Morning links: Silver says Mora gives Hawks welcome jolt

The Seahawks have just the afternoon practice today. I’ll file a camp report afterward. I’ll be answering questions that continue to pile up in the comments sections for an upcoming post, so if you have questions or concerns about the team fire away in the comments section below and I’ll get to them.

Yahoo Sports’ Michael Silver attended Seattle Seahawks practice the last two days and offers this assessment of Jim Mora’s first training camp as the head man in Seattle.

Camp Mora, predictably, has been up-tempo and high energy, a welcome jolt for a group that had grown used to Holmgren’s detached leadership style. Mora walks around with a whistle that he isn’t shy about using and, when displeased by a player’s technique or missed assignment, barks out the requisite corrections. Though the man doesn’t drink caffeine, a Starbucks endorsement seems inevitable.

“There’s never a dull moment, on or off the field,” middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu(notes) says. “You’ve got a head coach breathing down your neck – ‘Snap your hips – that’s not good enough!’ – and you can tell he loves every minute of it. It’s been a good change. It was a shock when they announced a new head coach before it was actually in place for him to take over, but I think they chose the right man for the job.”

Mora swears there’s nowhere else he’d rather be – including across town at the University of Washington. He winces at the question, and for good reason: Mora’s potential return to his alma mater is a sensitive subject that has directly impacted his career arc.

Silver also talked with KJR’s Mike Gastineau about the Seahawks in this audio link.

Seattle Seahawks

The competition between Brian Russell and Jordan Babineaux may not be as heated as we were led to believe.

TNT columnist Dave Boling takes a closer look at T.J. Duckett and his hopes for the 2009 season.

Confirming what we’ve already reported, Kent Babb of the Kansas City Star quotes an agent who has negotiated 20, first-round contracts, who says that he believes the Chiefs and Seahawks front office are talking to each other about how their perspective draft picks, No. 3 overall selection Tyson Jackson and No. 4 overall pick Aaron Curry’s negotiations are progressing.

“If Curry signs,” the agent said, “this deal is going to get done fast.”

Greg Johns of Seattlepi.com provides a closer look at the fans interaction with the players on the first day the public was allowed to watch training camp.

As noted in this Associated Press report, Nate Burleson and Deon Branch are back on the field and healthy after suffering ACL injuries and are looking to produce.

John Boyle of the Everett Herald reports that running back Justin Forsett should be an asset in Seattle’s new, zone blocking scheme.

Clare Farnsworth at Seahawks.com counts Lofa Tatupu among the players who stood out during the evening practice on Monday.

Danny O’Neil of the Seattle Times discusses T.J. Houshmandzadeh’s expectations for the 2009 season.

Seattle Times columnist Jerry Brewer profiles Cory Redding, who says he’s a man’s man.

Ex-Seahawk Jason Babin was picked up by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Offensive Coordinator Greg Knapp talked with KJR’s Elise Woodward in this audio link.

Defensive coordinator Gus Bradley talks with Brock Huard and Mike Salk in this audio link.

And head coach Jim Mora joined KJR’s Mitch Levy and Hugh Millen in this audio link.

San Francisco 49ers

John Crumpacker of the San Francisco Chronicle says running back Frank Gore is working hard during the first days of camp, but the 49ers coaches are still monitoring his reps to make sure he has fresh legs once the season begins.

Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat says in this training camp report that the 49ers passing game is far ahead of where it was a year ago.

From Dan Brown of the San Jose Mercury News: This is probably something you don’t want to hear from San Francisco offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye if you’re Michael Crabtree: “I don’t know any more about Michael Crabtree now than I did when we drafted him,” Raye said. “I think you all are probably a little more concerned about him not being here than we are.”

Arizona Cardinals

ESPN’s Mike Sando addresses some key questions for the Cardinals as they work toward the regular season.

Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports also offers his impressions of Cardinals in this camp report.

Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic says Larry Fitzgerald is emerging as a leader for the Cardinals.

More Somers: He takes a look at Arizona’s depth chart here.

St. Louis Cardinals

Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says the heat is on quarterback Marc Bulger to perform this season.

Rookie offensive tackle Jason Smith is going through the bumpy road all rookies experience in their first year in the league, according to Jim Thomas of the Post-Dispatch.

I read Silver’s analysis earlier this morning and was surprised by his optimism. It’s common place for the national media to bash the ‘Hawks, when, that is, they decide to cover them. (Not that a positive story alone makes it good or bad. Just refreshing.)

Eric – How is Nick Reed getting along? Is he getting many reps? Beyond technique, does he seem able to hold his own against such physically bigger players? Thanks again.

  2. Lol! Here it comes! Sportwriters just can’t get enough of Mora and his whistle!

I posted this a few weeks ago:

“I think the star of the preseason will be Coach Mora running around practice with a whistle around his neck. The sports writers can’t get enough of Mora. Things we will read at least a dozen times between now and September will include: “young, energetic Coach Mora running with a whistle around his neck!”. Most common words in Seahawks articles: “young”, “energetic, “player’s coach”, “running”, and “whistle”.”

Seriously, though, it is great to have a new energetic coach, and great to get some positive national press for a change.

Great job on the blog, Eric. Two o-line questions from me.

    1. Any word or thoughts on when Solari and Mora are going to settle on the final five starting o-lineman? We’ve been hurt with a lack of cohesiveness over the last couple of years and I’m anxious to get these guys playing together as a unit.
    2. How does Rob Simms look? I’ve heard conflicting reports, from he had one of the best offseasons, to struggling a little bit in training camp. Simms is always seems to be a tease and I’m curious what you think.

  4. Love the regime change. Although I’ve said this many times throughout the off-season, even though Holmy is the better coach for 2011, 2012, 2013, etc. The energy and change of what we’ve had is a great recipe for success in 2010. This Rob Sims starting thing just scares the hell out of me though. Man, how I hope he plays well and has a good season! Even though many of you regulars know how much I think this guy is terrible, I am truly rooting for him in ’09! We can’t expect to have a Super season is our interior OL is mush AGAIN. By my count, Spencer and Sims are both in contract years. I hope they both play well enough to get rich next year!!!
