4A boys rally for 108-107 win over 3A at WIBCA all-state game

An all-star showcase suddenly turned into a real basketball game.

That normally isn’t how it goes when the Class 4A and Class 3A boys hook up at the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association all-state game.

But as soon as the 4A squad started making shots late, suddenly a more serious expression came over the face of coach Tim Kelly, who just led Curtis High School to the WIAA state title two weeks ago.

“I said, ‘Can you play just a little bit of defense now?’” Kelly said with a chuckle.

WIBCA will induct six new members this month

Mark Williams (far left, sitting) will be inducted this month into the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Williams is a longtime assistant coach at Fife, Lincoln and Curtis high schools.

Six new members will be inducted this month into the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in two ceremonies.

On July 24 at the Kennewick Red Lion Hotel, Kamiakin’s Don Schumacher and assistant coach Pat Clark, who spent time at Gonzage Prep, North Central and Mead, will be honored.

At the Tacoma Elks Pavilion on July 26, former Auburn coach Tim Cumminings and longtime assistants Monte Walton (Sehome and Ferndale) and Mark Williams, who coached at Fife, Lincoln and Curtis, will be recognized.

Cliff Gillies, former Executive Director of the WIAA, will receive the Ed Pepple Service Award for his contributions to high school basketball. Both banquets begin with a social hour at 5 p.m., followed by dinner and induction ceremony at 6 p.m. Tickets are $30. Contact Dave Dickson at david.dickson(AT) to attend.

Basketball: 2012 WIBCA Hall of Fame class announced

From a WIBCA press release I received today:

The Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association have selected six new inductees to their Hall of Fame in July.

The Tri-Cities banquet will honor head coach Don Schumacher (Kamiakin) and Spokane assistant coach Pat Clark (Gonzaga Prep, Mead, North Central).

The Tacoma Banquet will fete head coaches Tim Cummings (Auburn) and LeRoy “Lee” Sinnes (Yelm, Mark Morris, Port Angeles).

Longtime Tacoma Assistant Mark Williams (Fife, Lincoln, Curtis) and Whatcom County assistant Monte Walton (Sehome, Meridian) will also be inducted.

Cliff Gillies, former WIAA executive director and former president of State High School Associations, will be honored with the Ed Pepple Service Award for his longstanding support of high school basketball in the state of Washington.

The Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association Girls Basketball All-State games will be played Saturday at Seattle Christian.

Class 2A vs. Class 1A, 3:45 p.m.

Class 3A vs. Class 4A, 5:30 p.m.

Tickets: $10 Adult; $8 Seniors (62 and over); $6 Children (5-11) and students age 12 and over with a valid high school or middle school ASB card ($8 without ASB)
*Children under the age of 5 are admitted free;

WIBCA Hall of Fame banquets in July

I received an e-mail about WIBCA inducting seven people into its Hall of Fame. Here’s the information:

The Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association will induct seven new members to their Hall of Fame at Whitworth University on July 22 and at Seattle Pacific University on July 29.

The Spokane banquet will honor Dave Olzendam (Medical Lake, Rochester, Coulee-Hartline, and Newport), Dwight Pflugrath (Ritzville, Mansfield, Brewster), and longtime assistant coach Toivo Piippo (St. Joseph Junior High of Richland). The Seattle banquet will fete Bill Bakamus (Toledo, Coulee-Hartline, Mark Morris), Mike Downs (Bellevue Christian), Phil Lumpkin (Seattle Prep, O’Dea), and longtime Mark

WIBCA’s regional hoops proposal turned down

Leaders from the state basketball coaches association (WIBCA) met with district directors on Tuesday to discuss the new format of the basketball state tournaments.

Since the WIAA Executive Board voted in April to change the format of the basketball state tournaments, WIBCA had been forming proposals on how to determine the final eight teams in the state tournament. (Click here for a refresher on the format of the new state tournaments.)
