Looks like QB Seneca Wallace will be reunited with his former coach Mike Holmgren, now the man in charge for the Cleveland Browns.
First reported by ESPN, and later confirmed by the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Browns have traded with the Seahawks for Wallace. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed. I’ll have more later.
Update: The Seahawks also have confirmed the trade. Seattle traded Wallace for an undisclosed draft pick in 2011, according to a press release the team just sent out. Here’s a quote from general manager John Schneider.
“This will give Seneca a chance for a fresh start,” Schneider said. “The Browns front office’s familiarity with his abilities will give him an opportunity to compete for playing time. We wish him nothing but the best.”
This confirms the Derek Anderson-to-be-released rumors, I would think.

And even better, the Hasselbeck to Cleveland nonsense that’s been thrown up all over the internet for 2 months, can be put to rest once and for all.
× Flag comment
Great move…even if it’s only a 7th round pick.
× Flag comment
I hope it was a pick in this year’s draft and not next year’s as was reported.
× Flag comment
I hope it was a pick in this years draft and not next years as reported
× Flag comment
Good luck to Seneca, I thought he gave his all to the team while he was here.
I’m trying to figure out what the new regime is looking for in a QB. I haven’t really gotten any insight as to what they prize, whereas it’s pretty well known what Holmgren likes to see. Does Teel fit the mold?
× Flag comment
Maybe we can check him out? Browns can keep their ND Queen. It will be great to swap QBs plus get a pick.
× Flag comment
I would actually argue that this strengthens the case for drafting a QB early, this year.
× Flag comment
Wow – i guess he starts there next year? Yes? Good for him – I always thought him a but underrated – not that I’m bummed they traded him.
Also makes you think they’re for certain going to draft a QB next month – not saying 1st round, but who knows.
× Flag comment
This is a good trade and makes sense. I like it. Even if it’s for a ’11 pick, that’s okay. Seneca only had 1 year left on his contract and would have wanted to go somewhere else anyways (where he could compete for PT).
× Flag comment
As I’ve said before, I’d like to draft 2 mid-round QBs next month. This is where trading down a time or two will come in handy to gather (Gaither on the mind) extra picks so actually taking a couple QBs will be more realistic. I’d like those QBs to not have any pressure on them and for Matt not to feel too threatened in the immediate future either (provided he plays better with a better supporting cast around him, which he will).
× Flag comment
Not sure that I agree that we are more likely to draft a QB because Wallace is gone. I think that we are more likely to sign a veteran now as a backup. Our QB draft decision will depend on who is available. Next years crop looks to be a little deeper so we could afford to wait as long as we had a decent backup. No way that we are going to draft high enough to get Locker though.
× Flag comment
lost sheep to shepard, come in shepard….Colt McCoy at 40…..make in so PC
× Flag comment
If this is a double post sorry. With the trading of Wallace we are more likely to try to pick up a veteran for a backup. Next years QB crop is said to be deeper than this years. We can afford to wait if we have a decent backup. No way we will be able to get Locker as we won’t draft that high.

wow we got clevelands 1st rnd pick this year and 3rd next year

What RADEoN. Where did you hear that

Well this sucks. We just got rid of our most productive QB over the last two years and instead kept a guy who has happy feet, a ruined back, is old, and is as bad of a decision maker as Seneca, but makes way way way more cash. Nice move…… or not.

klm – that’s simple. His surrounding talent diminished. Kind of like Matt.
And if Holmgren gave up a 1 and a 3 he will be fired tomorrow (he didn’t and won’t).

I hope PC knows what the F he’s doing (I don’t happen to think he does) & I hope since the pick is 2011 it’s a high one.

Stupid post…1st and 3rd for Wallace. man the gullibility here is high. Must be a month before the draft.

Nonsense about holmy giving up a 1st and a 3rd. (maan–sure would be sweet though, quit playing with my emotions now!!)
Radeon-give us a link to the bogus site you read this info from. just curious.

Maybe we can trade our back-up long snapper to someone for 10 draft picks in the next few years. LOL.
× Flag comment
WOW, has anyone here lost their sense for humor?
RADEoN is just yanking your chain. I love it.
× Flag comment

× Flag comment
It is a good trade. Anyone have any info on what the draft pick was? When will it be disclosed? Regardless, I am happy that we got anything for him. I got really tired of watching him run out of bounds to lose 8 yards when he could have thrown it away for a zero loss. Why does everyone assume that Teel is not an option? I think there is a real chance that he IS the quarterback of the future. He did great in pre-season.
× Flag comment
I see a John David Booty signing in the near future.
Seneca Wallace is (was) my favorite seahawk (He was my second favorite until Alexander was released). I’m kind of sad to see him go but I am excited for his opportunity in Cleveland. If there is a competition between him and Quinn, I think Seneca will win easy, if only because of his knowledge of the system not to mention that he’s a much better player.
× Flag comment
Way to go off of reputation only Pete, he could have helped us a lot… I don’t think this was a good trade because Seneca was a weapon… in another new offense I don’t think he was going to be a good QB, but he was our most athletic player and could have finally been allowed to show it. We especially could have kept him on the team as a 3rd WR and punt returner. Thankfully, we will never look bad over this since Holmgren will continue to refuse to let Seneca play WR or return punts.
× Flag comment
I assume Teel is not an option because this new regime will want to bring in their own QB of the future, for good or ill.
× Flag comment
This definitely tips the Hawks’ plans for the draft.
Considering Carroll has known Jimmy Clausen’s family for nearly a decade and has watched him since ninth grade, I would suspect that he is headed this way if he falls to No. 14. If that doesn’t happen, Tim Tebow will be a Seahawk and you’ll have to add another veteran backup.
I think this all but guarantees that Clausen’ s headed our way though, Brandon Marshall be damned.
× Flag comment
“Is RADEoN and redeon the same person?” – Yes, they are me too. Lol.
I don’t think Teel can be ruled out just yet. While I think it’s very likely they select a QB early, I don’t think this necessarily is a sign they only want someone they drafted. Schneider’s history of drafting QBs often would indicate, to me anyway, that he is open to giving Teel a genuine look, if only for a back up role.
× Flag comment
Jimmy Clausen or Tim Tebow.
One or the other will be a Seahawk in 2010.
My money’s on Clausen considering the history.
” Teel who?” — Pete Carroll
× Flag comment
I’m going to miss that patented run out of bounds for a 7 yard loss instead of throwing the ball away play Seneca perfected last year. (sarcasm…..)
× Flag comment
A solid trade…. Seneca really has no future with us, if Hass is gone, we wouldn’t win anyway…. That’s already been clearly proven…. Why not develop a backup/future…. Again, agree with Bobby, that will not be Teel…. If Teel was the real deal for us, we would have something positive from our sports writers by now….. right sports writers ( this isn’t politics ) ? Clearly, someone would have pulled the trigger on a positive Teel article by now… somewhere…. It isn’t there…. Teel is not the future ….. Yup, we’re drafting a QB…. or two…. I can’t see us going after any other backups….
× Flag comment
Seneca ran out of bounds like twice in the past two years when nothing was there, and guys NEVER let it drop. Yet Matt threw INT’s like he wasn’t sure what color jersey he was wearing and all we hear is crickets. Amazing.
Seneca was the most overly hammered player on this team. The guy worked his butt off and got nothing but poor play calling and limited opportunity. When he was put in awful situations it wasn’t Knapps fault or the O-line’s fault, it was all Seneca and his “poor decision making.” Yet when Matt played like a horse’s butt for the majority of the last 2 years there is ALWAYS somebody else to blame. How convenient. I am starting to wonder what it takes to be given a ton of leeway around here. Apparently it has something to do with being a good interview apparently. Because that’s about the only advantage Matt had on Seneca. Seneca played with the worst surrounding talent in league history two years ago and put up superior numbers to Matt “it’s all the line’s fault and/or Knapp’s fault” Hasselbeck.

On the “Solid Trade” comment on Seneca, I meant we will not go after any free agent backup QB’s…

Eric,
Any news on the Benjamin Watson visit?

We’re either drafting a QB in round 1 this year or next year. Interested to see how all of this works out.
× Flag comment
sharkhawk,
I can go back to 5 times last year in the Senecat formation alone that Wallace ran out of bounds instead of throwing the ball away. I’d say that’s a few more than 2 times in the last 2 years.
Wallace is too short to be a starting QB in the NFL. Only Doug Flutie is shorter than Wallace.
× Flag comment
“Great move…even if it’s only a 7th round pick.”
How exactly is that? We trade away our experienced backup, who was a 4th round pick, for some nebulous 2011 pick (presuming there’s even going to be a 2011 season and not a lockout), and it’s OK, even if it’s a 7th round pick? No, this is not OK. I don’t mind the trade of Wallace, but the compensation is total b.s. I feel we pretty much traded something for nothing.
× Flag comment
“Wallace is too short to be a starting QB in the NFL. Only Doug Flutie is shorter than Wallace.”
Some guy named Brees is a whole inch taller than Wallace is.
× Flag comment
“solid trade” – what? We got nothing that we know of so far and it is a solid trade?
Shark is 100% right, Wallace got blamed for playing poorly, Hasselbeck was given excuses. They played the same position with the same supporting cast/play calling. When Holmgren was here, Wallace was considered the best back-up QB in the NFC West and one of the best backups in the NFL (check Mike Sando, Eric Williams, and evey person in this blog hating on him now, from 2006-2008). He made mistakes, sure – but of course Hass never did… so we love him and instead hate on Wallace. BTW, what’s a better “decision”: You choose:
1.
A) Lose 5 yards by running out of bounds
B) Shotput style pass to A.J. Hawk 3 yards away in desperation.
2.
A) Lose 3 yards running a foiled end-around pass play by going out of bounds
B) Pitch it backwards to Shaun Alexander while he is BLOCKING to avoid a sack.
He probably did what the coach asked him to do, avoid the game changing mistake… it was his best attribute under Holmgren. I expect he will do well in Cleveland, and he probably wouldn’t have been given a fair shake here anyway. So, it is what it is… another coach/GM basing a decision on his size and a perception of what his limits are.
To Seneca Wallace I say good luck – if you come back here as a starter for Cleveland, I hope you make us regret this day (and your D plays terrible and we win anyway).
× Flag comment
wow Chuck, five times in 2 years he made the decision to run out of bounds rather than make an errant throw on the run? What a horrible QB. I believe I saw Matt throw it to a guy wearing the wrong jersey five times in ONE GAME. That was the line’s fault though right? A “top ten QB” is given nothing but a free pass, even when he’s played terribly for years.
Seneca is traded for conditional picks because he apparently ran out of bounds five times. I sure wish Matt had chosen to run out of bounds five times. We’d probably have an extra 2 wins over the past couple of years.

On a different note; Zane Beadles impressed at his pro day. If you all remember, this is one of the players Eric featured during his trip to the combine a couple weeks back.

I’m fairly certain the plays where Wallace ran out of bounds were designed running plays so he had no other choice.
SharkHawk – I’ve learned not to criticize Hasselbeck around here. You get the same reaction as a 49ers fan criticizing Montana. He can get ample protection, have a decent running game and throw 5 turnovers (at GB, vs TB) and it’s still not his fault. He lets his play speak for himself – no reason to do it for him.
Guys like Wallace and Alexander have always been fair game for undue criticism around here – no matter how they outperform other, more beloved players. It’s sad to say Wallace has been the better QB the past 2 years. Holmgren knew what he was doing in this trade.

On a different note: OT Zane Beadles, who Eric profiled during his trip to the combine a couple weeks ago, apparently look very good at his pro day.

Someone the Hawks would look at in later rounds, especially with his experience in ZBS at Utah.

sharkhawk,
I actually like Seneca as a backup. I just said he’s not now nor will he ever be a consistant starter in the NFL. He’d be perfect for the CFL. And I do think that Hass even at this stage of his career is twice the QB Seneca will ever be.
× Flag comment
The 2011 pick is probably conditional. Clev has several fifth round pick in this years draft. Wish Seattle had gotten one in addition to the 2011 pick.

sharkhawk,
I like Wallace. It’s just he’s not the QB of the future for Seattle and he’s a FA next season. This is the time to trade him if Seattle wants to get anything for him.
He doesn’t have a future here.
× Flag comment
That’s exactly right. It doesn’t help any that he regressed horribly last season. This is the best possible situation for all involved.
× Flag comment
Somehow, someway we all know the new regime is going to want to bring in a QB of their own (maybe two).
If we dump Matt, people are going to be up in arms because of the wealth of knowledge he has in helping out a young QB.
If we dump Wallace, some of the people here are obviously up in arms as evidenced by some of these posts.
If we dump Teel, some people are going to be up in arms about him being young and not given a fair shake.
If we kept these three and drafted a rookie, people would be up in arms about keeping 4 QBs. Damned if you do. Damned if you don’t.
Myself, this was a good trade. Seneca is getting older and he’s in the last year of his contract. Instead of losing him for nothing, we got a future pick (which rebuilding teams want/need). We already have 1 QB who can help mentor a new guy (with more expeience than Wallace).

SL2- Ira Swenson is the TNT’s web supervisor and I doubt he would like to be referred to as an “ex-Taliban educated “warrior”". But leave it to SL2 to insult and attack without provocation, it’s what he has been doing to me for weeks. In any case, there is an issue with their spam filter and comments are being recognized as such so he has to go through them all, one at a time, and post them. It’s a pain in the ass, I’m sure, but they’re working on it.

Later Seneca, good luck in Cleveland……
I’m not going to miss him and the whole “the Hawks aren’t using him right… or enough” or “we need to find a way to get him on the field”. Good grief!! Thank goodness he’s gone, you can’t keep paying a guy top back up money if you don’t think he can step in and be a #1 QB if injury were to take Matt out again. Plus new system and I’ve read things about Seneca’s slow learning curve, so I really don’t think him being here best suits us or him.

Keep any eye on Utah’s safety, Robert Johsnon. I think he is exactly what Carroll would want in a safety, and at a much better price tag.

SW was an excellent backup. Wish nothing but the best for him. Curious, Mangini using some form of the WCO? I know Favre adapted without a full training camp.

SW served us well as our backup. Wish him only the best in Cleveland. Curious, Mangini runs the WCO? I know Favre with a shortened training camp did well. Is it only the language of the playbook being the major difference? Favre mentioned numbers were used in place of names.
Carroll planning to trade the 6 and 11 for Bradford? Giving SW up so easily means he plans on drafting a QB. Maybe Tebow with the 2-40 but that seems high. McCoy? None of the veterans would of had the value of SW. Perplexing. Why not a player trade of Quinn or Anderson? Kolb must not be on the market, Holmgren taking SW.

No, Snydro and I are not brothers. We share the same last name but are not related, nor have we ever met. This is where SL2s confusion stems. I’m presuming Snydro posted some stuff somewhere else and SL2 got it in his head that we were the same person, posting under multiple names. It simply isn’t true. There is a part of me that admires his loyalty to TNT, but I’m as dedicated to this blog as anyone and have been for a very long time.
