Ravens Seahawks Football

Here’s the nuts and bolts from today’s press conference.

Seahawks head coach Jim Mora said after further evaluation that linebacker Leroy Hill’s groin injury is more significant than initially thought, and he will be out until the at least the bye week, which comes on Sunday, Oct. 25.

That means Hill will be available at the earliest for Seattle’s Nov. 1 trip to Dallas.

Mora said Hill injured his groin during the first part of Sunday’s game when he got a wide base and was pulled into an awkward position. Mora also said the injury could be a possible tear or some possible pull off the bone of one of the tendons, similar to an injury a lot of hockey players get.

Mora said Hill could potentially need surgery.

As we reported on Monday, Will Herring will fill in at outside backer for Hill.

Offensive tackle Walter Jones (knee) is expected to practice today, and center Chris Spencer (quad) will practice tomorrow, Mora said. Whether or not either will play on Sunday will not be decided until later this week.

Mora said Lofa Tatupu (hamstring) should be ready for Sunday, but will not practice today.

In player moves, Mora confirmed the team dropped center Blake Schlueter and added offensive lineman Brian De La Puente. Also, as we earlier reported, the Seahawks added Derek Walker to the practice squad and dropped safety Jamar Adams to make room.

Deion Branch (hamstring) will not practice today, but potentially tomorrow, Mora said. The plan moving forward for the team is to see where Branch is at come game time and figure out if he’s ready to go.

  1. “hello, franchise player – here’s some money.”
“uh oh, i’m afraid i’ve been injured. thanks for the dump truck full of money, though.”

  2. Soggybuc says:

Will the news on Hill sucks. I’m confident that Herring is more than capable of holding the fort.

  3. hawkdawg206 says:

That’s too bad for Hill, but also expected. I don’t even know if he ever played a 16 game season yet. Hopefully he heals up and doesn’t require major surgery. If Herring played the way he played in Preseason and in the Rams game, we will be fine.

Also, too bad for Adams. We do have too many safeties on the team. He was a big hitter, but never got the chance to be on the field when it counts.

  4. Dukeshire says:

Yes airbags, he intentially tore his groin. Oh and by the way, he’s now under contract.

That is awful news but what an opportunity for Herring. And exciting about Walt. Hopefully he’ll be able to play a something close to his usual level.

  5. That’s too bad. At least it’s not a season-ender. Glad D.D. was available too to give us depth.

Injuries suck . . .hope they’re not our downfall again this year.

  6. Soggybuc says:

Groin pulls were my bane back in the thought i was good at playing football days. I get what Mora meant by the hockey player thing. human legs are not very good at going sideways, groin injuries hurt like like hell.

  7. mindnbrad says:

“Nuts and bolts” about the groin injury. Really?

  8. Attention Jim Mora!
Do not, I repeat, DO NOT let Deion Branch play against the Niners. Even if he says he’s feeling fine and looks to be running at top speed, he will not be fully healed and his hammy will probably snap in two on the first drive. We have a lot a wide receiver and I don’t get the reasoning behind potentially wasting even more money on Branch by rushing him back into the fray.

  9. dukeshire, i’m sorry. i failed to include the proper html end tags.

    [/sarcasm]

  10. nightwulf says:

    Soggy,
I feel your pain…(been there myself, and the damn thing wasn’t right for another dozen years…) The realists among us knew that Hill was going to miss part of the season at some point, he just plays too hard for his body to hold up. Thank god we’ve got starter quality back ups there:)
    Masterk,
    I’m right there with ya:)

  11. griffincsb says:

anyone heard about this Ty Law stuff? saw it on Adam Schefter’s twitter:

Nothing to Ty Law-to-Seattle speculation. Ty Law will go somewhere, but it’s hard to go to Seattle when he hasn’t even heard from Seahawks.

is this a possibility at all, or just talk?

  12. nmseafan says:

I liked what Mora said, in his conference, about using the “Senecat” play in last week’s game. His comment about being A DC and wasting time trying to account for all the possible “out of the box” offensive plays the opposing team may or may not use on any given Sunday. He called it wasting time chasing “ghosts” and how that is a good thing to show as an Offense to cause opposing DC’s to chase “ghosts” causing valuable time to be lost in team preparation for those possibilities. With Holmy’s aversion to this type of “out of the box” play calling, even to just show the possibility of using it for future opponents, I am wondering why Holmy didn’t see it as being useful if only to throw a wrench in the opposing DC’s game preparation? This kind ot too much strictly “in the box” thinking might be why the Seahawks Offense got bogged down by predictability after 2005. Maybe the “game” was starting to pass by Holmy?

  13. Thinking of the positives (’cause that’s all we can hope for), Herring is better in pass coverage than Hill which will free up Curry to rush the passer even more.

The combination of Lewis on running downs and Herring on passing downs (I think that’s what should happen) should actually be better for the team than stricktly Hill on every down.

We knew he’d miss time like he always does (I don’t count the R year b/c he didn’t start all of it – tough to get hurt if you’re on the bench early on, unless it’s Branch).

  14. freedom_X says:

The fact that Seattle has versatile LB’s make make it unnecessary to sub LB’s based on situation. If SF overloads to a side to try and exploit Herring, they could flip Curry over.

I wonder if Red Bryant will get any action – if Seattle will try to clog the middle up with more big bodies. I’m not sure how capable the 49er passing game is, and if SF just pounds it regardless of situation, they may be able to use the big bodies inside. Possibly the smaller, quicker Reed would sit out in this situation (especially if fewer pass rush situations are expected.)

  15. That’s a great point, freedom. If there ever was a week for Reed to not be active, this is it. However, I think he almost blocked another punt last week and he could be a ST ace in the hole. I’m sure San Fran is going to punt plenty of times on Sunday.

  16. If all you’re going to do it paraphrase the news conference, we can just watch it on Sehawks.com and stop coming here.

GO talk to a Doctor… I play hockey… I’ve never heard of that kind of injury being special to hockey… Press Mora to be better prepared and actually know what the heck is up, I know he’s just playing dumb anyway.. you need to push.

  17. This thread needsmore fire Ruskell posters. Or do they only show up after losses?

  18. Heh…I wasn’t aware there was a quota that had to be reached ;)

The best thing about Mora’s statement regarding the SeneCat (did he really call it that?) is that SF is probably wasting a few more seconds trying to figure out if he’s telling the truth or lying to get them to bite. It would be enough to blow Norman’s circuits.

Holmgren probably never considered this aspect of a trick-play because he’s an offensive-minded coach. He had very little to do with the defensive side of things.
