Jason La Confora of NFL.com is now reporting that the Seahawks list of potential candidates for the vacant general manager position is down to four, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

According to the report, Ravens personnel director Eric DeCosta and Packers director of football operations John Schneider were two of the final four candidates who have been contacted.

La Confora also goes on to mention that Arizona Cardinals director of player personnel Steve Keim and Philadelphia GM Tom Heckert are the two other finalists. However, La Confora says he has not determined if Keim has been contacted. But he does report that to his knowledge Heckert has not been contacted for the Seahawks position.

Indeed Duke. I don’t know enough about these guys. My gut keeps telling me about a Keim/Grimm combo. Keim knowing about talent eval. and Grimm knowing about the Smashmouth brand of football…… Any thoughts?

  2. I’m a Heckert fan and like DeCosta as well. Really don’t know enough about Schneider and Keim. Heckert has had success most everywhere he’s been. And look at the Eagles; they are now loaded for the next several years without taking a significant step backward. Reid may have the final say there but Heckert is his right hand man and by accounts is the guy who assembles the talent the pick from.

  3. princeaden says:

Isn’t Heckert already gone to Cleveland?

  4. Like I said in the other post; I’m a bit out of the loop today. I knew he is interviewing there but I thought that was tonight. He signed, already?

  5. princeaden says:

Duke- Hawkfan1951 posted a link on the “Brown to interview Eckert” post that my comp. wont let me get to that sounds like he’s going to Cleveland.

  6. Getting DeCosta would be a coup! He’s considered a rising star in Baltimore’s organization.

That is really a great list of four top personnel pros. Its not known that all four of these guys actually want the job, but DeCosta has never been a GM yet, and has only been a personnel director for a year, so it would be a big step for him.

The Ravens have drafted a lot of tough SOBs in recent years. I like their style.

  7. Audible says:

The page posted earlier that said Heckert was signed by Cleveland was probably a mistake because it has since been removed.

  8. Audible says:

And, if it turns out that Heckert would accept the job on the spot, without considering other options, I would be leary of him anyway because that is pretty impulsive and to the point of being almost desperate.

  9. Heckert hasn’t signed with Cleveland yet. According to reports, he’s supposed to talk with Holmgren on Wednesday.

  10. Audible says:

I think we have a much better shot at Heckert than Cleveland because our job would be a promotion for him, whereas the Cleveland job is similar to Philly in that Holmgren will have veto power on all decisions, much like Andy Reed has now.

  11. brosco13 says:

the heckert to cleveland thing is still just a rumor.

I definitely like DeCosta from the Ravens. they have been drafting a lot of excellent players lately, eg: Ray Rice, Flacco, Oher, to name a few. I would love to have those three guys on the hawks right now.

  12. Mr_Fish says:

Interesting that LaCanfora’s list doesn’t include Interim GM Webster. Or is the list really down to five?

  13. Hawkfan1951 says:

My post for the other page may have been a bit off. I’ve looked at the NFL Network since I put that entry up… and they’re saying, and MH said the interview with Heckert will be tomorow…

    My bad!!

I sort of feel like “Quick Draw McGraw!!!”

  14. We should still be an appealing spot for a top candidate GM – hands-off owner who is willing to spend $, and while the past two years have been a disaster – I still feel like we’ve built some tradition/expectation of success as a franchise.

Will be real interesting to see how a new GM deals with Mora, and his top coordinators.

    Why Holmgren Isn’t in Seattle

I’ve been talking to Randy Lerner, he was unbelievable – unbelievable – and he so wants this team to be a great football team for the people of this city, the Browns fans all over the world and he challenged me. When you get that type of support from your owner, that kind of sealed the deal for me.

    “I’m excited, very excited.
    From the Browns web-site

  16. eyeland – I’m not sure if that quote makes my happy for Mike or very angry with Seattle. I guess I won’t know for sure for a couple seasons.

  17. Mr_Fish says:

That quote from Holmgren is nothing but PR fluff. I’m surprised anyone is taking it seriously.

Holmgren was always good at the PR game. People who say he never called out any of his players must have been mesmerized by his kindly old grandpa schtick, because he did call them out in his own roundabout way. Especially his QB’s. Have we really forgotten how he handled Jon Kitna and how it spawned a million “He made Konta sad” jokes? Then there were all those times he referred to the young men playing for him as “young pups” who still had a lot to learn… Seattle fans lapped it up and never questioned anything he said, because he was HOLMGOD, football’s pre-eminent genius.

I have a hunch that the fans in the Dawg Pound are more critical, and that Holmgren’s routine isn’t going to play as well with them as it did with us.

  18. It played just fine in Green Bay so I’m sure he’ll be able to handle the ‘pound.

  19. CYRREEN says:

It seems like the whole Cleveland is in love with him already. Take a look for yourself.

  20. Despite there recent winning ways, I would prefer we didn’t have someone from Arizona. I’m surprised that Holmgren is hiring a gm. Thought he’d wear both hats like Ruskell did here.

    Roundabout????

I’ve seen him pop his cork so bad I thought his head was going to explode. Players, refs, coaches,…. the hot dog vendor if he get’s too close to the sideline. He takes no prisoners. I wish I could find a link to that vid of him screaming at Andy Reid on the sidelines in Green Bay way back when but I can’t. If it’s out there, I must be googling the wrong key words.

    I’ll try a photo instead:

  22. Hmmm. No images eh? O.K…. here’s a link. Something for your scrapbook.

  23. bigmike04 says:

Cleveland can’t hired Heckert yet because Eagles are still playing so they would have to wait until they lose and same goes for any other team looking for someone to be their GM they have to wait if their looking at playoff team loses.

  24. brosco13 says:

holgren went to cleveland because he doesnt want to have to answer to Todd Leiweke or however you spell that, he is power hungry.

    DeCosta is the man;

DeCosta players the raves picked: Gaither OT, Oher OT, Suggs LB/DE, Ray RIce RB, Flacco QB, Dawan Landry S, Haloti Ngata DT, the list of studs he’s taken in the draft goes on and on.
