Wrapping up the Wendesday Mora press conference

It was a pretty standard and nondescript Wednesday press conference with head coach Jim Mora. But then again, what can he say at this point? He was positive as always, but on some level the things that need to be discussed really can’t or won’t be discussed.

Here’s some highlights …

On the injury front, as expected running back Julius Jones is out for this week with a bruised lung.

“He’s doing better,” Mora said. “He was in meetings today. He said he’s feeling good.
but he won’t be playing Sunday.”

There is no timetable for Jones’ return. But Mora hopes it will be next week.

One thing that Mora was asked will be if Jones could lose his starting job if Forsett has another monster game. One of the cliched rules in pro football is that a starter doesn’t lose his job to injury. The Wally Pipp factor isn’t an option. Mora kind of subscribes to it.

“What it might do is force us to adjust how we split the workload more, which we’ve tried to be conscious of when we go into any game,” he said. “I’ve said it a couple of times, “if a guy gets hot, just let him run.”

Apparently, just don’t let him start.

On Monday, Mora mentioned that Forsett had similar qualities to running back Warrick Dunn. Eric wrote about it today and Mora was asked about it again. And he mentioned that the qualities are similar, but that Forsett hasn’t done it with the consistency that Dunn did with Atlanta and Tampa Bay.

“Let’s not just disqualify guy because of his physical attributes, let’s give him a chance to play,” Mora said.

With Forsett starting on Sunday, he will be removed from the kick-off return team and Ben Obomanu will fill in his place.

As for other injuries … Mora said a few guys may miss or be limited in today’s practice, but will still play on Sunday. One person who won’t be limited is quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, who will practice today.

“That’s a good thing,” Mora said.

Mora spent some time talking about Lawyer Milloy, who had played more than he has in the last few weeks, and said that could continue.

“We played more six defensive backs and even played seven defensive back pack packages,” Mora said. “That’s something we’ll continue to do. And you might see him on some of the run downs as well. We want him to continue to have an impact.”

That being said, Milloy still remains a back-up.

“He’s dealt with it like a true pro,” Mora said. “I was pretty clear with when he signed him that his role was come and be back-up safety, play special teams and be there if and when we need him in whatever role. He was fine with that, but that doesn’t mean he wants to be in the line-up.”

Mora absolutely gushed about the Vikings at times.

“When you watch them offensively, defensively, speical teams, you don’t see holes,” he said. “You see a team that is solid at every position. They’re big, they’re physical, they’re fast, they’re sound fundamentally. It will be a heck of a challenge for us.”

On Brett Favre …

I respect as much as anything the durability and the enthusiasm he plays the game with. You watch the games, you watch the tapes. And he’ll throw little  a check down and  he’s running down the field to throw a block for the back.  And you’re going, “this guy is 40, what’s he doing?”  But he’s always played with that youthful enthusiasm. It’s fun to watch a guy that enjoys plays playing the game as much as he enjoys playing the game.

On Adrian Peterson …

Our ends are going to be very important in put up an edge in the run game. One of the great things that this runner does is cut the ball back. If you don’t show him a solid edge. He gets the edge and he’s got the speed to turn it up and go. ”

On Jared Allen …

All you have to do is watch that Green Bay. It’s hard to sleep. I think the one thing that will help us out is that Lock got back last week and was able to get plays – 89 plays to be specific – so he’s going to be better this week. Sean is an athletic guy, who moves his feet well, and is a good pass protector, but we’re still going to have to give him help because Jared Allen is a special right end.

  1. Dukeshire says:

“We played more six defensive backs and even played seven defensive back pack packages,” Mora said. “That’s something we’ll continue to do…” That absolutely puts my stomach in knots. On Sunday night Mora explained how they don’t have any such thing as a “prevent defense”. Well, perhaps not in name but certainly in practice. It’s not as if they’re play man in those 6 & 7 DB packages. I absolutely despise that type of passive defense. He runs out 6 and 7 DBs with Adrian Peterson lined up in the backfield and he’ll make what Gore did to them look like childs play. Please turn on the “relentless pressure” Coach Mora. We were told that is what this coaching staff was all about.

  2. BobbyAyala says:

Honestly Duke, they don’t have the horses to get to the qb and their blitzing is futile anyway. In a 43, your DE’s gotta be good.

  3. Dukeshire says:

The weakest part of this defense, as I see it, is the play of the safeties and beyond Turfant and Wilson, the secondary in general. Putting the responsibility on them to slow teams down and relying on them to hold opposing teams in check without support from a pass rush, is disastrous. This d line is not being put in a position to be successful, IMO and that is restricting their growth and future success. In addition, 7 DBs take all but 1 LBs off the field and that is the strongest unit on this defense. I do not like passive. This is a passive philosophy, IMO.

  4. ballgame says:

I would agree with that. I don’t think anyone thought our D-line was great coming into the season, but they have been terrible, and you can’t blitz with a D-line that can’t hold their gaps. Really I don’t think either Knapp or Bradley has really been able to do anything they wanted to this season.

Really the blame of this season, and this is the first time I have said this falls on the feet of the GM. We just don’t have the horses, either do to bringing in poor players or injuries. But I thought last week was a perfect example. I thought the coaches had a great gameplan designed around what it is that we can do well. But we showed up to a gun fight with only one bullet.

  5. We are so overmatched this game that I’m sick to my stomach just thinking about it.

  6. Could it be poor coaching that poor coaching is our biggest problem?

Look at how many “talented players” we have on this roster who are underperforming in one way or another. What is the common link among them? Coaching!

Curry, Tatupu, LoJack, Spencer, Mebane, Tapp, Jennings, etc…It seems like we’re more talented than our record suggests. I’m wondering what some of the top coaches in the league would do with this same group.

  7. Inconsistency on the defensive side of the ball has been the one thing that stands out. Sometimes it seems we are reacting to what other teams present rather than creating match-up problems for them. We have a good core group of physical athletes that need to be “let loose” and create mismatches and nightmares in other teams preparing. Most successful defenses are predicated on creating confusion; not knowing who is coming and from where. Let’s ratchet things up a bit and stop “playing not to get beat”. There is too much talent for them to be this inconsistent.

  8. Audible, with 4 changes along the OL and DL, doesn’t matter who, just 4 switched players, and Bill Belichick, for instance, this team would likely be undefeated or have 1 loss, and likely be super bowl bound.

  9. We don’t have the pass rush or the secondary to compete with the Vikings offense. I expect the Vikes to score plenty of points to win. With a now-healthy Offensive line, I am expecting improving performances out of our offense.

From here on out, the games are a chance to see progress from our younger players, and figure out who stays and who goes among the older and more expensive players.

I want to see Red Bryant on the field. I don’t care about whether he fits a particular scheme, I want to know if he can start at DT next year or not.

I want to see the O line come together and play like five starters should play, and after 2 or 3 games from now if they have not shown improvement, then move Unger to Center to see how he does there.

Spencer either needs to step up and earn his next contract, or he should expect to be offered a contract worthy of a backup. Or if he has any more injuries, no contract offer.

Make Cory Redding prove he value also. Is he worth another contract or not?

Move Deon Butler to split end in place of Branch and see what he can do. Find out if we need to find another WR in the offseason or if Butler can step up and do the job.

And keep giving Forsett work on first and second down to see how he holds up.

  10. BobbyAyala says:

“Could it be poor coaching that poor coaching is our biggest problem? ”

I think the coaching is mediocre, predictable, and a little passe. But not the biggest problem.

Duke’s right about the zone defense, but, then again, I don’t think we have a defensive line that is very good.

Gus is rolling out his zone, but there’s no one near the caliber of Warren Sapp on that defensive line, and, well, smart QB’s with time to throw can’t be stopped, no matter how many DB’s are on the field.

Knapp is a boring, predictable OC, even his gadget plays were played out three or four years ago.

Mora is a young head coach and maybe a little too emotional on the sideline.

But the biggest problem is the person that built the team. He poured all of the resources into a vanilla defense, he failed time and time again to bring in a pass rusher, and he’s ignored the offense so much it’s now just a little more intriguing and successful as Oakland’s.

  11. “they don’t have the horses to get to the qb and their blitzing is futile anyway. In a 43, your DE’s gotta be good. ”

Agreed – but why is our blitzing futile? We’ve got personnel at LB that can blitz, our DB’s are capable of blitzing. So what is it that we are doing, or failing to do, that separates us from teams that blitz successfully?

Maybe i’m wrong, but whereas i see D-line pressure as primarily a function of the talent level of your D-lineman (and their ability to beat the guy they are going against), it seems to me that blitz packages are something you can coach, and structure, right?

  12. I like to drink kool aid as much as the next guy, but I think you need to drink the stuff to stomach where we are right now.

The DL has 1 legit NFL player (Mebane). Everyone else are nothing special. Sure, they could be a good role player if they had a good/great player around them, but the “talent” we have on the DL does not stand on its own. We see the results week after week and I’m sick of our DL. They are fine at stopping the run, but there’s nobody we can ever expect to generate a consistent pressure. This is a bad unit.

We definitely have a talented set of LBs, but they aren’t allowed to play to their strengths b/c every LB needs a good line in front of them to maximize their talents. Add the fact that Curry isn’t very smart at this point in his career (but will be) and that only adds gas to the fire. It would be nice if they all could be healthy at the same time but continuity isn’t as important for this unit as it is for an OL or a QB/WR combo.

We have less than stellar Safety play. It’s simply not that good. Grant is an aging player who has never made plays. Sure, he’s a fine/okay player… certainly doesn’t suck… but when you’re paid like a superstar, I’d like more production. The FS problems have been well documented.

However, I do like our starting CBs of Trufant/Wilson.

Basically, our D isn’t in good shape and the offense is even in worse shape.

  13. “On Sunday night Mora explained how they don’t have any such thing as a “prevent defense”. Well, perhaps not in name but certainly in practice. It’s not as if they’re play man in those 6 & 7 DB packages. I absolutely despise that type of passive defense. ”

Totally agree. QB’s and WR’s are too good – you give them time, and they will get open, even if it’s only a step or a half-step open, and the accurate QB’s will hit them. This plan is just especially frustrating on 3rd downs, where Mora/Bradley seem to love to employ it.

I’m not yet in the fire Mora camp – not a big enough sample size yet – but if the season continue to play out as it has – I’m happy to find a new DC.

  14. FireRuskellNow says:

Expect a Vikings blowout, and a nagging reminder of what a pitiful job Ruskell has done in Seattle each time Steve Hutchinson destroys that useless tub of lard Colin Cole on each running play.

  15. Unlike the AZ game, this is a game in which we truly have no chance.

  16. What do you mean we have “no chance” to win this game?!

All we have to do is pressure the QB, stop the run, defend the pass, get off the field on 3rd down, run the ball well, protect Matt, get a few turnovers, and get off to a quick start on the road in an early game in November. The Vikings better watch out!

  17. Maybe I’ve been drinking too much Jone’s Soda….This Suh, Suh, Suh, Sucks!

  18. Tough to blitz when you have corners who really can’t cover.

The Tampa 2 Defense is one of the great fallacies every perpetrated on the NFL. You need All Pro kind of Defensive lineman and an All Pro MLB to make it work successfully. The Bucs had them, the Colts have them and the Bears had them several years ago. But the reality is, what kind of defense wouldn’t be great with those ingredients.

The problem lies when you have average to below average players in those positions like the Lions and Seahawks. Then it becomes truly horrific.

  19. pabuwal, the tampa 2 isn’t a “fallacy”. As you just pointed out, it works if you have a Warren Sapp-type DT. We have the LBs. We have an offseason and money to spend. We need our Warren Sapp. That would change everything.

  20. So somebody educate me – what’s the upside of the Tampa 2? I guess if you can actually get a rush with 3 d-lineman, you then have that many more people in coverage? Are there any other more sophisticated wrinkles to it?

  21. I thought the same thing earlier today. What the hell? If you front 4 generates A LOT of pressure… I don’t care what kind of stupid name you give your defense, it’s going to be good. Lets not forget that Sapp wasn’t the only good, Pro Bowl caliber player on those good/great Buc defensive lines. Booger was very, very good (who’d name their kid that?) and Simeon Rice was one of the best pure pass rushers in the NFL. We have a Booger in Mebane. We just don’t have the Pro Bowl DT, nor the Pro Bowl DE. I don’t remember the other DE, but I’m pretty sure he was a high draft pick too (maybe Upshaw? he was a #1… too lazy to look it up).

As stated before, I’m waiting for the “relentless” pass rushing D that Mora promised at his press conference. And Ruskell’s year 1 letter to fans also promised a dominant DL that Seahawk fans would/could be proud of. Where the hell is it? Seriously! Where? If you make a promise like that and it’s 5 years later, what the hell is wrong?

  22. Stevos – where do we find the Simeon Rice, the Dwight Freeny, the Robert Mathis, the Adewale Ogunleye DEs that power the Tampa 2 ?

  23. hellava good question pabuwal. 32 GMs are asking the same question. One will get lucky and accidentally draft the next Simeon Rice and then claim he’s a genius.

I have not been impressed with our DEs this year. We don’t have a Rice, but I’m sure he wouldn’t have been the quite the same without Sapp to play next to. We’ve got some players in Mebane, Curry, Tapp, Tatupu… what can we do but try to add a better DT and S in the offseason and just see what happens? Our bigger investment this offseason need to be on offense. If our offense can start scoring some points maybe we won’t need so much D.

  24. Actually, Rice was every bit as dominant without playing on the same DL as Sapp. He was a dominant, pass rushing Pro Bowler for the Cardinals… before getting traded to Tampa.

  25. Rice actually had his career high in sacks (16.5) with the Cardinals, although he was more consistent in getting double digit sacks as a Buc.

  26. As much as I respect Jared Allen, I firmly believe Kevin Williams is the Vikings’ best defensive player. Allen is #2.

Max Unger is going to get manhandled by Williams on Sunday. It’s not going to be a pretty site.

This is one of those games where we have a chance if they don’t take us too seriously or we get a bunch of turnovers. And by watching the film of us I don’t know why they would take us too seriously. So, there’s always a chance. I wouldn’t bet any money on it, but stranger things have happened. My prediction is more like 35-10. And, unfortunately, we don’t have the 35.

  27. thursday says:

i’m looking forward to forsett starting, if nothing else

  28. I don’t know how excited I am to see him against Pat & Kevin Williams though.

  29. yellaman says:

seahawks are 11 point underdogs. I would take vikings plus the points. I’m just sayin.

  30. bigmike04 says:

Anyone beside me think Hawks will get killed in minnesota as that team is really good on offensive and defensive and to make it worse Hawks aren’t that great of run stopping team which they have to be to stop Adrian Peterson.

  31. bigmike04: well, yes. Although I think run defense is actually the strength of our team.

  32. FireRuskellNow says:

“bigmike04: well, yes. Although I think run defense is actually the strength of our team.”

Which is sad because the run defense isn’t really that good at all.

  33. I don’t think the run defense is bad at all (not with Mebane in the line-up, unlike the SF game).
