What are the chances the Seahawks make the playoffs?

Decent chances, you say?

That would be one view, given they are only two games behind the Arizona Cardinals in the division and still have two games left against the Cards, who are prone to, well, choke.

But I did a little digging, on which I am basing my Sunday preview story. Guess how many teams in NFL history have started their season 1-5 and have gone on to make the playoffs? Go ahead, guess.

Exactly one. The 1970 Cincinnati Bengals. And that was during a 14-game season. No teams have accomplished the feat since the league went to a 16-game season in 1978.

That Bengals team actually started the season 1-6. They won their opener, dropped six straight, then reeled off seven straight wins to win the division at 8-6. They lost in the first round of the playoffs to Baltimore, which eventually won the title that season.

The quarterbacks coach on that Bengals team? Bill Walsh.

When I see stats like this for any team or player I think it’s gonna happen. Streaks stats and records all fall eventually. Why not the Hawks?? If we could only get healthy! Long shot, yes! Possible? Absolutely!!

  2. OutSydeDog says:

I think that the Seahawks are gonna make the playoffs, and win every game they play, regardless of the odds. That’s what makes me a fan. They’re in it until there not. Now….let’s kick some Philly butt tomorrow!

    GO HAWKS!!!

  3. JRhawks says:

We stand a real good chance, primarily just because of our division. we’d likely be toast if we were in many of the other divisions…but we’re not, it is what it is….and thank god.

All the critics have attributed the only reason the ‘Hawks have been a playoff team in recent years is because of our division….so like New England had a real tough go in their division in recent years?? and its our fault Arizona never lives up the their expectations. But got to admit it, it may be our saving grace this year.

If we get little healthier and Arizona does their annual choke session again, I’m liking our chances.

  4. Dukeshire says:

I vote for a moratorium on all playoff talk (especially when it is suggested that some feel there is a “decent” chance) until this team either; 1. Beats a team with a winning record 2. comes within even 1 game of .500. Of course it could happen, but talking playoffs right now is absurd, in my view.

  5. Dukeshire says:

“We stand a real good chance” Let’s revisit that statement tomorrow at this time.

“… I’m liking our chances.” Yeah, got ‘em right where we want ‘em. My god!

  6. Scipio000 says:

What’s that? Playoffs?! Don’t talk about playoffs! You kidding me? Playoffs?! I just hope we can win a game.

  7. Dukeshire says:

    … another one.

  8. pabuwal says:

The NFC West Champion will be 7-9 this year.

  9. PDXCOP80 says:

I agree with the moratorium. We will know so much more by tomorrow night anyways.

  10. streamhawk says:

    Frank,

Any news regarding the Hawks picking up Gbaja-Biamila(KGB)? That guy would help sure up our weak pass rush, esp. w/ all the injuries right now.

  11. The perennial weak pass rush of the Seahawks is not so much a problem with the DE’s, it is a problem with the middle not collapsing the pocket. We get plenty of sacks but sacks alone does not make for good QB pressure. KGB is not going to fix that. Basically, we need another Tez.

  12. Your comparison between the 14 game and 16 game schedules makes no sense. It’s more likely for a 1-5 team to come back with 2 extra games, right? I mean, not likely, but slightly less unlikely, right?

  13. Playoff talk is a great dream, and yea the Seahawks can go all the way. That would make all the highlight films and the folks back east would know we are here! One game at a time!! Seahawks 38 Eagles 10 we are on our way

  14. livinglargent says:

I believe when the Chargers went to the Super Bowl they started off 0-5. Regardless, this team has no shot at the playoffs and does not deserve to be in the playoffs. Personally, I think the NFL should change the rules so that the top 6 records get into the playoffs, regardless of division, and division winners be damned. Frankly, no team in this division deserves to be in the playoffs.

  15. If Matt doesn’t come back SOON we’re f-ed.

    If we don’t win tomorrow we’re f-ed.

If we win tomorrow, get Matt back next week, and keep Marshall as DC we’re f-ed.

I don’t like our chances and I’m p!ssed about it.

I hate not having anything to root for!

I hated the 90s and we’re back to revisiting them at least for THIS year!

    Sucking sucks!

  16. ’05 superstars — Walt, Hutch, Matt, Shaun (I will go to my grave knowing he was good, but overrated), Tubbs (only the rest of the league was too dumb to know he was a superstar), and Tatupu (a Timmay! special).

’08 superstars — Walt (not as good as ’05 Walt), Tatupu, Matt (not Timmay’s! fault he’s dead – superstar when healthy).
The ’08 Shaun sucks so I’m glad he’s not around anymore. Too bad he was given 984735987340985796908743609873469879847359875908234759083745098734960872390876098374569873490686709348476093847469087346098713905871390871309867980324765908342756908732498560734987538465874365908734907850934875908347690873490685743908679034872 dollars after his season in which Walt, Hutch, and Robbie did most of the work.
If Timmay! has been such a great GM since ’05, why the hell can’t he produce one superstar after the drafting of Lofa? He’s collected a decent piece here and there (Mebane especially comes to mind as a #3 in ’07) but it’s obvious the team is taking steps backwards under his direction.

Giving an above average OLB more money than the best G on the planet (JP over Hutch), come on!!! Derrr!!! And he’s dumb enough to continually say it wasn’t a mistake to only put the transition tag on Hutch. Geez… fess up and admit a mistake… people respect you more for it when you do…

  17. re: “Frankly, no team in this division deserves to be in the playoffs”
kind of early to say no team in this division deserves to be in the playoffs isn’t it, not even 1/2 way through yet.
Arizona has put up some decent games this year, and onesthey’ve lost have put up some big scores still. they win another 6 or 7, i’d say they deserve to be in.

  18. seahawk44 says:

If there is one moratorium that needs to be……it is the “Ruskell loses Hutchinson” rhetoric.
