It’s official. As first reported by Aaron Fentress of The Oregonian, Mike Hass has been signed off the Seahawks practice squad to the active roster. In order to make room for Hass, the team released veteran running back Edgerrin James.
The Seahawks also made another roster move, releasing safety C.J. Wallace and signing safety Jamar Adams off the practice roster.
The Seahawks needed to add a receiver with WR Ben Obomanu’s oblique injury. Seahawks head coach Jim Mora told reporters on Monday that Obomanu would have the injury evaluated further.
Hass appears on an active roster for the second time in his career. The Oregon State product, in his fourth season in the league, spent the entire 2007 on the Chicago Bears’ active roster but played in just one game.
Hass looked good during training camp, and does a nice job of working the seams of a zone defense. If he’s active, Hass likely will be used as mostly a special teams player.
James struggled during his time with Seattle, rushing for 125 yards on 46 carries for a pedestrian 2.7 yards per carry. Players praised him as a good locker room influence, but on the field James looked a step slow, which is ironic because the team released T.J. Duckett and signed James for that very same reason.
James eclipsed Marcus Allen and moved to 10th on the league’s all-time rushing list with 12,246 yards.
With James gone, a spot in the running back rotation has been opened up for Louis Rankin, who the team signed to the active roster last week to apparently protect him from being signed by another team.
They also release Edge today.

I wonder when Colin Cole will be released, that guy is useless. All he does is take playing time away from Red Bryant

It’s not like Red Bryant is any good either.

If Adams is signed then Wallace must be headed to the IR.

The James/Milloy signings were a bit baffling in the first place. We bring in two vets who hadn’t gone through our (or any) training camp, hadn’t been working in the system, and figure they will contribute? We knew the RB situation was bad coming into training camp and yet all we did was wait until it was over to add a guy who is a year older and not in football shape? That didn’t make sense. And it’s not like we didn’t already know Duckett was bad.
× Flag comment
If James was brought in to be a steady veteran guy and a stopgap if JJ got hurt – then i’m not sure in what respect he failed to fulfill that role. Meaning that, the reasons they cut him, seemed pretty self-evident on the day they signed him. And, at least as far as we know, he was a decent locker room guy, and not a whiner about playing time or a lack of touches. I’m not a huge fan of the guy or anything, but this strikes me as a bit of a bush league move . . .
× Flag comment
Yes, I was more baffled by the James signing than the Duckett. And I NEVER understood the Duckett signing. I’m excited to see what Rankin will do.
I’ve been looking for official confirmation Adams has been signed (to take Wallace’s place?) .

Another day when the long term plan of the front office is clear. Oh wait, I mean another day when the front office looks like they have no clue. Sign a high profile vet so you can cut him five weeks later, can’t Liewike fire Ruskell now?
× Flag comment
Baffled officially…
Fire TR now please.. Quit reminding us that he is a numb-skull.
The Edge signing was odd in its timing, but not as odd as the timing of the release of Duckett ( I would agree). Add that to the pile of reasons to get rid of TR. Our OL problems have been so bad, I forgot how bad the RB situation is..
I think it is clear, after Sunday, we are officially experimenting, prepping for the draft..
× Flag comment
The FO does look to be in way over their heads. How much of Paul Allen’s money have they wasted on bad signings and having to eat guaranteed and pro-rated money on discarded players? I think TR is history and while I love Holmy for what he did for this team, I am not sure he is the answer either.
× Flag comment
I see RB this way: Now that Forsett has shown that what he’s done in preseason can translate to the regular, he is the clear #2, which makes Edge even less valuable. Rankin not only is younger and has an upside he is far more versatile with his ability to return punts / kicks. Are any of these long term answers? Likely no.
× Flag comment
“Sign a high profile vet so you can cut him five weeks later, can’t Liewike fire Ruskell now?”
exactly.
× Flag comment
I wouldn’t call it experimenting. I’d call it getting rid of players who don’t perform. Edge looked good in the playoffs last year so they tried him out here.
It didn’t work out. He’s gone. Hasselbeck said that everybody’s been put on notice. Don’t play hard/perform ~ You”re gone.
× Flag comment
I don’t understand the bitching here. If the complaints are regarding Ruskell’s approach to the position to start the season, that’s one thing. (Although it’s been pretty well understood RB would be addressed in earnest after ’09) But to complain about purging underperforming players when the team is struggling makes you out to look like a contrarian, and little more.
× Flag comment
Mocarob – maybe experimentation is a little harsh. Maybe better they are scrambling for a solution. Personally, I look forward to the time this season when they’ll shut Hass down, and give Teal a try out in a real game situation. We need to know if Teal has what it takes before next draft; though as far as we know, they may have already evaluated him.
× Flag comment
Duke – Who’s bitching? Far as I am concerned, they can sit them all. Under performing? Who said anything about under performing? If it isnt obvious, this team sucks. There are so few stand-outs that we wouldnt be able to play on Sunday if we sat/fired the under performers. Personally- I dont think it is the guys. Coaching/Scheme maybe – I dont know. But the coaches need a shake up as well.
× Flag comment
Bird – You mean to tell me that there isn’t bitching going on? My comments don’t apply to everyone, of course. And I’m sure there will be a shake up to some extent, at seasons end, to the coaching staff.

Sometimes I wonder if we made a deal with the devil to get 2005.
We take an average to below average GM who made above average moves to take this team to the Super Bowl. And now, just to bring his record back to his skill level, he has to make a massive amount of below average to awful moves which we are now paying for as fans.
When does it finish averaging out is what I want to know!
× Flag comment
I don’t understand why everyone is baffled. Is anyone watching these games? Edge is practically a mirror image to JJ. They brought in edge as a security blanket to JJ. They have both been given an equal oppurtunity to produce with JJ winning in a very lackluster fashion. Hence Edge has been cut.
Enter the test phase of forsett seeing more time sprinkled in with a rankin here and there.
Confused about the other signings? Everyone we cut was no contributing a thing on special teams. Everyone we signed can contribute. Jamar Adams will probably be a gunner and Roy Williams was a special team stud in Pittsburgh.
You idiots blast Ruskell day in and day out. Only with the recent speculation by professional analysts and radio personalities to bring Holmgren back do you bring to the table another option.
I have said it time and time again. If you are calling for Ruskells head why don’t you post some other options we could use at GM. And since you arm chair GMs are so wise why don’t you use an original thought instead of piggybacking on the analysts and personalities. Oh because you don’t know!!!!

It would be a mistake to fire Ruskell now, for this reason only: If you want to attract good candidates for the GM position, you want to show that you’ve got stable ownership who won’t mess around with the GM. Maybe Synder and Jones can get away with that, but they own premier, glamor franchises. Seattle isn’t one of those. The attraction here is hands-off ownership combined with deep pockets.
However, ownership should be starting their GM investigations now, and making inquries. So rumors about Ruskell replacements should start to filter out within a month or two, if not sooner, depending on how tight-lipped the front office is.
They shouldn’t wait too long because the new GM will want to evalulate the coaching staff and assemble replacements ASAP if they deem it necessary. Wait too long and you end up in a Raider-like situation where they have no viable candidates.
Alluding to the other threads, it appears that Ruskell hasn’t picked up nearly enough difference-makers. Unlike many, I don’t think he’s busted on that many picks, but he hasn’t hit it big on enough of them either.
Seattle has a lot of guys who “aren’t the reason they’re losing”, but not enough guys who “are the reason they’re winning.” In other words, mediocrity.
× Flag comment
If only there was a way the NFL would apologize to us for ’05 by giving us an extra 2-3 picks in the 2nd round this year. That’s about what we need to get younger and talented players without breaking the bank. I see so many positions that would be nice to use on a 2nd or 3rd rounder and let them develop (while helping the team as rookies too).
I’d love to add a RB. A WR with TJ being older and Burly going into a FA season next year and Branch almost certainly gone. And about 50 OL. A few DL and DB would be nice too.
× Flag comment
One more thing, even if their playoff hopes are slim, it would be utterly wrong for them to bench Hasselbeck and go into “pre-season” QB evaluation mode.
Not only would that be an insult to season ticket holders who are paying big bucks for the tickets, it’s telling the rest of the team that they’ve given up on the season already and there’s nothing to play for. Completely bad message to send, bad for players and bad for ownership.
Mora was right in that respect – the starters have to battle it out until the end, and the players that do well are the guys Seattle can build with. The front-runner types can be disposed of.

For the Ruskell defenders, does anyone realize what it means that the franchise has sunk to depths not seen since the 1992-1993 seasons and previously seen only in the expansion years? The 1992-1992 teams won just 8 games while the 2008-2009 teams are at 6, thanks to 3 against the Rams. The 2008-2009 Rams are among the worst teams of this decade!
The 1992 team lost 6 games by 14+ points. The 2009 edition is already at 3, with games at Houston, Minnesota, Arizona and Green Bay left. We can beat the 1992 team for futility. I sat through and watched most of the games in 1992. I never thought I would see anything like it again.
I would love to get the Dennis Erickson years back. At least the Seahawks went on the road and faced Super Bowl contenders like the Jets, Broncos and Chiefs and played close games that went until the final few minutes. With that kind of mediocrity, at least I believed the team could beat anyone at any place. Now I just hope they keep it within 20!
× Flag comment
HawksKD – I understand your frustration but you seem like Ruskell in disguise and frantic about losing your job. Kind of a weird post.

We should have started the year with Morris and Forsett, with Weaver at FB and Duckett for short yardage only.
× Flag comment
HawksSD – LMAO! I agree with you.
Hard to believe anyone would bitch about moves like this. These moves have nothing to do with Edge being a good RB or not. Edge was an insurance policy in case Jones or Forsett had any health issues this year, which they have not. These moves are about Special Teams.
Our offense and defense are getting healthy and improving, while our Special Teams is really struggling. Losing CJ and Obo hurts that unit. Mora is concerned about this and is taking action. Good for him.

“Hard to believe anyone would bitch about moves like this. These moves have nothing to do with Edge being a good RB or not. Edge was an insurance policy in case Jones or Forsett had any health issues this year, which they have not. These moves are about Special Teams.”
Well, that’s an angle I hadn’t considered – if you’re saying that they’re trading Edge’s spot for someone who can contribute on ST, I suppose there’s some logic on that.
My complaint was that Edge has basically filled the role they brought him in here to do – I don’t really think he’s been any better or worse than anyone could reasonably have expected, and as I noted, he seemed to be a decent veteran locker-room guy. And when you’re dealing with a guy who has had the career he has, that does count for something in my opinion, and so don’t cut him mid-year unless he’s been something other than as advertised.
But, if the logic is that our ST have been weak, and we needed a young body to help out there – I get that.
× Flag comment
That’s a good point. Edge wasn’t going to help much on special teams. If the team were more competitive, they might still need the James insurance policy. At this point though, he’s too much of a luxury. In a sense, this could be the 1st step of “seeing who they have for next year.”
Also, they may have more confidence now in Forsett as a pass blocker. Short yardage isn’t much of a consideration – given the performance of the offense, I think they’d *love* to be in the position of not being able to punch it in on 3rd and 1. They’d actually at least be in a 3rd and 1 situation.

Pabuwal as constant ruskell attacker you seem pretty knowledgeable about football. Or you are a great googler. Who would you to bring in as a GM.
Serious question.
I am satisfied with both Holmy and Ruskell. They were both above average GM with decent talent evaluation. The only person I can think of besides the obvious pioli and polian who obviously aren’t going anywhere is a.j smith I have no idea what his current status is but he seems to be able to spin deals, hard nose vets, and has a great team of talent evaluators.
He is the only person I would want up here. If not, retain ruskell or bring back holmgren only if he is here primarily as GM.
Ruskell has still proved he can put his focus on a unit and improve it with an immediate impact. He has not totally neglected our OL but he has overlooked it. This along with the numerous scheme changes and adjustments are the reason that the hawks are in a tailspin.

That is a terrific comparison. Thank you for posting it. Although I found their grading system simply baffling, it definitely provides a good side by side.
× Flag comment
Thanks for that link to the Chris Cluff article.
That article does not tell the whole story and gives some low grades to both Ruskell and Holmgren without backing up those grades.
For example, in 2005, Ruskell inherited a defense on the verge of collapse, along with alcoholics Robinson, Stevens, Simmons, and Terry sinking up the locker room. He drafted Lofa Tatupu and Leroy Hill, signed Joe Jurevicious, Bryce Fisher, Andre Dyson, and Chuck Darby, who all helped turn the team around from 9-7 to 13-3. For all that, the writer gives him a grade of only “b-minus”? WTF.
Its easy to blame the record on the GM, but the players and coaches ahve some responsibility for winning and losing last I checked. Also, the GM has a lot of jobs running the football operation besides just presiding over the draft. Our draft board is put together by Player Personnel Director Ruston Webster, Regional Scouting Directors Fitterer and Yowarsky, and their scouting staffs, and approved by Ruskell, its not all one guy.
× Flag comment
Unlike most people here, I thought that Ruskell had a very solid offseason this year. I still refuse to take him to task for the massive number of injuries on the O-line.
But, I don’t think he hit very well on the ’09 free agent signings. He paid #1 receiver money for a possession receiver (yet another WR signing mistake) and I don’t see much from Redding or Cole. He did better with rookie free agents, actually. So I’m not sure about the B+ grade for 2009.
Also shows what training camp and pre-season reports are really worth. Redding was supposed to be totally dominant in camp – unless he’s hurt now, apparently it must have been due to the competition he faced…
× Flag comment
That’s like giving Holmgren an A- in 2001 for what they proclaim: “This was the offseason in which Holmgren built the core of his eventual Super Bowl offense,”. How can that been seen then as anything but an A. Or Ruskell’s ’06 draft class (Jennings, Tapp, Sims, Obo still here and contributors) a D. Huh?
× Flag comment
Freedom – With due respect, Ruskell received a lot of praise here, for his moves this past offseason, prior to the season. He had his detractors of course, but the pitchforks didn’t come out for most until the Arizona game. (After the Cowboys game the torches have been lit.)
× Flag comment
Personally, I like Holmgren better than Ruskell. That’s my main reason for wanting him here. I think he brings credibility and class to the organization. There’s a reason he’s so well respected around the league.
But I think Ruskell is a better evaluator of talent. And unlike many bloggers, I fully support the character stuff.
As KD has said, who is better and who should be given the job? It’s always easier to proclaim we want to get rid of people… but the real job getting it right. I hope our GM next season is either Holmgren or Ruskell. If Holmy comes back to take over, I hope he gets a 5-year deal. I do not support a 5-year deal for Ruskell (more like a year or two). No matter who our GM is for ’10 b/w Holmy or Ruskell… we all know their first 5 years of GM will better prepare them for ’10. However, the case against Ruskell is that this is his team, his players, his coaches, etc. and look where we are. It’s not a pretty site.
Adding to what KD said… think about the revolutionary people around the world… all they seem to want to do is kill, kill, kill… Once they have achieved victory and it’s time to set up a stable government, well, they have no plan and the cycle repeats itself when they are overthrown by another revolutionary group who is sick of the current regime.

Never understood the James signing after the release of Duckett. Rankin looked pretty good with Oakland in the pre-season, Jamar Adams looked bad here in the pre-season. Isn’t that why he was released and they signed Lawyer Mathusala?
That Bleacher Report link was pretty interesting. Pretty obvious who he was talking about in saying “The players who shoot their mouth off and don’t fight every game definitely won’t be back after the season.” You listening T.J.?
Now if Hass can just get some playing time we’d probably see more out of him than we have from Houshmandzadeh so far.
Since when is it up to fans to suggest GM candidates to the owner and team president/CEO? I presume that Paul Allen is paying attention these days to his mulit-hundred million dollar investment, and so is presumably the CEO. Ruskell is in the last year of his contract and won’t be extended, not if those two have more functioning brain cells than Peter Griffin. If I’m in their position I’m scouring the list of the other teams front office guys, especially the successful franchises like New England, Indianapolis, Philadelphia, Giants, New Orleans, etc looking for candidates to replace Numbskull. I don’t doubt that is going on now. Frankly I think the entire coaching staff needs to be flushed along with Ruskell. As for the kool-aid tasting bad, most people here were drinking the kool-aid and saying “we’re going to win the division” and “we’re going to the Super Bowl” when I was saying this was a 5-11 team and getting blasted for it. I agree that there’s no point in firing Ruskell at this point, let his contract expire at the end of the season and give him a bus ticket back to Atlanta, and tell him to take Mora and Knapp with him.

Christ BobbyAyala. Holmgren isn’t exactly the best GM candidate, either. I can think of maybe 2-3 good, standout players he drafted during his tenure as HC/GM. (Hutch and Alecander for 2) and you act like the head coach has nothing to do with drafting and building a team.
× Flag comment
BobbyAyala, I have not said that GM Ruskell should be retained after the season. Perhaps he should be replaced. That’s to be assessed after 16 games.
What I’ve done is point out that many criticisms of Ruskell in comments here are often wrong. He is often accused here by fans who don’t know much about football or GMs.
Its popular here to accuse our GM of anything one is pissed off about, whether he did it or not. Ruskell did not get five offensive lineman injured this year. He didn’t get Hasselbeck injured. He didn’t get Tru or Hill injured. Yet it is exactly those things that snowballed to lead to the Seahawks being 2-5.
Do I think Ruskell’s staff built a Seahawks roster with enough talent to climb out of that ditch? Yes. Do I think we can still make the playoffs? No. I think the early season injuries already killed our chances. Take away just half those injuries and we would be 4-3 and moving toward the playoffs.
The team that Ruskell tried to put on the field (minus left tacke) can be judged next Sunday and then in Phoenix. Those of you who have given up already probably won’t be there. See ya. Don’t let the door hit you in the butt on the way out.
If you are there, and you see Ruskell run on the field and fumble the ball, blame him. if you see him taking out players’ knees with a lead pipe, Tonya-harding style, blame him. Or, if you see our players not playing as hard as they should, or looking unprepared, then for God’s sake blame the players and their coaches; that’s their jobs, not the GM’s job.

Excellent post, as usual…though, it sounds to me like you’re making excuses for Ruskell.
If our “high character” guys are just going through the motions, it’s reasonable to blame the coaches for not being able to motivate them, right? So, who do you blame for hiring coaches who can’t motivate their players? Or, for drafting players who won’t respond to adversity and good coaching?
I think there is plenty of blame to go around, and everyone on this team, including the management, needs to be held accountable.

Never mind that many of the potential GM candidates are still with existing teams and can’t leave until the season is over. Never mind that firing Ruskell now wouldn’t actually do anything at this time anyway, other than tell the world we have an impulsive owner with the attention span of a pinhead “fan.”
Why don’t you just call Mr. Allen and tell him you’re holding your breath until he fires Ruskell? That’s the type of brilliant logic and thinking right up your alley. Or kick your dog instead. It will have the same positive effect. Of course you’re probably already done that.
