The Seattle Seahawks announced that team owner Paul Allen has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

According to the team’s statement, Allen has already begun treatment. A note went out to employees of Vulcan on Monday informing them of the news, the company owned by Allen.

“He received the diagnosis early this month and has begun chemotherapy,” said Vulcan CEO Jody Allen, Paul’s sister, in a prepared statement. ”Doctors say he has diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, a relatively common form of lymphoma.

“This is tough news for Paul and the family. But for those who know Paul’s story, you know he beat Hodgkin’s a little more than 25 years ago and he is optimistic he can beat this, too.”

Darnell Dockett responded to accusations that he purposely used his elbow to squish Matt Hasselbeck’s throat in Seattle’s loss to Arizona on Sunday via his twitter account.

Dockett: “Dear coach mora, its football (expletive) happens if u ever played the game ud understand, really I would try to hurt matt. He’s a good guy.”

Dockett later tweeted and corrected himself, saying “wouldn’t” instead of “would”.

Jim Moore of Seattlepi.com says he’ll take UW head coach Steve Sarkisian’s reaction to being eliminated from postseason consideration over Seahawks head coach Jim Mora’s comments on Monday.

ESPN’s Mike Sando says Seattle’s biggest issue is a lack of an elite pass rusher, with defensive end Patrick Kerney’s skills eroding.

More Sando: Here’s his column on Sunday’s game against Arizona.

Mike Henderson at Crosscut thinks it’s time for the Seahawks to go through an overhaul similar to what the Mariners went through after Bill Bavasi was let go.

KJR’s Hugh Millen and Ian Furness discuss Sunday’s game from a hard-core football perspective in this audio link.

The Seahawks open up as 11-point underdogs against Minnesota.

Hope he gets well and maintains ownership of the team.

  2. Wow…I’m pretty bummed to here that about Paul. Though, it sounds like he has at least a 60% chance of being cured. He’ll have the finest doctors and access to whatever treatments he needs, so he may have an even better chance than the “average”.

    Outlook for high grade lymphomas
These lymphomas generally need more intensive treatment than the low grade types. But they often respond well to treatment. Many people are cured. The most common type of high grade lymphoma is diffuse large B cell lymphoma. About 31 in 100 of all lymphomas diagnosed (31%) are this type.

It is difficult to be specific about likely outcome, as there are so many different types of high grade lymphoma. And they do not all behave the same way. Generally speaking, about 6 out of 10 people (60%) are cured.

  3. Obviously, the #1 priority is to hope Mr. Allen gets better. Life/death/sickness stuff is always more important than a game (granted, some of us take this “game” pretty seriously… perhaps too seriously). I have appreciated him so much and hope to have him around for a long time. It will be a dark day when he’s not in charge anymore (a LONG way down the road). I don’t really want to think of the ‘Hawks after Matt, nor do I want to think of the team after Mr. Allen. I have these terrible Ken Behring fears whenever I think of Mr. Allen not owning this team anymore.

Speaking of owners and NOT to make light of Paul Allens condition.. Did any of you see this happen?

  5. Dukeshire says:

Yes, I saw that yesterday and haven’t been able to stop laughing. An 86 year old owner, flipping the bird, double barrel, to the Bills and their 92 year old owner, Ralph Wilson; absolutely classic.

  6. Just a quick shout to Mr. Allen that I hope everything goes well. It’s a shame that it takes something of this magnitude to bring me to the point of saying how much i appreciate all you have done for sports in the Northwest in particular, but also everyday life in general. The fact that I’m able to send this message is in large part due to your efforts and genius. So, belatedly, thank you Mr. Allen.

I’d also like to say “Live long and prosper” but you’ve already nailed the latter, and I certain will show just as well with the former.

From my family to yours, we wish you all the best.

  7. God bless and heal quickly Mr Allen.

  8. FireRuskellNow says:

Paul Allen is the best thing to happen to this franchise. Here’s to a complete recovery.

  9. seahawklovertoo says:

Mr.Allen, You have already made this world better. Now, it is the time to take care of Your-self. Good luck.

  10. BobbyAyala says:

    Get well soon, Mr. Allen.

  11. Prayers to your fight Mr Allen… Many of us here stunned with this announcement…
Know that we aren’t just printing words… We care and there will be many of us that do not know how to express our caring into words… Please don’t have a doubt… We care a lot….

  12. bulldog80 says:

God bless you and your family Mr. Allen. Keep fighting and know that you’re in our prayers.
