According to Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren might have interest in another Seattle Seahawks quarterback not named Matt Hasselebeck – Seneca Wallace.
If Holmgren were to seek Wallace in a potential trade I’m sure the Seahawks would be willing to listen. Holmgren always showed confidence in Wallace and took time to groom the athletic thrower into a quality back-up.
Wallace heads into the final year of his contract this season, and the Seahawks could be looking to free up a spot to develop a No. 2 quarterback behind Hasselbeck.
Here’s my story today on the Seahawks pursuit of Denver restricted free agent receiver Brandon Marshall.
According to this report from Scout.com, Green Bay free agent quarterback Aaron Kampman traveled to Jacksonville and will meet with the Jaguars today. The Seahawks could have interest in Kampman as a potential upgrade at defensive end.
Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports that San Francisco free agent receiver Arnaz Battle is headed to Pittsburgh, and his scheduled trip to Seattle has been put on hold.
Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic notes the Cardinals appear to have taken a step back, losing starting free safety Antrel Rolle, starting linebacker Karlos Dansby and wide receiver Anquan Boldin on the first full day of free agency.
Doug Farrar of Yahoo Sports NFL blog Shutdown Corner says the Seahawks could be on their way to being one of this year’s free agent loser, after losing Nate Burleson and now looking to spend what he believes is too much money on receiver Brandon Marshall.
Agree with Farrar, 100%. In any case, I can’t see any way Seattle re-signs Wallace so if they are able to get something for him, do it. It’s hard to predict what the market for Wallace might bring, but a 4th doesn’t seem unreasonable.

Agree, trade Wallace for whatever we can get while he still has value. He is not our future QB.

If we could get a 5th rounder for him, we could use that pick on a developmental QB. I mentioned a few days ago that I’d be happy with taking two mid-round QBs in the draft. We’d be grooming them for the future, there would still be competition for each of them on a weekly basis, as each would want to be the guy of the future, and they wouldn’t be an early pick who would make too much money to sit on the bench and there would be no pressure to get rid of Hasselbeck, if he gets talent around him and plays at a higher level this upcoming season.
If there’s a gray area on Teel, it’s that this regime didn’t draft him. I’m sure the new guys want to be responsible for getting “their” QB of the future (for good or ill).

Maybe Ruskell can talk the Bears into giving up a 7th round pick next year for Teel (if Mr. Happy and the Duke Boy want to bring in their own guy). I doubt it, but you never know. I have no idea what the Bears have after Cutler.

For Wallace go for a 3rd.We can get a W/R in the draft. There is a kid out of BYU he’e a TE ,But could play W/R he has great hands Pinta I believe is his name.Pass on Marshall way to muchfor him.unless they will take a 7th round for him.

Getting a 4th round pick for Wallace may be a bit optimistic, but there is no doubt that getting any pick or even a servicable back-up player would be better than nothing. Given the fact that the Seahawks are not going to be playoff bound this year, a developing QB makes sense and puts more focus on his preperation. I just only hope that if Wallace can be moved that the Hawks do not then waste a first round pick on a QB when so many other needs are more pressing.
Side note: Giving up ANY first round pick for Marshall would be a waste also. What is the upside, this year, of bring in Marshall as a proven trouble-maker and bad teamate? A high draft pick (or picks), high salary and high maintenence player is an excessive cost with little to no upside for this team at this stage of its needs. Has the last few seasons not clearly shown how deficient the Hawks are on both sides of the line? Good to great teams are built on the lines, for which the Hawks do not have. “Impact” players have no impact when there is no line…offense or defense.

let’s consider Marshall for a second – Bates and our QB coach (Denver’s WR coach) know him much better than all us idiots do. If they think he’s worth it, why the hell shouldn’t all of us. I suppose watching TJ getting doubled and Butler cutting through the middle excites us all. This isn’t Ruskell’s team anymore – get over the kumbaya in the locker room.

I think that B. Marshall is simply too talented to not consider. His ability to run after the catch is like that of a running back. 6’4″ 230 pounds and fast…we’ve never had anything like him. They may not be the best (they may be), but I think Marshall and Housh would give us the toughest WR tandem by far.
I also think that we should consider T. Jones. Just recently, it used to be that you had to have 2 decent running backs. Now (in looking at what Dallas has done), I don’t think it hurts to have three. Plus, if there is anyone that could push Julius it’d be his brother. I know that he’s another 30 plus RB, but he’s a workout warrior and was 3rd in the league in rushing.
I’d also like to see the names Ryan Clark and Darren Sharper linked to our needs at safety. One intimidates with their hard hitting and the other is a ballhawk, almost surefire HOFer.
Trade Wallace. Sign Delhomme to back up and now you don’t have to worry about having to take a QB with your high picks. Develop Teel…I think he has moxy.
This Free Agency period feels a lot different than years past. I think you have to strike early and often. The Cardinals have been hurt by Warner’s retirement and their cupboards are bare (Dansby, Rolle, Boldin…who’s next?).
In the past, I would have been vehemently against the idea of Brandon Marshall coming to my beloved Hawks and ruining the chemistry. Right now, there is no chemistry or it’s under development. A change of scenery to one of the premier facilities in the NFL might not be that bad for the ‘beast’ or ‘baby TO’.
Watch how he runs AFTER the catch and tell me you wouldn’t want him in Seahawk blue!
Go Hawks!

Marshell’s a 100 catch per year guy. TJ was a 90 catch per year guy….until he got here.
I’m not against signing BM, but the Seahawks HAVE to improve the OL or it will all be in vain.
GO HAWKS!!!

Seneca Wallace for Brady Quinn.

I just want to stop this morning and celebrate the following:
Kurt Warner, Anquan Boldin, and Karlos Dansby, all GONE from Phoenix! Stuck with Leinart at QB, Wisenhunt will be trying to turn the Cardinals into more of a run-first team for 2010. Good luck with that. The Seahawks are looking more competitive in the NFC West already.

Dog, remember that TJ was a 90-catch a year guy when he was the #2 WR to Ochocinco! He can be a 90-catch a year guy again once he is the #2 WR to his 100-catch-a-year buddy Brandon Marshall! It could be a perfect match.

I don’t understand what happened to SW last season, especially in the 2nd half vs SF and vs CHI. It seemed like he was just coming around pretty good to Holmgren’s system in ’08, staying in the pocket and making his reads and throwing accurately when he spelled Matt. In fact, most everybody agreed that he outperformed Matt in ’08. Not great, but an 87 NFL QB rating compared to a 59.4 for Matt.
But then ’09 came and the switch to Knapp’s “run-first” offense, which I’d thought should have fit SW better, instead made him look like he often didn’t know what to do out there, like he couldn’t make up his mind between staying in the pocket and jack-rabbiting like he did in college. Then to carry the ball outta bounds with you rather than chuck it away … he gets an unassisted sack! (He sacked himself twice last season – his only sacks.) Does anybody know the rule – if you’re outside the tackles can you throw the ball away without being called for grounding? Can’t you throw it into the 30th row of the stands as long as the ball’s going forward? But SW did a good job vs IND, really. His passing was good when he wasn’t pressured (104 NFL QB rating)
Jon Gruden believes, against prevailing notion that NFL defenses are just too fast, that the spread offense can be ported over to the NFL if coaches would take the time to learn how to do it properly. And it kinda is used now inna 3rd cousin kinda way, though nobody’d call it that. Anyway, SW is a useful offensive weapon that Holmgren was just starting to exploit in SEA, like Weaver was. Now, maybe J Bates and PC don’t have the time to spend trying to really figure SW out and how to get the most out of him? Maybe it would be easier for the coaches to get the most out of a 4th round draftpick? I wouldn’t throw SW under the bus unless I’d really found out how athletic he is first, and if he hasn’t been put in positions to be the best he can be – yet.

Solid post Joreb.

Amen, Joreb. But I would not worry about missing out on any of this year’s FAs. They are all getting overpaid so far. I’d trade our #6 and #14 picks down for more picks and sign a slew of second round talent. And I’d trade whatever pick we need to trade to get Brandon Marshall.
No problem that the Seahawks may go slowly in trading for Marshall, AS LONG AS they don’t lose him. But I will not sleep well until his contract is signed. This is a rare opportunity to improve the offense in a single leap.

Stevos – Don’t forget Rolle. They are hemorrhaging players.

Duke, don’t worry about falling off your ledge. Brandon Marshall will catch you with his free hand on his way to the end zone.

The “cardiac cards” are “hemorrhaging players”… I love it.

I’m all for bringing in Marshall, just not for the firsts. And I am willing to look past the immaturity and dangerous behavior and allow him a clean slate here. I will admit, I do not like the idea of those kinds of people associated with the ‘Hawks. As Nighthawk put it, I don’t want choir boys, just good football players that aren’t head cases. And he has proven to be a head case all down the line. But, his talent and ability are worth a measured risk associated with him, but simply for for first round draft picks.
Stevo – back to back, Hey-O!

Well Marshall must be here and they haven’t pulled the trigger..YET!!
NFL .com says it’s more of a feelingout or informational meeting. Could be good news, maybe PC and Schnieder can use the fact Denver wants to dump this guy and work a treade deal instead of just signing away our 6th pick…Maybe the new BOSSES are cagey enough to get Marshall on very good terms and keep our picks. I am still hopeful

Mike Bell (Saints) is coming in for a visit next week. This is interesting. He would be the “physical presence” Carroll alluded to.

Hopefully, they will come to terms, but not sign a tender. The tender, if I understand, could lock us into giving up our first pick. But, if we come to terms, the deal can be more creative.
I think that’s how it works.

It’s looking like the 49′s in the NFC West. I wouldn’t have said this last week, but there’s a legit chance the Hawks could go 5-11 & still end up in 2nd place (for what little that’s worth).

“get over the kumbaya in the locker room”
Yeah, because we sure wouldn’t want an esprit de corps in the locker room. Division, dissention, “it’s all about me” and factions are much more conducive to winning than a a unified team is. T.O. and Shaun Alexander showed us that.
The Patriots won Super Bowls with no name receivers, and except for Dillon, no name RBs. How many did they win after they got Moss? Zero.
If Marshall could behave himself and not get arrested and suspended, fine. A criminal locker room cancer is the last thing we need.
I made my thoughts on Marshall clear in another thread. OFFENSIVE LINE is first and foremost the position that needs to be address and improved. Receiver is about, oh, 20th on that list, right after linebacker.
Sando seems to think along the same lines: http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest/post/_/id/15148/broncos-marshall-visiting-seahawks?prosaction=newpost&status=ok
If the Seahawks want to give up, maybe, a 2nd round for him, or a 2nd and Branch, fine. If they give up a 1st and ignore the o-line and LT again, I will personally lead the torch and rope brigade to VMAC or whatever they call that place run Carroll and Schneider out on a rail.
Too talented to ignore? How are Hasselbeck or Wallace or Teel or anyone else going to throw to him while flat on their back or in the hospital if we continually ignore the o-line to pick up the flavor of the month free agent and ignore o-line by pissing away 1st round draft picks for said “big name receivers”. Seems like we did that in 2006 and are partly in the mess we’re in because Ruskell pissed away our 1st round pick that could have been Ben Grubbs because he got a woody for Deion Branch. How did that one work out? “Oh, but Marshall is so much better!” He is? Was he a Super Bowl MVP? Branch at least had the virtue of never have been arrested or suspended. According to some poster, we have to have criminals on the roster to win. I disagree. The Patriots won 3 Super Bowls with no name receivers, and except for Dillon, no name receivers. How many have they won since Moss got there? We don’t need receivers, we need offensive line. If you just have to have this cretin, trade a 2nd round and Branch for him, but no 1st round picks.

I didn’t think Wallace was all that bad last season. Probably one of the better backups in the league IMHO. Though last season, he had me yelling a few times at the TV when he ran out of bounds 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage instead of throwing it away.
I’m all for players and picks though …
