Training camp Day 12: Hawks head inside

To the surprise and probably consternation of some fans who planned to attend practice this morning, the Seattle Seahawks practiced inside today.

Head coach Jim Mora apologized to the fans that did not get the email from the team, which reportedly numbered about 300 folks. Mora said alternative plans will be made to accommodate fans who did not make practice so they can attend another practice day.

The Seahawks moved inside because a couple players suffered leg strains or pulls working on the slicker surface outside with the afternoon rain on Monday.

“The reason we came inside is I felt yesterday was a little soft and a little slippery,” Mora said. “We had a couple groin strains, and that this point of camp when their legs are a little bit heavy and it’s wet out, I think you’re asking for trouble if you put them on a field that is not stable.”

Mora said he’s unsure if the team will practice outside this evening.

As a result of Monday evening’s practice, the injury list continued to grow today, although Mora was somewhat ambiguous in his explanation of a few of the players’ injuries.

Linebacker Lofa Tatupu sat out his third practice, but Mora said Tatupu just had general soreness. Same with defensive end Lawrence Jackson, who Mora said had a leg strain. Those two joined Josh Wilson (groin), Deon Grant (groin), Well Herring (groin), Chris Spencer (ankle), Walter Jones (back), Marcus Trufant (back), Deion Branch (knee), D.D. Lewis (knee), Cory Redding (fatigue), Ray Willis (knee), and Grey Ruegamer (elbow).

Patrick Kerney (soreness) started out on the field but later headed to the training room for treatment. Kerney had a sleeve on his calf.

With four offensive linemen out, the Seahawks only had 10 offensive linemen for practice. Mora said that’s part of the deal during this time of training camp, and said that’s just something the players have to work through.

“I think they’re all one to two-day kind of fatigue injuries more than anything,” Mora said. “We’ll know more as we go along, but nothing that I’m real concerned with right now.”

The team practiced in just helmets and shells this morning, and worked on red zone offense and defense during team drills. Mora had crowd noise playing throughout the team periods, as offensive coordinator Greg Knapp worked on communicating with Matt Hasselbeck and Seneca Wallace on offense and linebackers coach Zerick Rollins did the same with David Hawthrone by talking through the radio headset systems.

Mora said the team will decide on Thursday how much rookie Aaron Curry will play on Saturday, along with formulating a plan for playing time for the rest of the team. Mora also said the plan, at least at this point, is for Tatupu to play on Saturday.

With Grant out, Jordan Babineaux played with the first unit at safety.

Cornerback Kelly Jennings continues to look good in coverage in one-on-one drills, doing a nice job during the goal line period on T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Although Nate Burleson did outfight Jennings on a go route towards the end of practice, with Burleson making a tough, diving catch that probably was the play of the day.

Both kickers were perfect during special teams period on field goals.

Ryan Divish will be attending this evening’s practice and providing the practice report.

That’s all for now.

  1. Norseman says:

Eric, can you provide some insight as to how the zone blocking scheme works, and what the challenges are for players and coaches in implementing that system?

    thanks!

  2. Corry Redding has been “Fatigued ” a little bit much.
Did he show up to camp out of shape?
Or does he have an injury?

  3. MauMau – I thought the same thing about Redding. After the restructuring of his contract that will allow him to be a FA after the season, I thought he’d come into camp in better shape. Most of the other players aren’t missing practice b/c they are “fatigued.”

Until I hear otherwise, I’m going to assume Lawrence Jackson isn’t doing anything overly productive (unfortunately).

Lets pretend the OL doesn’t make the strides we all hope they make and with the uncertainty from our RB/FBs in pass blocking drills… I wonder if we’ll see more of John Owens in pass protection? Kind of like what Mike Tice used to be for us. Not all the time, obviously, but when Matt drops back to pass for some extra protectioin. All indications are that he’s a good, overall, blocker (run/pass). Anyone else have any thoughts on this? And, yes, I know it’s still early, I just like to think of different situations even if they never come up.

  4. Dukeshire says:

Remember, Redding was put on IR in December last season with knee and groin injuries. It doesn’t seem terribly unreasonable that he is working himself into shape during camp. Doubtful he was able to do much conditioning while recovering.

  5. Dukeshire..TY for the info

  6. He is also a big guy – thats gotta count for something!! Also, we have seen more guys than normal that miss a session or two – due to fatigue

From all accounts on the radio and here, practices are much more intense and tougher than in years past. Many of these guys might not have been totally ready for that. Being weight room strong and “in shape” is not the same as being “game shape”

I still feel good about what is happening!!

  7. Good point but I had heard in the past when he was a Lion that there were concerns about he and Shaun Rodgers and their conditioning habits. Some felt that his big year didn’t just happen in his contract year (as the case with many though). I think he’s a great 1 year rental though.

  8. Dukeshire says:

Not sure I’d refer to him as a rental just yet. For my money (which of course, it’s not) I see it more as an audition, if you will. If he proves to be the player they are hoping for, I can see the ‘Hawks extending him for another 2 years or so. They will have a lot of questions after this year at DE. Kerney’s future, Tapp will be a FA, has Jackson shown any improvement, Redding of course. My feeling is (of course this is based on nothing of consequence) that no real decisions have been made.

  9. Duke – when I was AWOL from the blog for that few weeks, had there been much about Lawrence Jackson? Had he been doing anything to make people think there’s a reason he was a 1st rounder?

  10. Dukeshire says:

Nothing too substantial either way. The three names that seem to come up over and over are Redding, Tapp and Bryant. You know how it is: without seeing them play it’s hard to know. But if I were to guess at it I would say he is struggling a bit. When a player is singled out it is nearly always for something positive so the fact he hasn’t been mentioned much at all may speak volumes.

    How’s the new house?

  11. nightwulf says:

Duke, don’t forget that there has been much mention of the new, faster, slimmed down Mebane:) I SO wanna get pumped, but I’m so afraid after how pumped I got about the D last year…

  12. MadSweeney42 says:

I’m reading on another board of an UNSUBSTANTIATED RUMOR about the Jets and Hawks in talks to send Thomas Jones here for Branch and/or a 4th rounder next year. It riginates at National Football Post which is apparently run by legit beat reporters. Any whisperings of this from your end Eric?

  13. twocolorcrayon says:

That’s an old rumor that in my opinion doesn’t hold any water… I think I remember even hearing that around draft time. It’s nothing new and honestly I’d rather have the potential healthy Branch one year than the other Jones.

  14. Dukeshire says:

I seem to remember that a couple months ago. I hadn’t heard that it has come back to life.

  15. You’d think if it were going to get done that it’d be done by now so each player could be getting used to its new respective offense.

Duke – FINALLY getting settled in.

  16. Dukeshire says:

I thought this was really cool. Interesting insight into Mora’s style.

    http://myespn.go.com/blogs/nfcwest/0-9-580/Mora-s-wrath-comes-through-in-different-ways.html

Bobby – The joys of home ownership.

  17. AKhawkFan says:

The trade talks with jones have actually regenerated. I guess NY made a call to SEA. I guess you never know.

  18. Dukeshire says:

Are there any links someone can provide to this “story”?

  19. chuck_easton says:

    Dukeshire,

It’s on the SI Rumor page.

Supposedly the Jets made the call and specifically to an NFC West team. The reason Seattle would be the likely choice is obvious.

    Arizona: Hightower, Wells
    St. Louis: Jackson
    SF: Gore, Coffee

Seattle: Nobody outside of the greater King County area code thinks Seattle even has a running back in camp.

  20. Dukeshire says:

Thanks, I see that now. If it is true (skeptical) I wouldn’t rule out Arizona but Seattle would seem to be the choice. There’s just something that I don’t trust about something so vague.

Did anyone notice the at the top of the NFL page it’s Hass featured? Pretty cool.
