Football: Peninsula romps over Wilson, 52-21

Neil Pierson
Staff writer

Through three games, no one has figured out how to stop Danny Welstad and the Peninsula Seahawks’ offense.

Welstad’s running and more punishing blocking from the Seahawks’ offensive line proved fatal to the Wilson Rams on Friday in a 52-21 non-league annihilation at Roy Anderson Field in Purdy.

Welstad, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound senior, rushed for three first-half touchdowns and now has 13 scores for the Seahawks (3-0 overall).

Peninsula showed no mercy to the Rams (0-3), who were coming off a blowout loss to Bellarmine Prep. The Seahawks scored on all seven possessions in the first half, starting with Welstad’s 23-yard sprint around the right side.

Football: No. 4 Bellarmine tops Wilson, 45-13

Bellarmine Prep entered the 2011 season with big expectations. A year after reaching the Class 4A state semifinals for the first time in nearly three decades, the Lions are set on making another deep postseason run.

Bellarmine Prep played like a state title contender in the first half of its 45-13 non-league victory over Wilson Friday night, but revealed its youth after halftime.

“They’re young and that kind of showed in the second half,” Lions coach Tom Larsen said. “All you can hope is that you learn from their mistakes and that you play the way we played in the first half.”

Bellarmine Prep (2-0 overall) was nearly unstoppable early, scoring points on four of its first five possessions – three touchdowns and a field goal – and defensive back John Bush returned an interception 55 yards for a touchdown halfway through the second quarter.

Softball: Wilson HS sisters toss back-to-back no-hitters

Sisters Janessa and Alex Flynn threw back-to-back no-hitters this week for Wilson’s softball team.

On Tuesday, Alex Flynn allowed no hits or walks to Capital in a 10-0 win for the Rams. It would have been a perfect game, if not for a pair of errors.

Janessa Flynn fired a no-hitter against Yelm on Wednesday, leading the Rams to a 7-0 win.

Here’s a link to the box scores. Wilson sits atop the Narrows League 3A standings with a one game lead over Capital and Yelm.
