There’s been a lot of talk about giving 1st downs on 3rd and long. Yesterday, the Lions were 6-16 on 3rd overall. On their opening drive they converted a 3rd and 6 (out of shotgun to Johnson for 13). Then on 3rd and 20 gave up 18 yards (shotgun again, Pettigrew) and went for it on 4th and 2 but Seattle had 12 on the field, automatic 1st. All that led to a missed FG. The next possession there were no 3rd downs. (2 plays, TD) On the third possession the scored a 29 yard TD on 3rd and 10. Aside from the TD, they didn’t convert a 3rd down longer than 6 yards. (and that was twice on the opening drive) After watching the game, it seems impossible, but that’s how I read the game log.
