level or else they wouldn’t be there. Solari is a respected coach but look at where and when he had success in KC, with guys like Roaf, and Watters and Tait. When Roaf and Tait were gone and Watters got old, all of the sudden Larry Johnson wasn’t a good back anymore… Maybe Solari isn’t that good of a coach? IDK… But Gibbs reputation is superior to that of Solari’s so I think there is hope in that.

I’m hoping for Dexter McClutcheon (SP?) in the second round

  22. vichawkfan says:

anyone but me give Knapp some credit for sucking cack? O-line was only doing it’s job….when plays that make no sense are called, it’s nobody’s fault….think about it, he was FIRED from the RAIDERS the year before.

  23. I think Dunlap will be available 10 picks into the second round, and that we could move up to get him with one of our 4s. I believe he’s a high end talent and would not only start right away but could be a difference maker. I had thought that if we traded back from 14 to late in the 1st he may have been a target.
Also, I couldn’t be much happier with the day 1 picks.

And I hated the format, at the end of the round I just wanted the second round to start. I want draft Saturday back!

  24. Dunlap? Pete is a smart drafter, he’s not gonna touch Dunlap.

  25. BrianBlades –
I think you’re right. It is likely we will see Spencer “step up and perform at center this year (because he isn’t injured and has decent coaches)…”

Expect Spencer to play better this year. The dude has been through a lot of nasty injuries but he’s proven his toughness and came to mini-camp in top shape. He deserves some good luck in his career for a change. He has the kind of athleticism a Center needs to succeed in Alex Gibb’s system.

And yes, our O line did suffer from crappy coaching last season. I’m not blaming Coach Solari, I am blaming our crappy Offensive Coordinator who had the entire offense confused and mis-communicating, and I am blaming our crappy HC who kept that OC in charge through 16 games. The entire offense got worse as the season went on. That was bad coaching.

And, I’m not sure where some people get the idea that Max Unger will have an amazing sophomore season. He spent his rookie year getting beat badly at RG, where he played like a taller version of Steve Vallos. Its not clear to me that he has the movement and balance Alex Gibbs expect in his linemen. I am hopeful for him, but he still has a lot to prove. All Spencer needs to do is stay healthy and he’ll do fine.

  26. freedom_X says:

In Solari’s defense, I think all those great players in KC were retreads. The Saints jettisoned Roaf, and KC rejuvenated his career. Watters was an undrafted free agent who was developed into an All Pro. Love to see that happen in Seattle. I hate that Solari is in SF.

Basically, I don’t think zone blocking is really Solari’s strength. So that probably didn’t go as well as it could have last year. But in SF, where Singletary wants a power offense (despite them throwing the ball like crazy the last half of the season) Solari will fit right in.

I don’t think Unger looks like a budding superstar, but I believe he was solid last year. He got beaten physically at times, but that’s why he’s just a promising prospect instead of a instant hit. I’m looking forward to him being a very respectable starter next year, by that I mean a player who is good enough to start for any line in the league without being the weak link. A solid player. This is boosted by my expectation Unger’s skills fit right in with what Gibbs wants and needs from his linemen.

  27. freedom – yeah, I agree. I don’t mean to say Unger is bad. He had a rookie year that was unspectacular. I just have to disagree with some of the guys here who like to insist that Unger belongs at center. From what I’ve seen, he’s done nothing to take Spencer’s job.

Also, here’s an idea that keeps rolling around in my mind while re-watching last years games. With Locklear freed-up from having to play LT, he might not end up back at RT, he might be a good fit at RG in Gibbs’ offense. Gibbs likes mobile guards. Unger just might end up competing for a job at RT, where he might fit well.

    Okung-Hamilton-Spencer-Locklear-Unger ?

  28. surelyyoujest says:

I think it’s incredible that Gibbs was so excited about Okung that he actually came out and raved about him to the media. I was wondering if any of the OT’s were worth that high a pick, and that question was answered for me when I read Gibbs comments this morning. If the kid is good enough for Coach Gibbs to praise openly, then wow.

I see some trades in our future today, to move up or out of round 2.

  29. Dukeshire says:

I too would be surprised if there weren’t some trades today. Perfect world; move up in 2nd and get a 3rd. I would settle for acquiring a 3rd however.

I went back and looked at everyone’s mocks from earlier yesterday and was surprised to see how many people had the ‘Hawks taking Okung and Thomas. I believe there were 4. I thought there wouldn’t be many of us who took Okung. Nice job Thomas people.

  30. I would trade our pick #60 to cleveland for their picks #85 and #92.

Select Rashad Jones DB Georgia and Mike Johnson OG LSU!

  31. Dukeshire says:

As it stands now, they have only one pick today and I’d like to see them use that on the d line (presuming the right player is available, of course.) Lamarr Houston inside, or Everson Griffen or Jermaine Cunningham on the end.

It’s incredibly refreshing to see them addressing needs in a sound and pragmatic way. From purging the roster to addressing the 2 biggest needs on the team in the first round. I am really excited about the direction Carroll / Schneider are taking this team. Keep it up, men.

  32. Nighthawk2:

Shall we revisit my “Let me connect the dots for you” post about Jimmy Clausen?

The proof, as I said, is in the pudding.

Great Draft Hawks! I would have preferred Graham at 14 but Philly knew we had him on our radar.

Two impact players at need positions is a spectacular start. Let’s finish strong!

  33. I’m so ecstatic, don’t think we could have gotten a much better first round.

  34. edstang45 says:

For those of you who are worried about Earl Thomas’s size

    ED Redd- 5-10 200 lbs
    Troy Paulumalu- 5-10 200lbs

So relax this guy is going to be a major help in our backfeild

  35. i dont write to much but follow alot and want to say that i love the thomas pick even more than okung and im so happy we have a left takle

it was a great first day

if spencer gets hurt every year why is this year going to be any different

  36. goneshootin says:

HEY… Anyone know anything about some RB from Ole Miss or Miss State?

Can’t remember the name exactly; might be “Mucucheon” “McCl…. something?

Anyone, I’ve never seen him or his scouting review. But, Brock Huard, who worked SEC games for ESPN last year, absolutely raved about him.

Behind Spiller, Davis and Best, he said he was nearly as good a playmaker.

Curious what you guys have seen and/or read. Thanks.

  37. This FA pick up in Hamilton will be the best move for Okung. Who cares if he’s here for 1 year, as long as he can teach the line the system, then they can teach it to the next guy. This was the best first round the Hawks have had since Jones / Springs. Both sides of the ball were handled with great picks. I would imagine that the Hawks war room definitely paid attention to waht SF did. They are going to become the new Denver Broncos for me. The one division team that I just hate more then any other division team. They will battle us for the next 10 years. I believe now the Hawks have to shore up the D line, after that I really don’t care who they pick. That first round will updrade the team instatly.

  38. goneshootin his name is Dexter McCluster, and yes he could be a very productive player, he is versatile and though even though he isn’t that big, I like him.

  39. Dukeshire says:

goneshootin – Dexter McCluster. Real small but quick as grease lightning. Reminiscent of Darren Sproles. One thing that blew me away about him at the combine was his bench reps. He weighs 170 lbs (maybe) yet still threw up 20 reps at 225lbs. That is impressive.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=191216

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hb-chWh64Dc

  40. Another thing about McCluster is that he was also their best WR (didn’t move to RB until about half way through the season and still gained about 1,000 rushing!).

  41. goneshootin says:

JacDg, Dukeshire, BobbyK – Man, I miss this blog. I need to stay with it regularly!

THANKS A LOT for the scouting info. THAT’S WHY I didn’t look the guy up; I figured different people would see different things.

Sounds maybe a bit like Devin Hester??? Anyway, I’d sure like a play-maker who’s not an every down back.

Again, Huard said his play-making ability is off the chart; as good as anyone’s in the draft. Just wouldn’t want to use him every down.

I like him… or trading up to get McCoy.

  42. surelyyoujest says:

goneshootin, I think the name you’re looking for is Dexter McCluster. It would be a great pick at 60, but I don’t see him being there. He’s a bit of a Percy Harvin type, but perhaps not quite as good of a receiver…..but he has great hands.

If the Seahawk brass have their eye on a playmaker, the 2nd round is where they’ll likely make their move. CB, WR, or RB. If they miss their guy, they might trade down. If they think they have a shot, they’ll look to move up.

  43. zombiehooliganfc says:

What a great first day! Hawks pick up some good talent that will hopefully pan out and I now know more about Rachel Nicholes, Amy Mentik, and Suzy Kolber for my next rounds of discussion with friends.

  44. goneshootin says:

surely – Thanks, man. Heck, if he’s 75% of Percy Harvin, I’ll take him.

But, if he’s that good, you’re right, he won’t be there at 60.

  45. goneshootin says:

    QUICK PREDICTION TIME:

    1. What position for the #60 pick?
    2. Will they move up?

I’m thinking the Hawks will move up into the 40s, and grab the best play-making RB on the board; possibly WR.

Frankly, I don’t see them using it on a DE this low in the draft. We’ve been burned by Tapp, Jackson, etc. and it just seems you have to get a guy in the top 20.

    What do you predict?

  46. Reportedly his stock has been rising so not sure if he’s there, but he would for sure be a good pick, we need players that can create big things, but with only one pick today I think we’ll have to go D-line or Ben Tate

  47. Dukeshire says:

My guess is that they will select the highest rated player they have between DT, WR and RB. I don’t necessarly see them locking in on a specific position like yesterday. A little more flexability.

  48. Rob Rang usually has the pulse of the Seahawks but Clausen at #6? Too funny.

  49. I have heard Gibbs make comments about how he likes later round running backs simply because they have to fight to make team. Basically, if they don’t listen to the coaches with respect to the 1-cut and run mentality then they will be gone. They have leverage. They don’t always have that leverage with guys in the first couple of rounds because everyone knows they will make the team. We’ll see…

  50. If you look back at Gibbs and his rookie late round RB’s he’s a LOT of success, it usually only last a year, but he has had quite a few 1000 yard rookie rushers that’s been late round picks (as far as I recall)

  51. zombiehooliganfc says:

Who is going to fight the hardest? Gerhart. He has the most to prove and is playing with a chip on his shoulder. Not to mention he is another physical beast that can run.

  52. Palerydr says:

If I were to be disappointed about anything it’s that we were unable to complete a deal to move down and add picks like Denver and Miami did.

  53. oceanic – I think Rang had the “pulse” of the Seahawks because he knew what Ruskell looked for; seniors from major schools with good character. Most draft “experts” had us taking players who he never would have considered like character risks, juniors, etc. I don’t think he had any insider information, just used common sense when it came to the Seahawks because he knew of what Ruskell would look for.

  54. Moving up in round 2 today would make a lot of sense – especially since we have two 4s and two 5′s to deal. We also have Leroy Hill to offer up in trade.

Now that Buffalo has three good RBs, maybe its time to offer them something for Marshawn Lynch? Bills could use an LB like Hill.

As much as I want a pass rushing DE (Everson Griffin?) the most important thing for the rest of this draft is playmakers on offense. How many times last year did we watch our defense looked overwhelmed simply because the offense failed time after time and left the D stuck with a short field. We need playmakers on offense, and O line depth.

  55. Here’s a John Clayton link on winners/losers…. Day one….

    (yup, we’re winners….)

Note particularly the notes on Earl Thomas… and what may happen… pretty impressive….

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft10/columns/story?columnist=clayton_john&id=5127822

  56. The mock drafts sure did blow it on Clausen, didn’t they. I have a feeling he will end up in Minnesota, and a couple years from now everyone will wonder why they didn’t draft him.

And once again, Josh McDaniel wins the ‘what-the-heck-was-he-thinking’ award.

The Seahawks drafted for need, but when you are at 6 and 14 you can do that. They did not disappoint. SF and AZ did well also. We will need to keep improving both O and D lines to catch up with them.

  57. freedom_X says:

I think Seattle liked Earl Thomas too much to trade down. This wasn’t like last year when potentially, the value wasn’t there. Seattle’s pick appears to have been just a little too low and a little too high to draw heavier trade action – all the trades stopped right after Seattle’s pick and didn’t resume until 22.

  58. zombiehooliganfc says:

I agree freedom, I was thinking they could have dropped a few spots and still got Thomas or one of the two DE’s. They probably figured that it would be best to take who they wanted versus who was left after it was all settled, which I can’t cry too much about.

  59. I agree with Steveos on his call, the Hawks need playmakers on O and more depth on that line. However, I can’t imagine them not addressing the DL in the 2nd. They will probably try, and I emphasize the word try to trade up. The only problem is the start of the 2nd round has so much talent that a lot fo teams are trying to trade up. With Clausen still on the board and teams like Cleveland, Oakland, and Buffalo hovering around, the Hawks will pay a steep price. Mayock has been saying that any team can get starting DL all the way until the 4th, so would a trade up make sense? However any way you slice it DL and RB should be the next two picks.

  60. Like the Clayton link says… Thomas mentioned in the context of a future all-pro, we also had the need… I believe you nailed it Freedom….
Consider also, Thomas taken over a USC guy at the same position….

  61. As much as I would like to move up a bit to get Brian Price (I know and respect that most of you want playmakers — we do need them) I think we need to stand pat or trade down from #60. I don’t want to trade away picks. We still have plenty of holes: SS, DE, DT, OG (take over for Hamilton in ’11), WR, RB, FB.

  62. Hopefully NFL.com will be able to get their stream working today, I couldn’t stand watching it on ESPN, Gruden was awesome but damn the other guys were annoying.

  63. BobbyK, goog point. Its very tempting to trade up, but the smartest strategy sometimes is to let other teams trade up and reach. We could select a bunch of good players in rounds 3,4,5 and fill some holes.

I just want at least one high-impact WR or RB who can score. “We want the ball and we’re gonna Score!”

  64. chuck_easton says:

It costs way too much to trade up. Did you see what some teams had to give up last night to trade up?

Look at Denver. They gave up a 2, 3, and 4 to move back into the 1st round to get Tebow.

Seattle isn’t one player away from being a SB contender. They need bodies not body.

More is better. Less is bad. Standing pat is OK.

  65. BenderHawkFan says:

That move by Denver was insane. I mean…seriously…wtf are they thinking? That’ll be fun to watch the trainwreck over the next few years.

I agree with not trading up. Keeping our picks this year would be a good thing–and adding even more would be a bonus.

I’m still breathing a sigh of relief that we didnt draft Clausen in the first.

  66. She said no! She said no!

When the Steelers were on the clock some people in the stands started yelling “she said no”. The NFL showed good timing to bring out the ‘make a wish’ youth. It got quiet in a hurry.

I’m glad Tebow got drafted in the first round. He is a good guy and I wish him the best.

I’m a good guy too, and a damn hard worker, but it doesnt change the fact that I can’t throw a football either. Tebow blows and that pick was a joke.

  68. goneshootin says:

JacDG – You’re right about the ESPN coverage blowing.

I was flipping back-and-forth between ESPN and NFL Network, Ch 418 HD on Comcast. The coverage isn’t even close.

If Kiper or Mortenson can talk on ESPN, it’s good. Otherwise, it’s terrible analysis. And, ESPN takes WAY MORE breaks than the NFL network. It was literally 3-to-1 in terms of breaks.

So, watch it online if you can.

  69. I’m not sure how good Tebow might become a few years from now. But what makes me crazy is that ESPN today has turned into the “Tim Tebow Network”. What the heck is so fascinating about this guy?

Tebow is probably two years away from starting in his first NFL game. What is ESPN going to do, interview him on the bench every week?

  70. Well who really cares if Tebow is a joke now, the Hawks didn’t draft him. He’s in Denver with their idiot coach, and I can’t stand them anyways. Look at their depth chart at QB: Orton, Quinn, and Tebow, he probably won’t make the field at QB. Obviously they drafted Tebow for his athletic ability period. I look for him to be in the game in the Wildcat formation, and on Special teams.

  71. goneshootin says:

FYI: Holmgren will be on at 10:30 with Softy on KJR.

Just had Okung’s college coach on, Mike Gundy. I like this pick even more now.

  72. BenderHawkFan says:

I agree rollo– except, I think it’s good entertainment to know Denver took him. Almost as entertaining as watching the Rams stay just as bad while the rest of our division got better. Man, Bradford might be fine, but I would have traded that pick and got a haul for him.

Yeah, ESPN was sooo bad last night. Those dudes all tried talking at the same time. How many people do you really need to cover the damn draft? Too many people on the set…too many conflicting egos.

Still, I wouldnt mind having Erin Andrews over to “watch rounds 2-3″ tonight. Heh.

  73. I am hopeful that the hawks may be able to pick up some good DE/DT players
after the draft after seeing how many teams drafted top rated DE/DT in the first round including the Giants, Jags, Eagles and Titans. So even if there are no viable such picks at 60, There is a good chance it will work out OK.

  74. It all feels good so far – smart, pragmatic picks that also seemed to justify their high spot in the draft. We have (strangely suddenly to me) many holes on this team – but none more glaring than LT and S – so it will be cool to see how these guys do – I assume that both will be the starters from Day 1.

Got to figure DE, RB, WR in these later rounds.

Am so glad the regime change came this off-season, just feels like there’s more reason for optimism, than if we were still looking at Mora making the calls.

Nice draft for SF too – biting the bullet and taking two big dudes to fill out the offensive line – if Smith can take a step forward at QB (a big if, I know), they’ve got a nice team brewing there.

  75. I’m watching it online, probably at JustinTV, they stream perfectly for 2 dollars which isn’t that bad, rather pay up 6 bucks than watch ESPN. The only problem is that the streams gets shut down by NFL network but it was possible to find new ones.

I was hoping for us to pick Jahvid Best today but he went yesterday so not really sure who we’ll pick, I like Eric Decker a lot at #60, so let’s see.

  76. BobbyAyala says:

    Everson Griffin slips to 60.

Hoo dawgy, I’d hate to be a Bronco or Jag fan today.

  77. Oh San Fran looks scary to me they really do, great head coach, potentially the best O-line in football, good playmakers, decent QB that should be able to manage the game and Patrick Willis on defense, they should be able to be contenders beyond the next 5 years…. God damn them, is it wrong to hope for an earthquake when the 9ers host Cardinals?

  78. BenderHawkFan says:

I’m still confused why we drafted this guy though…he doesnt look like that much of a playmaker to me, but what do I know?

  79. BobbyAyala says:

“So, what you’re trying to say is that Mike Solari, one of the most respected offensive line teachers in the NFL, sucks as a coach?

Mike Solari, a guy who is generally considered one of the best OL coaches in the NFL?

If you actually think Solari isn’t a “decent” coach, well, um, okay… ”

    Hey Mr. Corn,

Go check out the HBO Hard Knocks a few years back on the KC Chiefs (iTunes, perhaps Hulu), in which Mr. Solari is featured.

IMO, Solari is a coach that is well past his time. A ton of yelling, a “hard-nosed” mentality, but can he really reach a kid born in 1987 with those tactics?

I’ll leave the judgment up to yourself, but I for one think Solari is all reputation at this point in his career. Clearly, he didn’t reach a number of Seahawks.

  80. EyeAmBaldman says:

I doubt Griffin slips that far. I think a lot of quality DLinemen go in the top half of this round. Look for Wooten from Northwestern as an option @ 60. If Griffin’s there, he’ll be our pick, but I just don’t see it. I do hope you’re right, BobbyA.

  81. I assume this means Walt is retiring? Re: the o line in general I continue to ? moving Spencer back to Center. I kinda though Unger was the long term solution at center.

  82. BobbyAyala says:

So do I, my friend, so do I.

If we get Griffin in addition to Thomas and Okung, this will be an A+ all across the boards.

  83. EyeAmBaldman says:

FWIW, there are already Rd 2 mock drafts circulating on the net. One of them has Griffen going 56 to the Packers. Perhaps we do have a shot at him after all.

  84. EyeAmBaldman says:

Of course these same mocks have Jonathan Dwyer going to Seattle @ 60. Hmm….

  85. Dukeshire says:

An announcement on Big Walt is coming next week.

  86. Our Draft needs
I think we still need more O line for depth(those late round superheros we’ve been told Gibs can make), With SF going beasty on their O line we better look at increasing the size of our D-line/ends, a Bruiser RB, another S/DB, maybe that “blocking TE” we don’t currently have, heck with the “athletic ” T that the ZBS needs maybe we can get an athletic smallish T to convert to a blocking TE, after all all don’t all Tackles want to be elligible for that dink pass TD.
Good draft so far, FINALLY the O Line was addressed early, just wish we had an earlier 2nd round pick
