Defensive backs coach Tim Lewis said that new addition to the secondary Lawyer Milloy will be a backup in the secondary for both Jordan Babineaux and Deon Grant, and that Babineaux will get the start in place of the recently released Brian Russell.
Lewis said he liked what he saw from Milloy during the 35-year-old veterans first day of practice.
Milloy moved well and seemed to pick up the team’s defensive schemes quickly. He saw some time with the scout team, and played some with the first unit in nickel and dime situations. And he also worked with the kickoff unit during special teams period.
“I thought he did a great job,” Lewis said. “He’s very smart. He’s experienced. He’s easy to get him acclimated to our defensive system. We have that Gus Bradley system, and it’s one that requires the safety to be smart, instinctive and a good feel player.”
Milloy said he worked out for Detroit last week and said the Lions made an offer, but once Seattle got into the picture it was a no brainer.
“It’s always a dream, to play for the home team, to play for the team that you’ve been rooting for since you first picked up a football,” he said. “That was always the dream, but it just never had happened like that…This year, I got the opportunity and I’m cherishing it.”
Milloy said he’s been working out and is in pretty good shape, but not football shape. As far as whether or not he’ll be a starter, Lawyer had this to say.
“First of all, when you come to a team in this fashion, you got to respect what the team’s been building,” he said. “You’ve got to respect the players and what they’ve been working for all this time, and that’s what I’m doing now.
“I’m trying to get in, and fit in, and get friendships, and learn the playbook. Everything else will take care of itself. If it’s my job to be a backup, that’s what I have to do. I’ll accept that role.
“As a backup, you’re always pushing to be the starter. It was like that in my rookie year, and it’s going to be like that now. I think the successful people in the NFL were all backups, and when they had their opportunity to get on that field, they made the most of it. That’s why they became starters. It’s almost like it’s come full circle, but I’ve been in this situation before. It was a lot of years ago, but I think I know how to handle it.”
That doesn’t exactly sound like Milloy is giving up on starting in the future, and he shouldn’t. If he pushes to be the starter, then Babineaux will get better and the team benefits.
Babineaux said he’s sad to see fellow teammate Brian Russell go, but also looks forward to the new opportunity.
“I feel great,” Babineaux said. “I’m definitely looking forward to it. It’s going to be a tremendous challenge. It’s a lot on my plate, but I’m ready for the challenge.”
Someone else receiving a new challenge is wide receiver Deion Branch, who worked as a kickoff returner during special teams period. Branch also appeared to suffer an unspecified injury at the end of practice but said he was OK.
Others who did not practice include C.J. Wallace (ribs), Derek Walker (unspecified), Kyle Williams (unspecified), Travis Fisher (hamstring) and T.J. Houshmandzadeh (soreness).
Update: I apologize. I left out that Walter Jones (knee), Marcus Trufant (back) and Chris Spencer (quad) of course did not practice today. We did see Walter Jones after practice and he’s moving around OK. We’ll get an update on Jones on Wednesday. Head coach Jim Mora did not talk to reporters after Monday’s practice.
Nate Burleson finished practice with a nice catch on a fade ball, making the grab between Kelly Jennings and Babineaux.
Milloy will wear No. 36 Jamar Adams is now wearing No. 25, Russell’s old number. Michael Bennett switched from No. 96 to No. 91. Cameron Morrah switch from No. 43 to No. 88. And tight end John Owens switched from No. 46 to No. 86.
The Seahawks also signed linebacker Thomas Williams as the eighth practice squad player. Williams appeared in six games for Jacksonville last year, and was the team’s fifth round draft pick.
Any word on Jones yet?

I assume Jones and Spencer did not practice, since they are not listed, but also have not practiced in forever.

TJ’s “soreness” has been mentioned before. Is it AT ALL serious?
× Flag comment
MOO: No, he likely will practice on Wednesday and should play on Sunday. Guys I updated the post. Jones, Spencer and Trufant did not practice. I did see Jones after practice and he seems to be moving better. We’ll get an update from Mora on Wednesday.

Does anyone know the deal with Courtney Greene? I’m surprised he didn’t make the Practice Squad.

Thanks Eric, great to hear Jones is moving good!

Lawyer Milloy will be a HUGE upgrade at the line of scrimmage and he’s savvy enough to cover his deep half of the field. So overall I think this is a substantial upgrade over what we had.
× Flag comment
If he were savy enough to cover the deep half of his field then the Falcons would have beaten the Cardinals in the Wild Card Game last season. However, you’re right, he’s a huge upgrade at the LOS.

Eric Sez: Branch also appeared to suffer an unspecified injury……
Well, surprise surprise.

Who played tackle on the second unit? Who would we put in the game if Locklear or Willis get hurt during the game this week?
× Flag comment
Branch probably got a hang nail and will be out 3-4 weeks. While rehabbing his pinkie, he’ll probably stub his toe and be out another month. While on crutches from not being able to put weight on his toe, he’ll probably slip on his crutches and bruise his tailbone and be out a few more. While laying in bed to rest that injury, he’ll probably eat some bad food and have reaction which will put him out until Christmas. Other than that, he’ll put up another 1,000 yard season (sarcasm on the 1,000 yard part).
I shouldn’t bash him too much because I was excited when Ruskell traded for him. I thought (wrongly) it was a good move. And he is good when healthy. He’s not a superstar as he’s being paid to be, but he is good (again, when healthy).
Here’s to hoping he stays healthy and has a good year!

Eric-
I never did find it but I guess that fact that the Seahawks claimed three players off waivers and placed them on their PS is a pretty good indication that you can do that.
× Flag comment
They didn’t “claim” anyone and put them on the PS. If you “claim” them you pick up the contract and they are on your roster.
They can only be put on the practice squad AFTER they clear waivers.
× Flag comment
Eric,
Now that the regular season is upon us, how do things change for you as a beat reporter? Are you allowed less access? How do you determine what you can or cannot report from practices?
× Flag comment
I like to hear that Branch is beginning to work at a kick returner. When he was the number one WR he was protected from special teams work while guys like Burleson took the risk. Now, that is reversed. We should protect Burly from getting injured returning punts and we should send Branch in to return kicks and earn his money. He’s got a lot of juke in him and could be a great KR.

Here’s a pretty good definition of the practice squad rules etc.:
“Signing Practice Squad Players
Under the current NFL Practice Squad Rules, any player who is under contract on a scout team is free to sign a player contract with any team in the league, without compensation to the franchise whose practice squad he is a member of. However, the signing must be completed at least six days before the signing team’s next game (10 days in the case of a bye week).
Practice Squad Eligibility
According to league policy, only certain types of players are allowed to sign to the practice squad. Players cannot have played more than nine regular season games or been on the active roster for an entire year, nor can players be allowed to spend more than two seasons on the same team’s squad unless that team’s active roster never dips below 53 players. ”

Frank Hughes actually did a “cut and paste” joby on the rules a while back which is basically the same as above:

Thank you but the rule I was looking for was weather or not a player claimed off of waivers could be placed on your PS. It happened with three players on the Hawks PS this year so that is the answer. The part I got stuck on was: Is a waived Player a free agent before they cleared waivers?

xcman-
This is a part of a press release from the Seahawks website.
Practice Squad Signings
S Jamar Adams
WR Mike Hass
CB Roy Lewis (claimed off waivers from Pittsburgh)
RB Devin Moore
WR Logan Payne
C/G Blake Schlueter (claimed off waivers from Denver)
LB Thomas Williams (claimed off waivers from Jacksonville)
T Kyle Williams
I imagine they might have a better Idea of weather or not they CLAIMED a player off waivers then you do. In any case I am going to have to trust they do. Thank you though.

it would be than not then, but you are correct that is what is posted, but my point is that NFL rules state that players must clear waivers before being “signed” to the practice squad.
Unless this has changed this year. they is why there is a break between when they have the cuts and when they can put together a practice squad. Teams can’t just place them on the practice squad, they have to sign a PS contract (about $5200 a week)
so I am a little confused about the Claimed bit in this deal but oh well,
This is from the NFL record and fact book
The waiver system is a procedure by which player contracts or
NFL rights to players are made available by a club to other clubs
in the League. During the procedure, the 31 other clubs either file
claims to obtain the players or waive the opportunity to do so—
thus the term “waiver.” . . . any veteran who has acquired four years of pension
credit is not subject to the waiver system if the club desires to
release him.
Not super clear either

The Seahawk press release sounds inaccurate to me. It would have been more accurate to say “signed off waivers from ” instead of “claimed off waivers.”
× Flag comment
The real interesting thing is that the NFL doesn’t have any of the Seahawks practice squad signings recorded. Most of the teams have theirs on the site, but the hawks are among the teams that do not.
Oh well – maybe the paper work just isn’t filed yet, or processed

Seahawksfan57 – This may have been answered for you, but if a team chooses not to “waive” the opportunity to sign a player, and puts in a claim for him, he must be signed to the 53 man roster. But if each team in the league waives that opportunity and he passes through and “clears waivers” then that player can be signed to a teams PS (assuming he has eligibility.) I was confused about that as well, but I believe that is the gist of it. The Seahawks didn’t waive on Frye and claimed him when they were up, thus the 53 man roster. Eric, is that about right?

I can’t wait for the first time that Lawyer Milloy pops off some guys helmet coming across the middle of the field. Something that NEVER HAPPENED during the Brian Russell era.
× Flag comment
It’ll be weird seeing #91 and a quick first step. Atkins will not be missed.
× Flag comment
I don’t know how they expect Milloy to play free safety effectively at age 36. I saw that playoff game Bobby mentioned and this guy cannot cover half the field anymore. The idea of Grant and Babineaux starting is a lot more appealing. Always thought the number 96 should have been retired.

Nighthawk,
As i understand ti, they don’t expect him to…they will put him at strong safety, most likely in passing downs.
× Flag comment
When Milloy is in the game he’ll be the SS and either Grant or Babs will be the FS.
Seattle claims their Safeties are ‘interchangeable’ so the titles of SS and FS really don’t apply.

so here are the official transactions from the NFL. Only one claim
Team logo Seattle Seahawks 9/7
Thomas Williams (LB) practice squad addition.
Roy Lewis (CB) practice squad addition.
Logan Payne (WR) practice squad addition.

Kyle Williams (T) practice squad addition.
Mike Hass (WR) practice squad addition.

I want the SeaHawks to play well and win some games. Milloy had game when he as young. Times have changed and so has he. And a couple people have it right. He gets toasted a lot now. Young speed is faster than the Corner Back and the Safety. I think catch up speed is a great thing to have and younger players have it. I hope his tackling ability is solid so he can help stop the run. Thirty six is not old in regular life but it is in football. I just think it’s hard to keep up with twenty year olds. I wish the Seahawks the best and I hope they win the division. No disrespect or anything but Branch is always hurt. Returning punts and kicks is not a good thing. He will be hurt all over again and out for the season and no use to the team. The wide outs on the practice squad will be back playing regular season games real soon.
