You can say this much about head coach Jim Mora’s announcement on Wednesday that offensive tackle Walter Jones needed arthroscopic surgery and Marcus Trufant has a “disk issue,” likely leaving both of them unavailable for the beginning of the regular season – he was prepared.
The Seahawks already have been working on the offensive line with a plan in place should Jones not be available, with Sean Locklear working as heir apparent at left tackle, Ray Willis filling Locklear’s spot at right tackle and rookie Max Unger filling in at right guard.
Seattle had wanted to try Locklear at right guard when Jones returned to practice this week, but they only got a few plays to look at the new configuration before Jones started to feel pain in his surgically repaired left knee on Monday.
Now the team’s attempt to create more versatility and depth across the line is even more important with Jones likely out for an extended period of time.
Further, the move over the offseason in signing free agent Ken Lucas has proved even more invaluable. Lucas has played with a renewed focus since joining the team, out to prove doubters wrong that his play had slipped toward the end of his tenure in Carolina. With Lucas and Josh Wilson the team has two, legitimate corners going into the regular season.
Kelly Jennings has been OK as the team’s nickel corner. However, Jennings still can’t come up with the big play down the field, so the team could always go back to using Jordan Babineaux in nickel situations.
With Jones and Trufant out, the team will have a drop in production at those two positions, but at least they have a plan in place moving forward to cover for those areas should the two veterans be out for a long period of time.
The most promising thing helping the Seahawks get through the first part of the season potentially without the services of Jones and Trufant is the team’s schedule.
Seattle plays four of its first six games at home. And the combined record of the teams they play in those six games from the 2008 regular season is 44-52. That stretch includes home games against St. Louis, Chicago, Jacksonville and Arizona along with road games at San Francisco and Indianapolis. So the Seahawks could possibly squeak buy without two of its best players until the team’s bye comes in Week 7.
Here’s my story detailing the two announcements from Wednesday afternoon’s practice on Jones and Trufant.

Any thoughts as to what to expect the league will do to Hill? any historical perspectives you can provide?

I think you can look to the example given in the story, with the NFL suspending New York Jets defensive end Shaun Ellis for one game and fining him $100,000 following a marijuana arrest last fall.
The problem with Hill is his case isn’t set to go to trial until December, which means he might have to miss a game later in the season. I would imagine Hill would want to get this out of the way sooner rather than later.

Hill normally misses a game or two due to injury every year, so by December he’ll probably need an off game. I’d rather do it when you’re hurt instead of when you’re ready to go. Aside from his R year (when he didn’t start early on), has he made it 16 games in a season? I don’t think so. Granted, nothing has been where he’s missing a few months, but still… he plays hard and that takes a toll on his body. For a guy his size, Hill can take on OL and stuff them with the best but it’s dang hard on a body and there’s a reason he isn’t an ironman 16 week a year player.

I would say with all of our draft picks next year we could consider trading for a premiere corner in the league, but cap room I’m sure is a problem
× Flag comment
We’re already paying for a ‘premiere’ corner. ouch
Besides the Trufant thing I think the D might be really good this year. The new DC should really mix things up and with Red, Colin, Brandon, Cory etc on the line & things should be tough for our opponents.. (not to mention Kerney, Tapp, & the THC gang)
But if another OT is lost, Who do we have? Kyle Williams?

We don’t have a lot of draft picks though. We have an extra 1st rounder, this is well documented, but we don’t have a 3rd rounder thanks to the Butler trade. We’re just like almost everyone else in only having 3 picks in the first 3 rounds. Granted, I’d rather have an extra #1 than a 3rd rounder any day.
With a lot of FA contracts really only being 3 year deals, we’re looking at needing to possibly replace both SS & FS, and having some questions at DE with Kerney having completed his 3rd year and Tapp/Redding as FAs.
Offensively, OL is still going to need to be addressed, Branch will most likely be gone (IMO), Burleson is a FA (but I can see him coming back), and lets hope that Matt’s back is okay this year. We still need a RB. That’s a lot of holes. Still, I think we’re in okay shape. The only thing that is going to suck about next years draft is picking 32nd in each round (except the 3rd). Hopefully, the Broncos can make sure we have a pick around 8-9-10. In all honesty, I don’t want another position like Curry at #4 and paying someone with zero NFL experience all that money. If the Broncos are at 2 wins in week 11, I’m definitely going to root for them to win a few games. I’d rather have a Mack or Oher and what they are being paid for being a pick around 20 than having Curry and his #4 overall contract. And I always thought if you sucked it was supposed to be your benefit? At least it was that way until these top 5 picks keep getting paid way too much.

I guess I need to temper my comments, yesterday Danny O’Neil said I had a hatred towards Kelly Jennings…….
Wilson took over the starting job from Jennings during last season. When the team went to the nickel, Jennings came in and played the outside and Wilson moved to the slot. Basically Jennings played his old corner position in the nickel. Groan. Groan. With Jennings playing the outside receiver, our chances of a dramatic improvement in pass coverage is questionable. We were dead last in passing yardage allowed last year; let’s not forget how bad we were.
Can we email Ruskell Mike Mckenzie’s phone number? Maybe Ty Law for a one year fix? Maybe Travis Fisher is a reincarnation of Mike Haynes? Mora was a defensive back in college, maybe he could suit up?

eric – is it at all a ‘battle’ between Russell and Babineaux for the safety spot, or is it looking very much like Russell is going to be the starter again this year?
definitely helps to know that Lucas has looked good so far – that helps temper the Trufant situation. as we all know, coverage is all about pass rush – and toward that end, does kerney appear to be 100%? and is he still as good as he was for us a couple seasons ago?

Pdway — I think Russell’s got the spot locked up unless he just looks awful the next two games. Kerney’s in great shape and is playing fast. If he can stay healthy I predict he’ll have a good season this year.

Depending of course on how they address FA (http://walterfootball.com/freeagentscontractssea.php) I’ve got to believe RB, secondary and OL are the greatest needs, followed closely by DL to address in next years draft.
As for Jennings: Hopefully things like not bringing the house on 3rd and long, leaving him alone, will help. An improved pass rush will certainly help. This is a very creative coaching staff, they’ll find a way to protect him as best as possible.

One thing with Jennings is that we know he’ll most likely have pretty good coverage. It’s just that he’ll bounce RBs, WRs, or TEs when trying to make a tackle, bouce off the WR in a jump ball situation, or get pushed down. Ten more lbs and more musle mass and that guy would be a good corner. Of course, if you could add 20 miles per hour to my fastball, I’d probably be pitching in the bigs right now.

I agree on next years needs (at this point in time) RB, OL, Secondary.
With our 2 picks depending on where they are situated it would be really cool if we could turn those into 3 lower first round picks or 2 first and a second.
If we had 2 first and 2 – 2nd rounders you could get a RB, OL, Secondary, and a Best player available in those picks and if done well they could all help right away next year and that would be cool!!

I believe, as I did before the draft, that we needed a very good LT this year and missed when we took Curry. I know, a few of the vg OL were gone when we did #4 but the value of a VG LT who could play RT or G this year seems to be greater than what A. Curry can give us in 2009. We’ll see. Curry would have to light it up to surpass the value, if Walt can’t go, of a top 3 LT in 09.
That leaves LOT, QB, and RB as the three top needs for 2010 in my book. If there is a very good corner available I would be willing to drop RB need to round 4. Even if Matt is healthy he isn’t forever, unfortunately. As for Walt, remember Tubbs? We lost him too soon but big men and microfracture surgery don’t mix too well too often. I love Walt and hope he comes back but as Dukeshire said a few articles past we need to start considering life after Walt. God bless one of the best (THE Best??) Hawk ever and may Walt heal soon.
Now we need to start shopping 1 – 2 of the “extra” yet still very good WR’s and maybe a DE for a servicable OT/G guy. We did let Porkchop go, didn’t we? Yeah, good one. We also need to shop for secondary help but good CB’s may be few and far…
I know the Hawks will be better this year than last and better next year than this. It still should be an exciting and interesting year watching the Team adopt the new schemes, Coaches and players. With two #1′s and our #2 next yeay we will have other young players to watch learn and grow. A very interesting and fun time for the Hawks – haven’t we become used to at least 8 – 8 or much better? My what 10 years will do to a franchise.

I get a kick out of all this “trade” talk…Why would anyone trade us anything for one of our kickers when they know damn good and well that there’ll be one or the other free for the taking after the cut down to 53. Teams just aren’t going to trade right now, they’ll all wait and see what’s available after the final cuts…THEN there might be some action…As far as letting Pork Chop go, much as I liked him, (and who couldn’t like an O lineman named Pork Chop) he was almost always hurt…last year was the very forst year that he wasn’t a mash case from early on. I’m still betting our first two picks next year will be S and LT…Teel looked REALLY good (for a rook in his first NFL game), let’s wait and see what we’ve got there…If Matt doesn’t take much punishment this year, then he’ll be good for at least next year, giving Teel another year to develop…

I sure didn’t say squat about a kicker. Were you responding to voices in your head?
It is not without precedent that teams trade before the final cut deadline. Why wait to get one of our WR,s AFTER they go to the open market when, if you like them, you can get rid of one of your “excess” Lineman for one of our “excess” WR’s?
I’ve been involved with and a fan of football for 43 years, but nightwulf, I guess I don’t know as much as you do about this game. PLEASE teach me oh master of trades, preseason player moves and player value.
Yeah, PC was injured often but at this juncture for the next 4 – 6 weeks, or season, he is (hate to say it) better than a sidelined Walt. Oh great personnel manager of all things football, who would you rather have for the next 4 – 6 weeks – PC or any of the other tackles we now have? I am speaking precisely of what happens if we (God forbid) get another tackle hurt?
As for Teel he looked good and has a strong arm and showed good judgement – the tipped int. probably wasn’t his fault but that is how they score the game. I wouldn’t be annointing him anything long term quite yet. However I guess you can call the Hawks personnel folks and tell them to stop looking at first and second round QB’s for 2010 because nightwulf says Teel is the real deal.
Must be nice to be able to poo poo comments on a blog. When you poo poo this one PLEASE NOTE I didn’t say squat about Kickers. OK?
