The Chiefs inched closer with a 35-yard field goal by Ryan Succop. The field goal was set up by a 33-yard reception by Ashley Lelie down the left sideline over cornerback Kevin Hobbs. About 10 minutes left in the game.

  1. On the tipped pick six Matt ended up on the turf trying to prevent the TD. Dang, I wish he wouldn’t do that, especially in preseason.

With both walter Jones and Chris Spencer expected to miss 4-6 games, will the Hawks carry an extra O linemen? Will either Jones or Spencer count on the 53 man roster before they come back?

  2. Dukeshire says:

    Yes, they both will.

Eric, any word on what ailed Seneca? It appeared to be a cramp despite Menefe’s nonsense (good lord he’s awful).

Forsett with another very good game. If Hobbs wasn’t on the outside looking in before tonight, he certainly is now. I wish Reed got time earlier on. Regardless, he showed more than that spin move he likes so much. He’s significantly more polished right now than Jackson. God, I wish he were bigger. Deon Butler is a klutz. Fast, but little balance or body control. Glad they settled in after the 1st quarter. Over all more positive than negative.

  3. Even counting W Jones and Spencer they barely have nine O linemen worth keeping. Mark Tauscher is the only FA left worth a look. If the Hawks keep 10 on the O line until Jones or Spencer returns they almost have to trade for someone.

And if they keep 10 on the O line and six at WR there is no way they can keep Reed or Bennett. They will have to hope they can get them on the practice squad.

Bennett is almost definitely PS bound. Reed may have a chance to make the 53 man roster.

All in all, the OL looked decent tonight. Not great but not bad.

I still think Mare is the kicker thanks to Coutu’s miss.

Something was definitely up tonight. The three kickers were a combined 1-6 in FG attempts.

  5. Dukeshire says:

I think Reed makes it. If for no other reason than I don’t think they could get him to the PS. I agree that Bennett is PS bound.

I didn’t watch the Seahawk game (again). Instead,
I had to watch 9ers vs.Cowgirls. The good news is that Romo was lousy again and his back-up is Kitna ( do I need say more?). Girls should not have better
standings than us ,and if we can beat them here—
    they are finished.
The bad news is that SF is SOLID with all 4 of their RBs. The rookie Kory Sheets tore up the Girls “D”. Good news is that they can’t keep all four of them so, we should watch and see what happens there. Trust me, this kid (Sheets) is gooood
Their rookie QB Davis (out of Ball St,)was the best QB they had tonight.
I guess “little Nicky” got another sack tonight,ha?
He better be among the 53 if you ask me.

  7. The 3rd quarter has just started and we have a 14-7 lead (didn’t have game on live — friends b-day party — now watching game on NFLN).

One thing I noticed in the first half — it seemed like Matt knows his OL is pretty terrible in pass protection and seemed to want to dump it off early and often, even when there wasn’t a lot of pressure. Up to this point, I don’t think the line has been bad… but if you’re consistently bad (which they have been) the QB isn’t going to trust that he’s going to get enough time and may rush things (whereas Matt, himself, said that part of the problem was him holding the ball too long — granted, he’s not going to throw his guys under the bus, even if he thinks they are bad). All in all, I am pleasantly surprised by our OL. It’s not great, but I don’t think we can expect them to be given the talent level. However, they held their own and that’s what we need them to do. Again, the 2 minute offense is a different beast and we’ve been doing very well in this aspect.

I have been critical of the RB situation and I still don’t think we have a good unit, but it’s not as bad as some of the posters have said on their “fire Ruskell for no good reason” rants (but I do appreciate the rants that are backed up by good facts). I have said this before, but if you go back on this blog to early last season when MoMo was injured and Jones had to carry the load… there are a lot of comments about how people were impressed by Jones (before they turned on him again). He’s not a Pro Bowler, he’s not even probably in the top half of the league in RBs, but he’s not a garbage guy either (like Duckett).

I wouldn’t trade John Carlson for any other TE in the NFL even if they all had the same contracts. No Gates. No Cowgirl. Nobody.

Did I miss something? Somebody mentioned that Walt is going to be out the first 4-6 weeks of the season. Is this true or is it someone misinterpreting something and posting it?

One thing I am very not happy about is the tackling from our first team defense. I bought into all the Mora kool-aid press conference stuff (I still am happy he’s our coach) but the defense isn’t running around and making the plays (wrapping up). At that press conference, he also talked about the passion and stuff about getting to the QB… We haven’t given up any points in the game yet (there’s over 3:00 left in the 3rd quater as I type) but this is the Chiefs we are playing. They are a bad team (offense, defense, ST). I think we should look a bit better against a bad team.

Regardless, we’re 0-0 in games that count and I think we’re okay in accomplishing what we all want accomplished this season. Sounds a lot like last year, but OL and pass rush are the two main things that will be an indicator of our regular season record. Should be a fun ride!
