We should receive work on the Seattle Seahawks final cuts sometime this afternoon, and I’ll post them immediately on the blog when I receive them. But I thought I would post a few links on some of the scuttlebutt involving Seattle around the league this morning.
My story today takes a look at some of the key positions the team will be focusing on in making the final cuts.
I think Seattle could keep 10 defensive linemen, keeping Michael Bennett and Nick Reed on the active roster. I also think they could keep just five WR, with Ben Obomanu being the fifth guy. I think they will keep seven LBs, with Lance Laury being the seventh guy.
And I also believe they will keep four cornerbacks, with either Kevin Hobbs or Travis Fisher being the fourth corner.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported earlier via twitter that wide receiver Deion Branch is one of Seattle’s players on the bubble.
However, Sports Illustrated’s Peter King is reporting via twitter that Branch is safe and the team’s entire draft class will be kept. Still to be determined is how many of those draft picks will be on the active roster, and how many will be put on waivers in order to try and get them on the practice squad.
ESPN’s John Clayton previously said that Branch possibly could get traded, but will not be cut.
Clayton and ESPN’s Mike Sando talk about some of things happening in the NFC West, along with possible moves by the Seahawks in this audio link. The conversation begins about 17 minutes in.
Rod Mar of Seahawks.com provides photos from Thursdays game here.
Clare Farnsworth of Seahawks.com talks to running back Devin Moore, who hopes to remain with Seattle.
My interpetation of the “entire draft class will be kept” comment goes like this: you can’t keep a player if you cut him and another team picks him up. I could be wrong but it means on the 53 man roster.

That’s how I interpreted it to. But I remain skeptical that King knows his a** from a hole in the ground. Why would Ruskell share anything with King? It seems to me (for what it’s worth) that Newton outplayed Morrah soundly in all 4 preseason games. And if they keep Greene I would think that means Wallace is gone. That may be more plausible (despite Wallace’s monster special teams play) but as I said before , I’ll believe it when i see it. Those guys would surely get signed to the PS if they cleared waivers.

RichmondHawk,
Who of our draft class would automatically get scooped up by another team?
Curry: Yes, but obviously going nowhere.
Unger, Butler: See above
Teel: Already has the #3 QB job so falls into above.
Morrah, Greene: Not likely anyone would give them a second look if the team tried to get them through waivers and onto the PS
Reed: THERE is the one that would have the biggest risk to being exposed to the waiver wire.

Someone brough up earlier that King’s daughter is an intern with the Seahawks so to pull those strings he’s probably got a good relationship with somebody deep in the belly of the organization. I don’t doubt the story.

Why is L. Jackson not part of the cut equation? He showed very little last year and even less in the pre-season this year. Bennett and Reed have alot more “upside” than Jackson ever will. Jackson was a mistake and should be cut. Reed is an Aaron Kampmen or Jared Allen clone that will only get more dominant with added size and snaps.

Chuck,
Its a littlte tid-bit from King so you’re probably not getting exact quotes. You would probably say something like this if they were to get cut and then put on the PS: “the entire draft class will be kept if the cut players clear waivers”. I am with you about Morrah and Greene but I don’t think that’s what he’s saying.

“…got a good relationship with somebody deep in the belly of the organization” That is disturbing to read and funny.

Okay its more definitive if you look at Kings tweet:
“Sea runs too much 3-wide to whack Branch. Ruskell also says entire draft class will be kept at cutdown.”

Peter King can come off as somewhat pompous and arrogant but he usually doesn’t ‘shoot from the lip’. He used to not have a very high opinion of Seattle until his daughter came to work for the Seahawks. I’ve noticed since she started in the FO Peter King’s musings on Seattle are much more balanced.
I would believe Peter King if he says he’s heard this right from Ruskell.

Peter King is in the same league as “Dr. Z” for SI. Out of touch and out to lunch.

With a week to go till it’s all for real i’ve gone into a bunker mentality about columns and speculation so the only link i followed was the one to game photo’s.
Was some nice shots of AC smiling like a kid at disney land playing before the fans for the first time.
I get the sense this kid just loves to play football and truly does appreciate just how lucky he is to be playing NFL ball. and just think some people wanted crabtree instead.

Duke – I agree that Newton has outplayed Morrah, but I think Morrah will be kept. Neither will be active on Sundays, unless there is an injury, so I think Ruskell will keep the rookie. I hope that same logic doesn’t come into play with the underperforming Jackson/Atkins getting kept over Reed/Bennett. We’ll see…

Great photos………absolutely the best!

I suspect someone would claim Greene off of waivers simply because some teams seem to be short of safeties. Detroit just traded for Ko Simpson for that reason. Of course, the practice squad is no guarantee they stay here, any team can sign someone off another team’s P.S. to their 53 man roster. I think it was Payne who turned down someone, maybe in 2007, to stay with the Seahawks on their practice squad.

Dang i hate this waiting!.

If the Russell rumor is true it won’t bring tears to many eyes around here, but how does the team go from listing and playing the guy as the #1 safety all pre-season to cutting him?
There was no inclination what so ever that Russell was even in danger.

They must have picked up a Safety off the wire…

It’s not a rumour about Rusell. He is cut – http://blogs.nfl.com/category/news/

@KelsoHawk….hahahah!! nice. no, she’s not 16. but she is 13 years my junior.
did i just read that correctly? Russell is gone? this is fantastic news if it’s true. no more whiffed tackles in the secondary.
ok, back outside.

Maybe they picked up Aaron Francisco from the Cards to replace him..
From one toast to the other. (burned all the time)

The Russell situation is a strong rumor, but just that at this point. A reporter from NFL.com does not constitute a fact.

Also could mean that the team is going after Williams from Jacksonville. They are trying to trade the vet and he can play both SS and CB.

Francsico was a joke

The move clears the way for Seattle to sign veteran free agent safety Lawyer Milloy today, sources with knowledge of the situation told NFL.com’s Steve Wyche.
