Denver Post columnist Dave Krieger offers a different perspective on WR Brandon Marshall. Krieger believes Marshall has become somewhat of a caricature in the media because of his off-the-field transgressions, which include his role in the death of former Broncos teammate Darrent Williams. But Krieger notes some of the good things Marshall has done in Denver, including mentoring at-risk youth once a week during the 2008 season.
Krieger:
Maybe it would be better for all concerned if Marshall got a fresh start elsewhere. That’s the Broncos’ call now.
But he is not a caricature. He is a bright, emotional, conflicted, accomplished athlete. And he has tried, through engagement with Open Door and his trial testimony, to compensate for whatever role he played in that tragedy more than three years ago.
Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post is hearing that the N.Y. Jets might make a play for Marshall.

nice piece on BM. I watched one of his interviews at the Pro-bowl a season ago….since then I’ve wondered how he gets such a bad rap…seemed intellingent, soft spoken and genuine. Either way, he’s coming with a huge price tag and we need to be crafty if we want him.

Packers look like Notre Dame in their alternate uniforms.
Nice piece on Marshall, but he is still not worth the investment or risk. Next.
× Flag comment
The word for Seattle (both the fans and the team) regarding BM is PATIENCE.
There doesn’t appear to be a throng, plethura, or herd of teams beating a path to Denver’s doors throwing crazy offers their way.
Denver appears to be happy to sit back and see if some team panics and signs BM to an offer sheet so Denver can get that first rounder.
BM doesn’t appear to be worth a 1st rounder.
Seattle just has to wait them out. If BM doesn’t sign an offer sheet with another team by April 15 his only choice is to go back to Denver. Then Denver can keep him or shop him around in a trade. At that time they may be willing to listen to a REASONABLE offer and not continue to demand a 1st rounder that they obviously are not going to get.

And the video of Okung at the combine was impressive. Love to see him fall to us.
× Flag comment
I too appreciate that perspective on Marshall. However, how does one reconcile the “mentoring” with the eleven 911 calls to his home, or his childish and pouty behavior in camp last season? There is a reason no one has signed the tender.
× Flag comment
Some people can talk a good game and then go behind the scenes and pull the same crap. I have no interest in Brandon Marshall the person, but that damn Brandon Marshall the football player sure would be nice to have. If you could put the brain of Wes Welker or Larry Fitzgerald into the body of Brandon Marshall… I would trade a #1 pick for Marshall in a heartbeat.

Why does every piece on this blog begin with “joe blow, from xyz paper reports…” This used to be the INSIDER. We used to get stuff here that we couldn’t get anywhere else. Now it’s just a regurgitation of the work being done everywhere else. Everything we’ve read about any move the Seahawks have made or have contemplated making has come from an article written by the local newspaper of the team they’ve tried to make the move with. What are you guys doing?! I can get that stuff on my twitter account. Can we PLEASE get some information on what’s going on with the Seahawks that comes from a source closer to home than the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Either that, or in the name of truth in advertising change the name of this Blog to “The Seahawks Outsider”.

Duke, Bobby – from the previous thread – I still don’t understand why Whitehurst would even come to Seattle if he wasn’t going to compete for the job this year on even terms?
We know for a certainty that Whisenhunt wants competition and will give the starting QB to the best player. Whitehurst can earn a ton of money starting for Arizona in that offense.
So you guys think he will come here to be an outright backup this year in a terrible offense rather than starting for the Cards??
× Flag comment
pabuwal – I have said most of that before, too. If you’re Whitehurst, you’d choose the Cardinals.
But just to play the fence:
One negative about the Cardinal situation is that if he loses the QB job to Leinert, he’s going to be a back-up for a very long time. But if he chooses the Seahawks, and Matt starts off bad in ’10, it’ll be his job. Most likely, it’ll be his job in ’11 or probably ’12 at the latest.
The Cards are notoriously cheap. Players generally say bad things about the Bidwell’s. They have for decades. But with Paul Allen, there are generally positive things to say about the organization. Personally, I would rather work in a more credible environment.
And even though fans of both teams aren’t very good outside of their areas (as evidenced by the travel of supposed Seahawk/Cardinal fans on a national scale especially with respect to the Super Bowl) the 12th Man is a heck of a lot better to play in front of then the old population of AZ where many people retire to, but hold an allegiance of being a fan of the team where they came from. If you’re a football player, you’d want to play in front of a loud and crazy crowd, not like a group who came to watch a play and sit on their hands and clap every once in awhile.
× Flag comment
I never implied that he would want to come here. Only that if they brought him in, it would be with an eye to the future. At this point, I couldn’t care less what he wants, please sign with the Cards.
× Flag comment
Well, in the scenario you guys are presenting, the Seahawks are “wasting” a lot of time on an offer that won’t even be close to the Cardinals offer.
× Flag comment
Paul Allen has money. The Bidwell’s are cheap. We all have a price. I don’t know what the offers are… but perhaps the Seahawks are offering more lute.
× Flag comment
How about this for an idea… Maybe one of our “Insiders” could call the front office and try to get us some details on the offer. Then we would know.
× Flag comment
Sounds like the Denver Post guy is doing some PR for the Broncos to help move an obvious problem for them.
Regardless, there is a big price to pay for him on all fronts (draft pick(s), money, potential again to be a disruption). The question is whether this is what the Hawks NEED at this time in their turning around this franchise at THIS time.
I would rather see him go to another team, if that team is willing to match or come close to matching Denvers price (first round pick). That is just far to high of a valuable pick for such a risky player. IF he can be obtained for a much lower round choice then MAYBE you consider it. It is, of course, up to the “powers that be” to decide how they want to spend their money or what risk they are willing to take on him. But with this draft, the picks are to important and should bring some good to great value (players) to give up one on a known risk.
I am not “hating” on Marshall, the point is his risk/cost vs possible reward. His stats are known, but so is everything else attached with obtaining him.
× Flag comment
I really think the Seahaks are looking for a BODY rather than a QB. I’m sure we will get one in the draft, whichever round, and we already have Teel. I think we want another name to toss into the mix. Either to see who performs better in camps/preseason, and cut the odd man out……OR…….to use in trade. Maybe a draft day trade.
I can understand wanting a guy who has started and made a Pro Bowl as your back-up…but not your long-term answer. Now, a guy who has less starts than my mentally challenged cat (Whitehurst) isn’t a backup…not right away. Nice college stats and all, but we all know what that means in the NFL.
I just don’t see anyone, especially Petey, saying that Whitehurst or Anderson will be our future franchise guy…..PLEASE MAKE ME RIGHT MR. CARROL.

“nice piece on BM. I watched one of his interviews at the Pro-bowl a season ago….since then I’ve wondered how he gets such a bad rap”
Take a look at his rap sheet, which includes two domestic violence arrests, and you’ll have your answer. jc50 said the Denver Post piece was PR to help the team get some sucker to take this creep off their hands. I concur, this guy has no redeeming virtues. Hasn’t there been enough Rae Carruth’s, Lawrence Phillips’ and Michael Vick’s that we still can’t recognize one when we see one?
jjsnix, do you go to other sources for news or do you just rely on one? I for one appreciate seeing the the perspectives of others, and I go to numerous sources for news instead of relying on just one. Having some links posted here saves time doing that as well the opportunity to see some other perspectives. You talk like that’s all that’s done here, it isn’t.
I still don’t understand the actions, and non-actions, of the new regime. Why was Seneca Wallace traded for a 7th, possible 6th round choice NEXT year (when there may well be a lockout)? That’s a fire sale. I’m not saying we could have gotten a 3rd round, but he was at least worth holding out for a 4th. Cleveland has 3 picks in the 5th round this year, we could have held out for one of those. We did we not pursue Rex Hadnot or Ryan Lilja, but we’re interested in 32 year old Ben Hamilton? He’d be an improvement over any guard on the roster right now, but Hadnot and Lilja are better. Why did we sign a washed up tight end who can’t block and is a marginal receiver and who does not improve this team in any significant way? http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest/post/_/id/15498/baker-bates-were-together-with-jets
And why in the name of all that’s holy are we even discussing, let alone thinking about, throwing away a draft pick on a 3rd string QB who has never taken a snap in the NFL. Are they thinking that he’s going to be another Ryan Grant, a 3rd stringer who’s going to take us to the promised land? Based on what?
× Flag comment
The Seahawks need to find a QB who can take the snap, drop back 3-5-7 steps, make his reads and get rid of the ball, all in 1.8 seconds. He also needs to be able to take a ton of hits and not get injured. Or they could upgrade the O line.
× Flag comment
nighthawk,
The 49rs just traded Shaun Hill to the Lions for a 7th rounder in 2011. Since Shaun Hill WAS their starter last season until he lost his job to Smith I guess that means a 2011 7th rounder is the going price for a backup QB that isn’t in the team’s plans.
Maybe this current FO knows more about the market than we do?
× Flag comment
One thing we know for a fact is that Seneca was not a franchise type of QB. We don’t know that about Whitehurst. We can speculate, but none of us can say for sure.

aahhh….Nighthawk. He just explained to the kids in that article about his background. Some people do grow up. The domestic calls, we don’t really know what goes on inside someone’s house just because someone call the cops. I think of Chris Henry’s fiance (ex) – she came across as a nightmare and probably had a hand in his actual death. He doens’t come across as a Pac-man idiot type….that’s what I was trying to put across.

and Brady just got moved to Denver for Peyton Hillis and some picks….good move by Holmgren, Hillis has looked like the best RB option outside Moreno for a couple years there.
× Flag comment
I understand the reasons they traded Wallace and wanted to be rid of him now and am not surprised. But to nighthawk’s point; they likely would get a 7th and perhaps a 6th round compensatory pick should they let him walk after next season anyway and likelihood we wouldn’t be in the market for Whitehurst.

Yes, Quinn is indeed now a Bronco.
http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Brady-Quinn-traded-to-Broncos.html
× Flag comment
Yes,
Quinn for FB Hillis, a 6th rounder in 2011 and a conditional pick in 2012.
Again, it goes to show what Seattle got for Wallace isn’t entirely out of touch with what appears to be the going price for QB who are no longer wanted on their current teams.
× Flag comment
So 2011 7th round picks are the going rate for two proven back-ups and sometimes starters. Where does that place as a value for Whitehurst? San Diego’s tender of a 3rd rounder is definitely blue sky and big dreams. If Whitehurst is seen as some sort of option here by the FO, then how could they justify better than a future 7th or MAYBE 6th round pick?
Vichawkfan….. Where did you see the information about Brady Quinn being traded?

Nighthawk2:
My point is that all of the information on EVERY move that the Seahawks have made or have contemplated making since the beginning of free agency has been reported on by a source other than our local papers and “Insiders”. This leads me to believe that the writers of this blog have no access to Carrol or Schneider or anything that goes on at VMA. When the reporters from the Cleveland Plain Dealer and CSNPhilly.com amongst other sources know more about what’s going on with our team than our local reporters do something is wrong.
If you don’t believe me look back through the last 10 posts or so. How much access would you say our Insiders have to the decision makers on our Team. This blog has become a knitting circle. It’s gotten fat and lazy. Posting links to the works of other journalists is journalism.
× Flag comment
Holmgren has probably had about 4 hrs of sleep a night since FA started. The big show is certainly not shy about cleaning up. He’s probably hoping Berry falls to 7 now.
× Flag comment
I would tend to agree that the local press is lacking on insight to the Hawks. When John Clayton was around, he was always wired in to what was going on with the Hawks (and still often is). We can hope, at best, for now that it is because of a new FO and the rapport is just not there…at worst, they are just out of touch.
Regardless, I appreciate the posts made by all here…it promotes some new information, certainly a lot of opinions and…..even a few arguements. To me, it makes for a lot of interest and the passion of the “12th Man (or woman) is very evident in all.
× Flag comment
That’s a good point about Wallace leaving and we’d probably get a late round pick for him as compensation. However, they are in the process of working out a new CBA (although it sure as heck doesn’t feel like it) and there are no guarantees that teams will continue to be awarded “comp” picks.

That’s it for Quinn? A FB and a 6th round pick? For a guy picked in the first round a couple years back – I’m a little surprised. He must look terrible on film
I mean, is Whitehurst that much better of a prospect than Quinn, such that he’s worth a 3rd? Hard to know what to make of a QB we’ve never seen play.
Agree that patience is the way to play the Marshall signing – there’s really no gettting around that e desperately need both of those 1st round picks – I hope we get him, but sitting tight is the smart way to play this.

I can see 100% that our local media here in Washington, especially our fair Tacoma, have dropped the ball on breaking the Seahawks news. I’ve gotten the info on the couple things we have done from Glazer and Scheffffter on Twitter…actually, my wife had in a hand in that. She shoulder peeked me hard while writing this.
But in this age of digital media, it’s so easy to be the last one to the party. Also, as was pointed out earlier, we have a new Front Office. Even the coaches and staff that stayed on, or were kept on, are pretty new here. Our local guys (even you Mr. Eric D. Williams. I know it’s hard…but you gotta be harder) just need to be proactive. Make those connections. Spill the e-mails, IM’s, and Tweets out into the Seahawk and NFL world. Try and stay one step ahead of people from other states…which I always thought was weird. How in Steve Largent’s name do they get this stuff before you guys. You need to become what the others claim to be.

If you ask me, most of what is reported on football during this time of year hardly qualifies as news and will be long forgotten once training camp starts and the real news begins. I think Eric does a great job with this blog, and he knows what a ‘slow news day’ means.

To have a place to get news, get answers, get laughs and so forth is GREAT. I just imagine how nice it would be to have all that AND be one of the first to get the info. And rub it into other peoples faces.

Did anyone notice that Lombardi “Heard Jets might be thinking about making a play for Marshall? Earlier he was the one who said that Denver would not negotiate the requirement for a one.
Jets are in a better position to acquire him with giving up a one. Hawks needs are too great to take a chance on giving up their draft picks for BM and his baggage. If it was a second round pick being given up. I’d say do it.
× Flag comment
I’m not saying I’d trade the #14 for BM… but just trying to make a point about what morons the Broncos are being…
The Broncos (just posturing, we know) have said they will only accept a #1 as compensation. And in relation to the Seahawks, that #1 must be the #6 pick (which we own).
But if they Jets come flying in (no pun intended) and offer their #1… it’s actually #29. And they can sign BM on the spot.
How in the heck can the Broncos rather have the #29 overall pick over our lesser of two #1 picks (which is at #14). Seems rather stupid, to me.

Maybe this current FO knows more about the market than we do?”
Maybe. Shaun Hill turned 30 years old in January, was an undrafted free agent who sat on the bench for 4 years in Minnesota appearing in 1 game and throwing 2 passes in those 4 years before signing with SF as an UFA in 06. He is strictly a pocket passer quarterback, who had 16 starts with SF and played in 18 games, all in the last 3 years. He had 23 TD’s and 11 INT’s with 14 fumbles (5 lost) and was sacked 47 times and has a QB rating of 87.3. Seneca Wallace turns 30 the first week of August, was a 4th round draft pick, played with Seattle his whole career and all but 1 season under Mike Holmgren, who can be a receiver, run a Wildcat and run reverses and probably return punts. He started 14 games and appeared in 48, has 25 TD’s and 14 INT’s with 17 fumbles (9 lost) and a QB rating of 83.1 playing behind a guy who’s been a Pro Bowl player. Similar stats but Wallace’s versatility makes him a far more valuable player than Shaun Hill. The 49ers were also in a position of trade low or get nothing because they’d just signed David Carr and weren’t going to release Nate Davis. Seattle wasn’t in that position. Brady Quinn was also traded for Peyton Hillis and a bag of chips.

Random dittohead blather…
I love this blog. I come here first for Seahawks news. I appreciate that they are willing to point to other news sources — if they only posted their own stuff, there would be screams about lack of content and lack of freshness. There are two teams, two players, two agents involved in most negotiations. That means there are LOTS of ways something can leak, and not involve a leak from our team to one of the local media. Also, I think the Trib probably recognizes that if they start publishing inside information on their blog, which they got themselves from the Seahawks, that they’ll lose access. Pay attention to the national guys, they often couch things and make it clear it’s their own suppositions, or things they’ve heard, as opposed to inside information. No one wants to be the guy fired for having loose lips.
I’m very happy with what the Seahawks have done so far in free agency. It’s easy to overpay and make a big splash, but we don’t need that. We’re not just a couple of marquee players away from making a run. We need to make sure everyone we acquire is someone we can really use long term.
I think that leads right into the QB and WR discussions. Not only are they asking a lot for Marshall, but decent quality WR are easy to come by, and you’d be a real idiot to pay a lot for a higher caliber WR. (Anyone else remember the Galloway trade to Dallas?) On the other hand, QBs with good pedigrees, good mechanics, intelligence and maturity, and a body that can stand up to the NFL? They don’t come along all that often.
I think it’s great that this group is carefully doing their diligence and feeling out what is there, what it costs, and developing opinions on it, without getting hasty and pulling the trigger. Mike Holmgren is totally going overboard and when some of his FA choices don’t pan out, people will ask for his head…
× Flag comment
With every move Holmgren makes he puts the Browns behind by a year. He always was notorious for over-paying for players. I am so glad that the Hawks did not make that president thing happen, even though the fans were screaming for it. Once again emotional fans caught up in the BUSINESS of football.

I’m not saying that there is anything wrong with taking advantage of having so many sources out there reporting on the NFL in general, and/or the Seahawks in specific. If some other source picks up a tidbit that our local guys missed out on or has a perspective that we aren’t getting locally that’s great.
My consternation is with the fact that it doesn’t seem as though there is ANY reporting issuing from the fine gentlemen on this blog that call themselves Insiders. Whether that is due to a lack of access to the decision makers at Seahawks HQ or just a willingness to sit back and ride the coattails of other publications I don’t know. But it is a fact.
Media outlets create perception and influence opinion. Paul Allen is the richest owner in the NFL yet he owns the team deemed my most NFL fans as the least significant ( Bob Glauber had a great tweet to that effect this morning). Cortez Kennedy was arguably the greatest Defensive Lineman of his era but can’t get a sniff of the hall of fame.
If you don’t think that our anemic media outlets in this town don’t play a role in those issues you may have been hanging out with Leroy Hill a bit too often.
I think it’s great that some of the contributors to this site get to live out their childhood fantasies of becoming sports writers. But can we make a bit of an effort to make this site a little more true to its name?
My aim is not to berate this blog, it is to ask them to become more relevant! And, hopefully in the process help to make the team that I cheer for more relevant.

A Proud Member of the Seahawks Knitting Circle

I know we could use a bigger, more physical receiver…I just hope that Ruvell has gotten a little quicker, a little sharper. He is still pretty green. He’s only got 4 years under his belt, and I’m sure he’ll be great as a Blocking WR / Special Teamer.
He’s got the size and ability to be a good, if not amazing WR. Let’s see how our new staff is with development.
BTW- It’s been soooo quiet in ‘Hawks FA. I wonder what we’re planning…Mr. Carrol has that sneaky vibe. What’s he got brewing?

The reason why the Hawks are quiet on the FA scene is because Schneider doesn’t believe in them. At least that’s what he said when they hired him, and Green Bay’s current roster reflects that.

I have two words for you: Frank Hughes because that’s who your post brought to mind.
During the football season, combine, mini camps, draft, and training camp, Eric and Ryan do a pretty good job of providing insider information because they do have media access during those times.
During the offseason, the trib keeps them busy with other stuff, and they have little access to the powers that be in Kirkland. It’s frustrating for those of us who follow the Seahawks all year, but that’s just how it is.
