I’m working to confirm this, but NFL.com’s Jason La Confora is reporting that the Seattle Seahawks have cut safety Brian Russell. If true, it would come as somewhat of a surprise. I thought Russell played OK during the preseason, but apparently the team likes Jordan Babineaux better. And it explains the team picking up safety Nate Ness a couple days ago as a potential practice squad guy. I’ll have more later.
UPDATE 2:30: A source familiar with the team confirmed that Russell indeed will be on the cut list when the team announces it’s roster moves at 3 p.m. today.
It’s a curious decision, because as a few folks in the comments section have mentioned, Russell played most of the snaps with the first team during exhibition action.
So do the Seahawks go with Babineaux, or do they pursue another option at free safety?
This is purely speculation, but there’s a couple scenarios out there. The Hawks could pursue Jacksonville converted cornerback/safety Brian Williams.
The Jags are reportedly interested in trading Williams because of his $4 million salary.
Also, University of Washington product and Tacoma native Lawyer Milloy still has not found a team yet, recently turning down a deal to join Detroit this week. Milloy is familiar with the team’s defensive schemes from his time playing for Seattle head coach Jim Mora in Atlanta, and could come and play strong safety, with Deon Grant moving over to free safety. The addition of Milloy would give Seattle two thumpers at the safety position.
I agree that I thought he played well enough to make the squad, although it wouldn’t have surprised to have someone else starting. Well, this will make a lot of people happy. Now, if they just ax Kelly Jennings…

about time!

My prayers have been answered.

Did not see that coming. With Trufant on the PUP list, doesn’t that make us thin at corner? I thought we’d make up for that by having Babs play some corner, but if he takes Russels FS spot then whose going to fill in at as an extra corner in passing downs?

Wow! Hip hip horray!

OK, lets take a quick role call. Who saw THAT one coming?
We were all so engrossed in the LoJack/Reed/Branch and other debates we completely forgot that everyone was calling for this guys head all Spring.

That makes room for Green now.

fanfrickingtastic!
i believe our defense is going to be ridiculous this season. top 3.
anyone else feeling the same way?

I agree, this is a good move. Shows that the coaching staff is moving more towards players that are aggressive and can tackle. Russell was good at the read and react defenses he played with in Minnesota and here with Jim Marshall, but he lacke the athleticism Mora/Bradley want. I like the thought of having Babs on the field more this way.
DisplacedSeahawkFan- This doesn’t affect the CB depth at all really, only moves Kelly Jennings up a spot if at all. Not sure how much CB Babs was going to play in the first place considering they moved him to S in the offseason purposely to compete with Russell. I thought Jennings played really well in the preseason, much more physical than he did all of last season. This leaves Tru, Wilson, Lucas, Jennings, and Hobbs or Travis Fisher. When Travis Fisher is your 6th CB..things could be worse. He isn’t great, but if that’s your worst CB I feel pretty good about things.

I am no russel fan but can’t say I like this move because of the fact that he has been playing with the starters all pre season. Wouldnt it of made more sense to have a competition then cut him that way he isnt the only one with reps with the starters? Was someone else playing with the starters that I am unaware of?
× Flag comment
No, Russell and Grant were the only two starters all pre-season. Any time the #1 D was on the field Russell was out there. That is why this is somewhat suprising. There was no indication what so ever that he was even in jeopardy.
I do think it means there might be a player coming in that is #1 caliber because he definitely wasn’t beaten out by anyone currently on the roster.

Thats what I thought but live in Oregon so didnt get to watch every preseason game. Would make alot more sense if someone was brought in, and if that someone is good this would be a great move, otherwise I will stay confused.

… a Branch trade perhaps.
I blown away, still.
× Flag comment
If they are targeting Williams from Jax in a trade, Jax has a bunch of junk for Receivers. Maybe we could be sending one over there in return.
Just putting a couple rumors together.

Duke…my speculation also.

Lawyer Milloy signs with the ‘Hawks.http://twitter.com/wyche89/statuses/3785710586

Nice! Green is in I bet and Babs will start…we’ll be better off but still the secondary is the weakness of the defense for sure.

Have there been any decent verterens released? Could pick up a one year fix kinda like whale last yr. I think you guys are right though a trade sounds likely. Branch, wr, or dl we are pretty deep there. Possibly a kicker and some younger guys too..? Cant wait to have more details on this.

Well that would explain Russell’s release. I haven’t followed Milloy in a while. What does he have left in the tank?

Ooops. Beat me to it. News coming fast and furious here…

Good question. He had 93 tackles last season, for what that’s worth.

He’s in his 14 year. But he did start 15 games last season. With, wait for it…Atlanta.
The Atlanta to Seattle Underground railroad continues!!!!

I like the move, but I liked it 6 weeks ago. Why would Ruskell have this guy working with the first unit only to cut him? I can’t believe he didn’t have an alternate plan in place after the horrific safety play last year. Babs is a nice piece but not as an everyday solution.
Yet another reason why there has been ZERO rumor of a contract extension for Ruskell in the final year of his contract.
× Flag comment
Atlanta yes, but this seems a little less conspicuous than others. Maybe it’s his New England and Bills back round.
× Flag comment
Deltha O’Neal was cut today too. He’s younger than Milloy.
Isn’t Milloy a Husky?
× Flag comment
Danny O’Neal at the Times is now saying that Milloy was in town yesterday and was out at Seahawks HQ but left without working out.
So, This appears to have been in the works for at least a few days.
Also Milloy is a hometown guy and he did play for the Huskys. He has stated in the past he’d love to come home.
Finally, it was Mora that signed Milloy in Atlanta.
Milloy was offered a contract with Detroit earlier this week and turned them down.
It all becomes clearer now.
× Flag comment
Hmmn. Clearer? Milloy was a SS now being played by Grant. Russell is a FS.
× Flag comment
Why not do this sooner rather than later? At least then the Seahawks could actually see if this will be an upgrade at the position. Milloy has been a solid safety for years, but the guy turns 36 in November.
× Flag comment
Two thumpers at the safety position? This I like.
× Flag comment
They’ll move Grant to FS, no problem. He’s more of a FS anyway, Milloy is a hitter. But I don’t now how much range he’s got left.
× Flag comment
I like Milloy, played with him, and Kitna, at Lincoln HS. But I’d be upset if we picked him: he doesn’t have enough speed or range to play for us. If we pick him we will revert to having the same old problems of giving up the big play down field that we’ve had in many seasons past. It’s not a good move.
× Flag comment
He got burned a couple time last year in the playoff game against the Cardinals. I see this more as insurance for Babs. No way he comes in off the street, suits up and starts a week from tomorrow.
× Flag comment
Definitely blindsided on this one.
Something to know on the Brian Williams rumors… he is a moron and NOT a Ruskell guy. He meets none of the Ruskell criteria as for being a human.
