Wrestling: Mead, Yelm, Deer Park near-perfect in first round at Mat Classic XXIV

Tahoma had the numbers – 15 wrestlers – in the first round. Mead had the storming success.

The Panthers won eight of their 11 first-round matches while Tahoma went 8-7.

Mead’s only real blemish came when Matthew Petrini, a top seed, was upended by Union’s Cody Hershel, 7-4, in the 113 class.

In 3A, Yelm claimed wins in seven of eight classes – including Dillon and Darren Harris – while defending champion Enumclaw went 5-4.

Bio: There are natural-born wrestlers, and then there are athletes who learn to become elite wrestlers. With his exceptional work rate, Golding is the latter. And this weekend likely will be a special one as he and teammate Jordan Rogers try and become the first Mead wrestlers to win three state titles. “He has the ability to gear up for high-level competition, and he does not like to lose,” Panthers coach Phil McLean said. His record the past three seasons is 101-5.

Different venue, same result as last weekend’s district meet — the Cardinals sent 13 to the finals at their Class 1A Region I tournament Saturday at Bellevue Christian.

And the three-time defending state 1A champions crowned six champions — Fred Green (106 pounds), Austin Dodson (113), Drew Templeman (126), Shannon Maris (138), Mike Moniz (145) and Dalton Evanger (152) — and qualified 17 wrestlers for Mat Classic.

“We got some young kids we are taking to state that we did not think would get there,” Orting coach Mike Sowards said.

Wrestling: Rogers Holiday Tournament celebrates its 40th anniversary

When wrestlers hit the mats on Saturday at the Rogers Holiday Tournament, it will mark the 40th anniversary of the event.

Wrestling starts at 9 a.m. for boys and 11 a.m. for girls. Finals are expected to begin around 5 p.m.

The Washington State Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame will induct the Class of 2011 at 4 p.m. June 11 at the Holiday Inn Convention Center in Everett,

The Class of 2011 will induct ten individual who have contributed significantly to the sport of wrestling in Washington. The inductees are:

The late Robert Bennedsen-Athlete, Vashon High School
