Practice squad players could be announced today

The players who were released yesterday have until 1 o’clock this afternoon to clear waivers. Then they have to negotiate their contracts — not that there is a great deal to negotiate — with the team. Whichever players get done, the team could announce this afternoon.

There is no practice today. They start their regular practice schedule tomorrow, with an afternoon practice, Tuesdays off, and then resume practice on Wednesday in preparation for the Sunday game.

I am heading out for the afternoon but will post the practice squad players who are announced once I get back

Babineaux’s offense

The way I am reading the NFL’s substance abuse policy, it looks to me like Jordan Babineaux committed some alcohol-related offense that went beyond a mere arrest.

It is not, if I am reading it correctly, substance abuse. If it was that, he would go through several intervention programs and be suspended for up to four games for a second offense. If it was for a violation of the law with substances other than alcohol, he could be suspended for up to four games.

But with alcohol-related offenses, the policy says the discipline is generally 2/17th of a player’s salary. Babineaux was suspended for one game, but he also was docked another game’s pay. The policy goes on to say: If the Commissioner finds that there were aggravating circumstances … increased discipline up to and including suspension may be imposed. Discipline for a second or subsequent offense is likely to be a suspension, the duration of which may escalate with each offense.

A look at Seahawks roster

The Seahawks really have 55 players on their roster because of the suspensions of Rocky Bernard and Jordan Babineaux. So they will have to make two more roster decisions next Monday, Sept. 8, when those players return to the active roster.

A couple thoughts there: They were able to keep both Baraka Atkins and Jason Babin, giving them 10 defensive linemen. I wouldn’t be surprised to see one of them go.

But also, maybe they kept somebody like Brandon Coutu hoping that teams fill out their practice squads and active rosters this week, then they will cut him next week and try to slide them onto their practice squad after everybody else’s is full. Or, if they happen to find a punt returner, they do the same thing with Forsett.

Still waiting …

I know you all are waiting patiently for the roster cuts, as am I. I spoke with the Hawks about 50 minutes ago, when they told me they should be sending out an email in about half an hour. That has come and gone. As soon as I get the information, I will post it up here and then do an evaluation.

Justin Forsett quotes

(On whether he will sleep well tonight…) I’m pretty sore, so I’m going to sleep like a baby tonight. In the morning, I hope I won’t get up too early. Just sleep in a little bit and see what happens.

(On how the wind affected his fumbled punt…) I didn’t put my arms together, and the ball came right through my arms. I didn’t put my elbows together, and that’s what happens when you don’t do the little things. I was ready to try to get it upfield. I tried to bounce back from it, and I went out there and gave it my all for the rest of the game, and I feel like I did.
