Peter Morelli is the referee assigned to work the Seahawks’ game at Kansas City on Sunday. My records show that the Seahawks have a 1-2 record under coach Mike Holmgren when Morelli officiates. Holmgren is 0-1 in replay challenges in those games, losing a timeout when he thought Jerheme Urban had caught a pass against Buffalo on Nov. 28, 2004. Morelli also worked the historic 2004 home loss to the Rams in which Seattle surrendered a 17-point fourth-quarter lead. Morelli previously worked a 2003 Seattle victory vs. San Francisco.

Morelli has worked six games this season and his crew is calling fewer penalties per game than any crew in the league. Coaches have a 2-1 challenge record against him, but the booth official has failed on all three challenges.

Note: I recently checked my officiating stats against the official league stats and discovered that my numbers matched exactly on assessed penalties and replay challenges, but not for the number of declined penalties. The league is showing more declined penalties than my stats show. This could be because some declined penalties aren’t showing up in the gamebooks. Whatever the reason, I’ll have to double-check those. In the meantime I’ll probably provide information on assessed penalties, since I know those numbers match the league numbers.

  1. I find it amusing that the STEALers’ owner (because they STOLE the super bowl) was fined a whopping $25K for pointing out that the officials are sometimes wrong. No simpathy here!

  2. PapaHawk says:

This guy seems to have nothing in his past that would make Seahawks fans skeptical of him. Both losses he officiated had no contreversy (with officiating). The win was a good win for the team. Maybe, since they don’t call many penalties, Ashworth should practice his holding routine…since he may need it. Hopefully the officials do not get noticed this coming game. Enjoy the BBQ in KC Mike…its a grea place also to take your boys. When I was a little boy my grandparents lived in KC and I loved it! There are some great amusement parks there and also the baseball park is quite nice.
