Jason La ConFora of NFL.com is reporting that Baltimore Ravens director of player personnel Eric DeCosta has withdrawn his name for consideration in Seattle’s search for a new general manager.
With Philadelphia general manager Tom Heckert doing same reportedly taking a similar position with Cleveland, that leaves Packers director of football operations John Schneider and Giants director of college scouting Marc Ross as the two names still competing for the job.
With all the frantic changes and impulsiveness, who is surprised that no one wants to come near our hawks?
× Flag comment
It’s not the impulsiveness, it’s the appearance of a done deal with Carrol, who will undoubtedly come packaged with his own hand=picked GM

I am very excited about this. I have a really, really good feeling about this.

Here’s an interesting article from SI that contains some details that I haven’t heard yet:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/football/nfl/01/08/seahawks.carroll/
× Flag comment
I found this most interesting –
“That’s kind of polar opposite of what they’ve said they wanted,” one league source said. “They didn’t want another [Mike] Holmgren, or a football czar. They wanted someone to partner with Leiweke and not come in there and make wholesale changes. But I guess they were willing to re-draw their model once GM candidates started pulling out on them without even taking interviews.”
Part of me reads this as move as desperate. Part of me reads this as commitment to a man they believe in.
× Flag comment
Never thought Mora was sincere about the “Gee, I really wanted Mike Holmgren back” when he was part of Ruskell’s plan to shove Holmgren out the door. Maybe Allen’s people saw through that too. What I hope is that Carroll re-hires Jim Zorn as quarterback coach, the man is great at that position.
× Flag comment
“Part of me reads this as move as desperate. Part of me reads this as commitment to a man they believe in. ”
I take that comment from the league source with a grain of salt – as it smells a little like sour grapes – in that Seattle has pulled off a coup of sorts in prying Carroll away from a pretty sweet gig.
Good stuff in the article though – makes sense that if Baltimore likes DeCosta that they would make promises to him, once it got in the headlines that Seattle was interested in him. Now, why can’ t that happen to me at my job?
× Flag comment
The positives are that we won’t hear the “Ruskell screwed Holmgren over” or “Mora had no chance because of Ruskell’s failings as a GM” stuff that we’ve heard over and over. The buck will obviously stop with Carroll. There can be no finger pointing in that scenario. Well, lets get ready for this journey and hope for the best. I’m a bit bitter we didn’t get Shanahan, but it certainly could have been much worse. Time will tell…

So, all this developments prove what some of us said about Leiwekes :
“will have to join us , we will not join them” statement. He realized what he said was STUPID , and found another “genius” to bring here (b/c Carroll is desperate to escape from the NCAA’s axe). Quality GM candidates ( Heckert, DeCosta ) were not interested in having to deal with this idiot. I don’t understand why is Allen still siding with Leiweke…. ( pictures with a goat , maybe?) Hope we will have a coach that has some clue instead of Mora & Knapp combo.
I guess we won’t be drafting a QB this year; Carroll will trade for Booty.

“Well, lets get ready for this journey and hope for the best.”
Yep. I love when this board acts as a sort of group therapy. I know it’s been that for me after some particularly bad losses the last couple years.
At least our owner and front office was proactive in the face of this miserable season. Plenty of ownerships would have stayed with Mora, and some with Ruskell too. We may still have further to go down, but at least we’ve got fresh, and hopefully talented, eyes on the situation. Carroll better be good – he’s certainly being paid like it. Again though, I’m excited for Seahawks football.
× Flag comment
It will be interesting to see how many USC players he brings in. Hey, gets to spend a few more years with Lawrence Jackson!
× Flag comment
Ya know…most of us pretty much knew that Mora wasn’t going to cut it, so the writing was on the wall.
What I like about this is that we cut our losses now. Next, year would have been Mora’s 2nd obligatory year that “ever coach deserves”. Carroll is going to get at least two years, the first one being what would have been Mora’s last season.
At least we made the change now. We have no place to go but up and hopefully Carroll will be the one to take us there. His one year in NY is forgiven, just like Mora’s one year here will be one day when he gets another coaching gig.
Since then, Carroll has had great success with the Trojans…In ten years, you’d think he would reflect on what went wrong back then and return to the NFL a better coach. He won’t have to be that much better to get us back into the playoffs.
× Flag comment
Maybe this Pete Carrol hire is a good thing. Now I might be wrong but I’m betting Pete never got to pick his own draft pics while with New England. Maybe with his knowledge with recruiting high school players. Some he got at USC some he didn’t but he will have a better advantege in knowing hidden or not know players for the next 4 year. I bet if he gets full control he drafts very well. I think if Pete Carroll gets full control he will do well. Before he didn’t get to have the guys he wanted they were someone elses pics.

With rampant reports of the Seahawks in the process of hiring a new coach…a college one no less (gag)….it is no wonder that GM candidates are bowing out already. The Seahawks seem to be making it clear that the GM will not have the kind of decision making power that only a top GM or GM prospect would require. I hope this is all not true, but if it is then the Seahawks are destined to continue to be mediocre at best. So sad. I am just glad that the Huskies are on the up-swing at least there will be one football team to get motivated and excited about.

WTF is going on, I go skiing for a day and come back to all of this ish. Glad the coaching staff has been removed, but Pete Carrol? Coaching the last 10 years in college makes you a front runner to run the whole show in the NFL? Come on man, really. Why can’t we just try and find a proven NFL guy who’s had success and have him come in with his own staff keeping Hasselbeck’s strength in ming and an eye for QB talent for our future (not saying to draft a QB, OL is obviously the greatest need right now, besides a good GM). Plus, everyone saying USC is about to be getting some blow back and Carrol is trying to escape before the ish starts rolling his way. Also, USC isn’t looking that sharp right now, as in about to be rebuilding again.

If you throw out Carroll’s 1st year HC in a one year stint in NY and just go by his record in NE, he has a better winning percentage than Holmgren did with the Seahawks.

Nope, not at all.
It’s a big splash (a ton of dough our owner is spending, on PC’s deal, and on the $12M he’s eating on mora’s deal) – and frankly, it couldn’t have come at a better time. It’s been pretty dreary around here for a couple years, our QB is getting older, and it’s not looking too bright – a high-profile coach signing like this – is a real shot in the arm. Now, let’s hope he can live up to all this.

I see this as a very positive even potential block buster deal. Some of Pete Carroll’s former players are now hot commodities in the NFL. I can’t think of all there names but, Palmer, Palomalo, Leinhart, Cushing (sp) etc… You get the idea. USC has put alot of very good players in the NFL for a long time. Those active players will at least give Seattle a look that would not have been previously given. Couple that with his ability to recruit (a skill you have to have in Seattle) and the Seahawks may be on to something big.

Holmgren had 10 years in Seattle and Carroll had 4? Come on now.
Audible – Great job with the links today.
Um no, I never saw this coming. I’m still trying to get my head around it.
× Flag comment
Okay….couldn’t help myself here.
This comparison is Carroll vs. Holmgren straight up, including Carroll’s one year stint in NY.
Holmgren (SEA):
86-74 Record
Strength of schedule: .3932
Carroll (NE & NY):
33-31 Record
Strength of schedule: .4483
Let’s extrapolate how Carroll’s record would compare to holmgren’s record if he had coached 160 like Holmgren did for the Seahawks:
Carroll would have 83 wins vs. Holmgren’s 86 wins. However Carroll’s played much hard teams with a stength of schedule of .4483 vs. Holmgren’s .3932 – As you can see Holmgren would have won only three more games against much weaker teams.
Also, consider Carroll coached his last NFL game at about the time Holmgren started coaching for us. In the mean time, you would think his experience and success at USC would account for something and make him a better and more prepared coach the 2nd time around. He’s had a lot of time to reflect on his time in the NFL…now he’s going to have another chance.

I said this once already today, but I’d like to hear what Lofa has to say about all of this.
The year after the Seahawks drafted Lofa is when Texas beat USC for the Ntl Championship and I seem to recall The Happy Camper say something about Vince Young not being able to do that to them if they still had Lofa. Translation: Lofa says in school = one more USC championship. I don’t remember if he made this comment to a Seahawks reporter or what. I know he didn’t say it at an end of game press conference. Oh well… Does anyone have any rememberence of this?
× Flag comment
Audible – I’ve gotta admire your dedication:) One thing I like about the Holmgren numbers is the 3 Super Bowls though… of course, I don’t recall The Happy Camper ever coaching the likes of Reggie White, Brett Favre, or the Walt/Hutch combo either.

can anyone tell me why one would select a coach before hiring a general manager?
× Flag comment
Duke,
Just because Holmgren had ten years here and Carroll only had 4 doesn’t negate the comparison. Holmgren also had seven very successful years in GB, which he didn’t come close to matching here. 75-37, .670
Plus, consider that Carroll was fired after one year in NY and he had only three years in NE.
Holmgren’s first four years in Seattle he went 31 – 33, which is exactly the same as Mora’s four years as a head coach.

I’ll always remember what Terry Bradshaw said when Holmgren was announced as our new coach. He said….is he taking Brett Favre with him? Then he chuckled and said, “good luck”. I never like Bradshaw after that…but looking back, I have to admit that he had a point. I’m not trying to disparage what Holmgren accomplished here, but I want to put it into perspective and if you look at the numbers, it’s not clear cut that Holmgren could outcoach Carroll.
A lot of Holmgren’s success was because of the talent he had to work with in Green Bay, as you pointed out.
× Flag comment
Sometimes I get too angry when I don’t get something I’m passionate about… the regular life stuff, I’m very laid back… and I really thought (still do) that Mike Shanahan is/was clearly the best head coaching choice available. I firmly believe he’s one of the top coaches in the NFL. And the Redskins are extremely fortunate.
With that being said, maybe it’s setting in that The Happy Camper is here to stay and I love the Seahawks so much that I’m willing to drink any kool-aid presented to me to feel better about the team/organization…
But I’ve got good news that I clearly forgot about… Mr. Happy was a coach for the Vikings in the late 80s or early 90s (my high school years)… I remember the respect that everyone had for him. He was a hot commodity. There was a lot of people here who wanted him to be the Vikings coach. If that says anything, it’s that he was well respected. He wasn’t some Mike Tice or Brad Childress moron. Think positive thoughts, right?
× Flag comment
Audible – I think I vaguely remember that Bradshaw comment (and didn’t like it). I never liked the Steelers (except when the played the Cowobys in the Super Bowls) so I couldn’t really dislike him anymore than I already did.

And, we’re starting to see now that a lot of Holmgren’s success here was because of the perennially weak schedule we have in the NFC West.
Does anyone think Holmgren would have won 86 game here we played a strength of schedule of .4483 like Carroll did, versus the paltry .3932 that he actually had???

Audible – I don’t it negates it but I do think the comparison is skewed. I think a fairer comparison would be to take Holmgren’s first 4 seasons as HC and Carroll’s and use that. In any case, I think the longer one coaches in the league the more difficult it is to remain a winner. That’s not to say Carroll wouldn’t have gotten better, but to use one man’s numbers from a sample more that twice that of the other isn’t all together fair. Just my opinion.
Bobby – He was with the Bills and Viks both before he got the DC job for the Jets. And he was DC for the 49ers in between Jets HC and Pats HC. He was (is) a respected defensive coach.

Bobby,
What got into me is this. I woke up this morning as was stoked that we were headed in a new direction. Then we found out about Carroll, a supposed retread that we were putting in charge. Instead of just listening to all of doomsayers, I wanted to take a more objective look at Carroll’s background and record.
What I turned up gives me A LOT of reason for optimism. I’m totally on board with this move and the timing of it is terrific. We could have spent another year spinning our wheels behind Mora and company. It’s not just his bad record but also his demeanor and his behavior as a coach. It never fit.
Instead, we bring in Carroll who will have two years to start turning things around…but one of those two years would have been Mora’s last year here. So, by doing the tough thing, and the “unfair” thing, we’re a lot further ahead.

Not doubting you, Audible. Good perspective. I mean that.
Duke – I meant that in his time in MN that he truly was respected. Many were saying he should have been “our” coach (sure as heck not “my” coach) in Minnesota. He was truly respected. Come to think of it, the only coaches, off the top of my head, that Minnesotans seemed to have loved (I don’t quite remember much of the Bud Grant days) is The Happy Camper and Tony Dungy. Normally, everyone around here hates people (insert bobbyk joke here), but they didn’t with Pete or Dungy. So that’s gotta be a heck of a compliment for him. I could be forgetting someone, but I don’t think so. Even when the Vikes set an NFL record for most points scored in a season, Brian Billick was the OC and peole thought he was an idiot. If you’re Carroll or Dungy, that must speak well that the locals like you (and with Dungy, he went played for the Gophers so he had the local ties, whereas the Camper didn’t).

I wasn’t around last night but it looks like Audible decided to work the second shift in pointing out how Holmgren’s Seahawks tenure greatly benefited from a weak schedule. It’s true and it’s even more startling when you look at how many quality wins he had. The Seahawks had no national respect for a very good reason.
Pete Caroll was the next great thing in the NFL while he was a coordinator in the early 90s. He was doing pretty well for the Jets until Dan Marino and the Fake Spike at which point the entire year went down hill (1994).

I have not seen the Seahawks on ESPN this much sence the superbowl. Pete carrolls OC seems good, the Bears really want him. Mora might be DC for redskins. This is going to be a fin offseason.

I came into the season optimistic thinking that:
1). Mora would have the same success he had his first year in Atlanta
2). Hasselbeck would be the same QB he was before the back injury
3). Walter Jones would be out there doing his thing
4). Ruskell’s draft choices would step up and pan out well.
Ruskell’s weak defense, the lack of Walter Jones and Hasselbeck’s poor play conspired to squash the Seahawks as we knew them. I would argue that Hasselbeck’s bottom 5 play the final 4 games and Mora’s willingness to continue to trot him out there while the score was 48-3 to score garbage points were the nails in the coffin.
Now, we are going to go into the new season with a new GM, a new coach, a new QB and new LT. I don’t know what kind of magic the new coach can work, but it’s going to be a while to get back where we need to be.

Gabe97 – No question. NFL Network ran the 2006 playoff game against the Caoyboys last night. There is a part of me that feels like part of the reason Carroll is being sought is because of the exposure it’s going to bring the team and the ensuing revenue.
I agree with Nighthawk 100% when he suggested Carroll (or whomever) bring Zorn back as QB coach. He is one of the best in the business and it certainly wouldn’t hurt the communication between Carroll and Hass, as they get to know one another.

After the Bucs Sunday Night game in 2008 I figured it would be years before the Seahawks had another National Game. It looks like they can get one this year with Carroll.
Sometimes it’s not a question of “is there a better QB on the roster or readily available than Hasselbeck is right NOW.” Sometimes it’s about deciding how much responsibility Hasselbeck has for last year’s crash and what is his upside from here.
This early in the offseason, I don’t have the answer to your question Duke.
× Flag comment
pabuwal – It’s a question worth addressing, I totally agree. He’s had 2 awful seasons in a row and has suffered multiple injuries during that period. I’ve said here, several times, that I really believe the long range answer to QB will be the new GM’s top priority.
× Flag comment
We know the Seahawks are a bad team for many reasons – not just the OL, not just the QB, not just the Defense. They had a very competitive run to end 2008 with Holmgren/Wallace. I thought they could build on that this year with Hasselbeck but instead it became much worse. By canning Mora/Ruskell and bringing on Carroll the Seahawks showed they are going to blow this whole thing up like TB did.
As long as Hasselbeck is on the roster, he is the Seahawks starting QB. Even when the Seahawks were losing by 20+, he was still in the game. Do bad teams inhibit their growth with a 35 year old injured QB who has had only 1 good year of the past 4?
Who felt more optimistic at the end of the year – Bucs who showed growth with a rookie QB or Seahawks fans who had to watch a beloved QB go up in flames?
× Flag comment
The thing I like about the Carroll signing is Pete knows college kid and that will help him in drafting players maybe a QB. Carroll getting to do his own drafting might turn out well. His other NFL coaching jobs he never got to draft the players he wants. At USC he had full control and did very well. Maybe with Carroll getting the players he wants this time in the NFL instead on a ave coach he becomes a great coach. We’ll see after this draft and the years to come.
× Flag comment
That was one of the failings of Mora, to me. Many coaches operate this way, but his reluctance to deviate from the opening day starting lineup, unless necessitated by injury, was frustrating to watch. It was stunning to me that he finally made the Spencer / Unger swap, but of course that likely would not have happened without Spencer’s busted up right hand. There were opportunities to get Teel in the game, to take live snaps, with little to no consequence. No expectations for him to come up short on expectations, games were out of hand. I don’t see that as giving up. I see that as taking advantage of a bad situation for positive results in the future. But, those days appear to be over.
× Flag comment
You nailed it Duke. Mora was too concerned with trying to score garbage points at the end, we have no idea what the Seahawks have in Teel. I’ve watched every snap of Teel’s college career and I’m not even sure where he is in his development. I’d at least like to know if he can look competent in an NFL game. That would be a start.

This move speaks to the importance of marketing and media savvy the front office places upon the head coach. Had Mora succeeded there, he might have retained his job. But the fan base, by and large, abandonded him after several press conference gaffs that left us all less than reassured.
Carroll will perform with the media. He’s a smart guy and a successful coach. I’m not buying into he previous HC gigs as an indication of impending mediocrity. He’s a plus defensive mind with an eye for talent, and the team has given him control of that. Great move? Maybe. But it certainly underscores the “entertainment philosophy” of the organization. They have no intention of losing their fans. A bold move was needed to generate a positive buzz. This accomplishes that goal. We’ll see if they can now put it on the field. Leaning toward the positive with this move.

True. It is another thing to hear it from people who never even watched us play this season.

That means it was talked about all over the NFL, not just us who were at the games and watching on TV.

Duke… I’m understanding your thoughts on the interview side… here’s another view… think if Cowher or Gruden had walked in the door asking for the position… would we continue to interview? ..
also, I’m sure you’ve met people you immediatly like & trust.. knowing some of the ego’s involved in the available group, hitting it off with one of the first interviewers’ may not be such a bad thing… also… Not like this is our first evaluation of the market… I had a knee jerk on the # of interviews also…
Wow! Has there been some great posting’s on this or what??? Great, meaningful posts!!! Eric & Ryan have to be pretty proud of this group…
