Hawks release DE Walker, sign WR Hass

The Seahawks made a minor move today, releasing defensive end Derek Walker and bringing up wide receiver Mike Hass from the practice squad to the active roster.

This likely means Ben Obomanu (hamstring) will not go on Sunday, and Hass will become the team’s fourth receiver if he’s active.

It will be interesting to see if the Oregon State product makes it out on the field, at least for special teams. It would be his first playing time this season.

This is the second time Hass has been elevated to Seattle’s active roster. Seattle also had Hass active for Week 9 against Detroit, but Hass was inactive for the Lions game.

Walker has not been active for a game this season. Seattle needed to make a move to clear a roster spot, and had been keeping Walker on the active roster instead of the practice squad because there likely was interest from other team around the league to sign him.

I’m a self-admitted hometown guy. But, does anyone else think that Daniel Teo’Neshiem is worth a look as a late round pick?

  2. If keeping Walker on the active roster (nobody else can touch him, unlike the Michael Bennett situation) was important, why wait until now to release him? Our season is basically over. I understand the need for a 4th WR tomorrow, but risking Walker’s loss seems a bit silly. I don’t claim that Walker is going to be the next Reggie White, but he’s the exact type of player that we seem to want around here; he’s young, earning minimal salary and if he’s been kept up to this point there must be some type of upside with respect to his skills. From a football standpoint, you’d think it would make more sense to IR Obo and sign Hass, which would have allowed Walker to have been kept going into training camp next year. Afterall, there’s only one more game remaining in the season after tomorrow. I suppose Obo will be healthy for Tennessee (and Hass will be released again) but there’s the risk of losing Walker in the process. I don’t know. Maybe the staff feels that Walker isn’t any good, nor will ever be (which would make you wonder why he’s on the roster in the first place). Am I missing something?

  3. I honestly don’t have any remaining faith in the coaching staff or the front office. Whoever made this decision, for right or wrong – I hope I am right in saying that they won’t be making many more for the Hawks in the near future!?

  4. To answer my own question, the only thing I can think of is money. If Obo were to go to IR, he’d still get paid. Adding Hass would have forced the team to give him a 1 game paycheck (and probably 2 if Obo were on IR). While all the while Walker would be getting 2 game checks. So, instead of paying 3 players a total of 6 game checks, this way the team is saving thousands by only having to pay 2 players 4 game checks. This doesn’t seem like a great football move, but it does save money. Game checks are a heck of a lot more than players who are on the PS too. And if you’re wondering why someone like Terrill, who has been a whipping boy to a certain extent, wasn’t let go instead, it’s because a vet like him has his 16 game salary guaranteed after he makes the initial roster. Maybe I’m reading too much into this…

  5. …Maybe BobbyK. lol

But being led by a business man like Leiwekie – you’re probably not far off!

I know I backed you on you Ruston Webster theory a few days ago, but I’m beginning to feel more and more like we need to clean house.

Luckily I don’t think any GM or HC will see Seattle as the kind of project that they can’t turn around fairly quickly – we’re no St. Louis, Detroit or Kansas City just yet!

  6. princeaden says:

I agree that it’s silly to risk losing Walker at this point after protecting him for so long, when they could have just as easily put Obo. on IR for the remainder. On the bright side, I do like Hass. He seems to me to be in the mold of a Paul Skansi. Fearless, tough and good hands. I would much rather have that than what we witnessed last weekend from Mr. Branch.

  7. Dukeshire says:

There may be something to that but I think it’s more likely that they feel Terrill (if the discussion is between just those two) gives them a better chance to win, as Mora is fond of saying. Not that I agree with that, but Walker not being able to find the field this year says a lot. With as many roster moves as they have gone through the past two seasons, it’s hard to imagine they are concerned about the money, at this point. I like what I saw of Walker this preseason and I hope he makes it back to them.

  9. OakleyD:we’re no St. Louis, Detroit or Kansas City just yet!

I think the Seahawks are a lot like Kansas City used to be. They were a good team until Herm Edwards got his mitts on them. Then they floundered and he blamed all his coaches and fired them all. Then they floundered some more and he started blaming the players making them all want to leave. By the time he was finally axed there was nothing left to build on.

This has nothing to do with anything other than relatively big news.

    Absolutely, unequivocally, no.

Earther just became my new favorite poster.

Well thought out, completely correct, and aptly cynical.

You are, my friend, a smart, smart person. Post on!

  14. “I think the Seahawks are a lot like Kansas City used to be. They were a good team until Herm Edwards got his mitts on them. Then they floundered and he blamed all his coaches and fired them all.”

Ugh – say it ain’t so . .. .are we really on the road to multiple 4-12 types sesons? I’d thought we were a decently talented team coming into this year. Doesn’t feel like it now.

One thing that differentiates us (from KC, Detroit) – we have been willing to shell out money for free agents over the years. As long as they pick the right GM, and that spending trend continues (and why wouldn’t it), we should be able to quicken the recovery.

  15. Seattle will go down more..we have a way to go till we hit bottom. but it is nearer than we think.Vulcan Magmt. could be the Culprit (Lieweke)…Mr Allen could be lead unfortunately down a rosy path to financial trouble by these people..Look no further than the Mariners (Bavasi),Sonics (Whitsitt,W.Walker) all but killed the franchises….. Mr. Allen, you are kind, wonderful man, please wake-up stop this train wreck current Seahawks,,,,,

  16. If the organization and Ruskell wouldn’t have parted ways a few weeks ago, most of our talk would be focused on getting rid of him. Afterall, it’s his team who is responsible for the Houston and Tampa games. And when the season ended, people would have been happy after it was made public that he wasn’t coming back.

On the downside of it being known that Ruskell would be gone is the fact that we have a terrible team that seems to be getting worse. It’s no fun to blame Ruskell anymore because he’s gone so, in some cases, we’re jumping the gun on some guys who we still have. We’re simply in purgatory hell with waiting for the season to get over (especially after our “performances” the last few weeks).

Sure, the Holmgren situation mucked things up. I still think he would have been the safest hire (especially with his talent for QB and us needing to get one in the next few years) but not necessarily the best hire. Personally, I wanted him. I think he’s probably in the top 20% of anyone we could (or will) have gotten. I don’t think we could have gone wrong with him. The thing that scares me is that if I think Holmgren is in the top 20% of people we could have gotten, that means the people we might get may be on the wrong side of the other 80% (and we end up worse off because of it). As others have said though, this also could be a blessing in disguise. Time will certainly tell.

I, for one, trust Paul Allen and to a lesser degree, but trust nevertheless, Tod Leiweke. I wouldn’t trade PA in for any other owner in sports and the other is a businessman and, seemingly, a good one at that. We wants results and when he isn’t getting them will hold someone accountable. That’s the reason Ruskell isn’t coming back. As much as football truly is a game, there are business aspects that cannot be ignored and that’s a reason I have no problem with a businessman in charge of the organization — BUT he gives full football control to someone who is a football person. And I appreciate that Leiweke doesn’t claim to be a football guru and will admist it. If I’m a GM candidate, it’s a wonderful situation to be walking into.

I don’t believe this team would have gone to the Super Bowl without Ruskell. He put too many solid pieces in place in ’05 with the LBs and most FA signings. Sure, he whiffed on Spencer and Greene, but when you judge that off-season it has to be considered an overall success.

The following seasons weren’t so successful and that’s a reason for our demise. And the reason he became the toast of the town to unemployed in less than 5 years.

I’m willing to wait and let this play out and see who we bring in before rushing to judgement.

    Go Hawks!

  17. For the record, even at the midway point of the season, I was willing to give Ruskell/Mora one more year to turn things around. But after the Houston/Tampa games, it has become obvious that something isn’t right (not that many didn’t know that before those games). I don’t want to know what it’s like to have a worse couple of weeks than what we have just gone through. But tomorrow is set up to make it three bad (or unbelievably freakinly terrible) weeks in a row. I hope I’m wrong.

  18. pdway:Ugh – say it ain’t so . .. .are we really on the road to multiple 4-12 types sesons? I’d thought we were a decently talented team coming into this year. Doesn’t feel like it now.

Well, it’s just my opinion but I think this team’s got plenty of talent. They’re just not very well coached. Before this season started I was really looking forward to seeing what Mora and Knapp would do with the passing game. I naively blamed their past failures in that area on bad QBs like Michael Vick and JaMarcus Russell. Well, I still don’t thing either of those guys is any good but Mora/Knapp not only didn’t make good use of what Homgren left them, they dismantled it. And don’t get me started on Gus Bradly. I mean, I really don’t have anything against the guy but this is his first DC position and it’s clearly obvious that he’s in way over his head.

I really think they need to dump these guys regardless of the “one season isn’t enough” rule. I mean, I agree with the wisdom in the rule but it seems pretty clear to me that the best you’re ever going to be able to expect out of these guys is another version of that hopeless Atlanta team.

If I were in charge I think I’d like to go out and hire Mike Shanahan or Marty Schottenheimer. However, it looks like Shanahan is going to Washington and Schottenheimer is retired for good. Other than that, when it comes to available coaches, I think it sure would be nice if Dungy got the itch to come back. I think he could do great things with this team.

But…………… he probably won’t so where does that leave you? I don’t know. I know that, from my poor perspective, rookie coaches like Sean Payton, Tony Sparano and Rex Ryan seemed to have come out of nowhere. There’s probably other people kicking around like that somewhere. All you need is the right people in charge of football operations who know who to hire and how to sign them.

  19. earther – good arguement with Kansas City – I think they are certainly closer to what the Seahawks COULD be if we select the wrong front office / HC candidates following this season. But I have to side with “pdway” – we can’t be that bad!

I still believe we are much more talented than our record shows, maybe I have my Hawks tinted glasses on – but I look at the Seahawks and think any coach or GM would have the self confidence to believe they could turn this franchise around with much more ease than DET, ST. L & KANSAS.

  20. princeaden says:

Even to mentioned along w/those three is a crime. TL better get it right. The clock is ticking.

  21. snydro22 says:

God I can’t wait for Paul Allen and Tod Leiweke to hire a new President and GM so you can all shut up about them..

Seriously, if you truly think Holmgren is the only person in the world who knows anything about football or is able to make personnel decisions, then why didn’t we win 10 Super Bowls in a row?

  22. bigmike04 says:

To me it would make sense if Putting Burleson and Ben on IR and sign Haas and Jones or someone to fill their spot.

Thought If Seahawks lose against Green Bay and Titian than I think Paul Allen should think about weather to keep the coaching staff around? Nobody should used that it was his 1st yr as the HC if he was a rookie HC but he isnt and let all face the fact that Mora only had one good year as HC that when Vick debut otherwise Mora is hack and his whole coaching staff need to be shown the door as it wouldn’t be great to tie the new GM hand if, he can’t bring in the coach that he wants.

  23. OakleyD:But I have to side with “pdway” – we can’t be that bad!

Well, so was I (siding with pdway). I was just elaborating a little bit.

On the other hand, re-reading my own post I have to say that it’s got to be the most incoherent pile of gibberish ever laid out in pixels and bits so I can’t really blame anyone for not following it.
