Like him or not, T.J. Houshmandzadeh is a must listen on his interviews because you really never know what he’s going to say, but also because he is highly entertaining, often thoughtful and has a great perspective toward football and life.
Today was no different. He stopped in mid-answer of a question to look at a young radio reporter holding a mic and said, “Man, you look young, How old are you?”
The kid, mortified, stammered, “I’m 19.”
And then Housh went back to answering questions.
He certainly didn’t cut any corners when it came to keeping the win over Detroit in some perspective.
“I think we had that confidence, but don’t take anything away from Detroit. They weren’t very good last year, and I think that played a role in guys having the confidence that we had. We can’t spot teams that have better records those type of leads because I don’t know if the confidence would be there, where guys know we’re going to come back and win. But I felt when we were down 17-0, we were still going to win the game. That’s how I honestly felt on the sideline.”
So Housh isn’t afraid to remind people that Detroit is awful. And he did so a few more times.
“I thought we were going to win. It could be that we’re playing Detroit, and I think everybody had that confidence. Can we have that same confidence when we get down to a good team, that we’re still going to come back and win? But I felt like we were going to win. I was just like, ‘Wow,’ one of those [feelings], like, ‘Wow, are you serious?’ But I honestly felt like we were going to win the game.”
He didn’t give himself too much credit for the TD catch either.
“It was easy, man. I think everybody here probably could’ve caught that. That’s like a system touchdown, man. Matt just threw the ball, I just fell down and caught the ball.”
Here’s some more quotes from some random players
Marcus Trufant …
(On if he was back at 100% this weekend…) “Well I am always trying to get better every week. In practice I am just trying to get better. This was my first time playing the full game. I am still trying to get better, I am never satisfied.”
(On how important the Arizona game is…) “It’s very important. Any time you’re going against a division opponent it’s always big. It’s just like every other game, you have to fight hard and play until the end.”
(On if this game felt different than last week…) “It felt a little better for me. Every play I play and every practice I do I get better and better. It felt good.”
Brandon Mebane
(On what was different today about the defensive line’s ability to get pressure on the Lions’ offense…) “Well, it wasn’t different. We just had to…get pressure on the young quarterback, so our backfield and everybody could make plays. We just got to cause pressure and it helps people make plays.”
(On how the defense was able to stay focused and come back…) “Really, we didn’t doubt ourselves. We were still in the game. We conduct ourselves as professionals, and we just hung in there, believed in each other. That’s what we’re starting to really do: believe in each other. And we just played hard for each other. That’s all we can do.”
Deon Grant
(On if we will see more of this…) “Oh definitely, we have to. If you don’t have a base core of a defense you really don’t have anything. You want to blitz and cover one and the whole thing. Teams are going to find a way to pick you apart. We need what we did today to be like that for the rest of the year.”
(On when he felt the momentum swing…) “When we first went out there. We just knew that we had to show up today. They had their first drive and they missed a field goal. When the offense turned the ball over we knew that we still had the game, we just gave them a touchdown. We knew where the defense was at, it was still a long day.”
(On his interception…) “I just did what the coaches taught me to do. I just read my keys and went back there and I caught the ball. I had missed so many balls in practice so I had to make sure that I caught this one.”
Cory Redding
(On the mindset headed into the game…) “We’ve been having adversity this whole year. We had a little discussion last night with Gus [Bradley] and he told us that when you’re down people throw dirt on you and you have to shake it off. No matter how bad it looks just keep fighting and that’s what we did today. Down seventeen points we could have given up, but we didn’t, we stuck in there and made more plays than they did.”
(On how mentally tough the team is…) “We stayed focused and poised and we believe in one another. Right now this is all we got. Our backs are against the fall and we have let a lot of games go away. We still have a ways to go. As long as we continue to stay focused and win, things should be looking good for us. Everybody needs to stay focused and poised and keep coming out week in and week out giving our hearts.”
(On if turnovers come in bunches…) “Hopefully. Turnovers, sacks and all that good stuff comes in bunches. I think today we took advantage of the young rookie quarterback and we tried to disguise a lot of things and show our hand a little bit. We tried to rattle him as best we could and I believe we made a lot of plays in the back because of that.”
David Hawthorne
(On what was working for him on his interceptions…) “Just knowing the looks. It’s pretty much the same looks that they gave us all week in practice. Then when it happened in the game, it was just that much easier because we’d worked it so much. I just had to step up and have a good finish.”
(On whether he could see the difference in the way the team stepped up to the challenge this week as opposed to previous weeks…) “Oh, yeah. Our backs are against the wall, so we had to come out swinging, you know? We made it a point of emphasis this week to come out and try to start fast, although we didn’t start as fast as we could’ve. But I mean, the tempo, everything about practice this week was a little bit different because we have that backs-against-the-wall kind of feeling.”
(On when he knew that the defense was starting to rattle Matthew Stafford…) “Probably when he threw his first couple interceptions. He’s a young quarterback, and our game plan was to try to distract him. He’s going to be a good quarterback in this league and I feel like he is a good quarterback, but I think our game plan worked today.”
(On what kinds of tips Lofa Tatupu gave him this week…) “Lofa, man, this week he was just telling me to be myself, go out there and be a leader and lead by example. He feels like my style of play is bringing people along more so than just all the talking and all of that stuff. This week, his focus was just letting me go, going out and lead by example.”
Whatever. We almost lost to the damn Lions.

The only real points the lions scored were off of stupid turnovers. Int and fumble take them away, this is a nbowout.

Prove it on the road. Just once, win a game against a good opponent in their house.

Hell, win a game against a bad opponent on the road. We haven’t won a road game yet.

I found myself thinking the seahawks suck. They better put on big boy pants next week.

This is why I almost always stop posting this time of year. The team WON yesterday! A win is a win is a win. And I come on here and all I read is the team sucks, they beat a bad team, they are still terrible…
If that’s what you think of the Seahawks GO AWAY and root for someone else.

An article on ESPN about the Browns saying their going to call Holmgren to run the team. Just thought some might enjoy it. Others might cry about it.

Right on chuck_easton, thats how I feel. You should hear them during the live chats.

I”m with you, Chuck. Don’t stop posting. We beat an NFL team that was hungry for a win. The Lions could have beat most of the teams in the NFL yesterday, they played one of their better games.
One throwing error by Matt = 7 points. One fumble by Griffith = 7 points. Other than that, we dominated for three quarters. Also, note that last time we got down by 17 points (Cardinals), we were beaten the remaining three quarters 3-10. This game, we made mistakes and got down by 17 and then played the remaining three quarters 32-3. Not bad at all. Our team showed we have the toughness to come back from adversity.
I don’t care whether fans like Mora or Ruskell or not. Our players on the field have talent and guts and heart and they showed it.

Well, in fairness to those who feel this team “still sucks” or is “still terrible” after a win, they are operating under the impression that they are built to win now. This is clearly not the case, despite beliefs to the contrary prior to the season. If the pieces were all in place to compete in January, yesterday’s win would be rather alarming or a wake up call at best; 3 fumbles (lost 1), 6 penalties against a team with 1 win (including 12 men on field that kept a scoring drive alive), 55 yards rushing, gave up an ave of 5.4 per rush, inability to control clock,, etc… Point being, it was a sloppy performance by a team that started very slowly again. They have look thoroughly unprepared to play when the game starts several times this year. However, this team is not ready to compete in January. They are (in my view) 2 good offseasons and drafts away. There are holes at critical positions (o-line, safety, running back, DT). All of that said, there were bright spots and there is a young, talented corp they will continue to build around. Yes, a win is a win and this team isn’t in a position to take them for granted, but not all wins are the same and this game does not have a satisfying feeling.

The more I see the Offense the more I hate it. I did like the decision to go 4th and 1 but the play calling sucks, come on run a short yardage play with 1 back? We have two good blocking FB’s and we run with 1 back. STUPID, with our HOF line we expect to make short yardage with 1 back. Maybe its time to bring in a Defensive player in the bakfield to go in and destroy someone with a block to show how its done(too much of a gimmick) (but a hey guys your jobs in jeopardy)
We can’t run the ball at all. Too many sideways plays for 0 yards, the game is won by gaining yards not going sideways or backwards.
HEY TIMMAY, ITS THE O LINE STUPID!!! FIX IT
I did like the fight in the team and that they didn’t mail it in this time after going down 17 AGAIN.
We cant start games down 17 in 5 minutes and expect to win very many. At least it was the Lions.
Still think our special teams suck but had a couple of nice returns and defensively need a lot of work too many yards given up to every team we play. Our D has the pieces but the playcalling again sucks.
QUIT the soft zone crap, MAN UP, Play Some Defense.
Every team has picked us apart all year with our wonderful give them what they want zone.
Was it me or early on did it look like our safety and cb let passes for scores just get there with no fight? Sure looked like tyhey just let the ball get there without trying to knock it down. I was at the game so maybe it was the angle but man swing an arm in there at least try to knock it out.
With all the woes I still think we have a chance at the division, but its very slight. Have to beat the TARDS yes they still are the TARDS and we need to Win a stinking road game.
HEY MORRA pack up the team load them on busses and drive to Phoenix starting today, stop at no where High Schools and Practice on the way High elevation ones, run some burners in practice, camp in tents or crappy hotels, these guys have it too easy, change up the routine it has not worked for 10 years now.
This would help to unify the team and maybe put a little fight back to the team, I think right now there is a little people playing for themselves over team going on.
Any way I’m on happy pills from my knee surgury Friday

KC cut their RB L.Johnson today. I know he was less productive and disgruntled
this year. Is he worth going after and putting-up with the hissy-fits by Seattle homosexual community ?
No matter what, i don’t care about JJ and can’t see him as our RB any longer bad OL or not. Maybe L.J. can “tie us up” for the next 1 to 2 years until we can draft somebody that is worth paying top money. Besides Engram from the Alabama , I don’t see anything else that is so exceptional in the college right now.
Obviously, I disagree with BobbyK about J.Best (RB @ Cal)and wasting a high pick on him. I’d rather spend 5th round pick on (re-instated)RB Blount from Oregon , or that “white-boy”tank from Stanford that rushed for 220+ yards against the Ducks (when Best couldn’t get even 70 yards against Oregon or USC).
The Troll has spoken !

Personally I don’t think Larry Johnson is the answer. JJ is a good reciever out of the backfield, but as a pure runner, a lot of flash but no gas.Give the ball to Forsett and or Rankin lets see if they can make a differance. Matt needs a running game to help keep the defense off of his back. A win against the Cards next week, would be very sweet.

Thanks for the answer Wernie, I share Your hope about Rankin.

LJ was a product of the dominant Chiefs OL. After Roaf, Shields, etc. left town… they became terrible (that’s funny, OL = potent attack)… Behind the ‘Hawks OL, LJ won’t do anything more than JJ or Forsett.
× Flag comment
BobbyK, neither would Adrian Peterson or Chris Johnson… in my opinion at least.
× Flag comment
They have released Duckett and James and brought Rankin aboard in an effort, at least in part, to see what they have moving forward. Johnson is a step backward, is this particular situation. He’s not coming to Seattle.
× Flag comment
KC cut Johnson because he’s not the player he once was. When guys in any pro sport are still producing, teams fall all over themselves to figure out reasons and excuses to keep them playing.
I really like what Forsett brings to the team. He’s such a good bet to make the first guy miss on those short passes – and he’s our only shifty runner.
I look at this game as a solid recovery from a ridiculous start – it was crazy to again dig ourselves that kind of hole, and it’s a nice sign that we came back and dominated the way we did. It’s against a lousy team – but it’s still definitely a positive.
One personal note – went to Vegas this weekend with friends and for all of us bettors – with the seahawks giving up 10 pts, and up by 5 with less than a minute to play – man, you should have seen us go crazy when Wilson returned that INT for a TD . . .a play meaningless to everyone but the gamblers.
