Basketball: Road to the Tacoma Dome, Class 3A edition

Will Lakes High defend its Class 3A boys basketball state championship?

Just as I did during football season, I’ll break down how teams can qualify for the basketball state tournaments. Because the current state tournament format has been used only once, here’s a brief primer.

For instance, when I refer to the “regional round of the state tournament,” I mean the games that will be played on Feb. 24-25. These games will be played at sites around the state and you can see the venues for each classification here. Teams will not play in the Tacoma Dome, Yakima SunDome or Spokane Arena, depending on their classification, until the quarterfinals of the state tournament, which begin on Thursday, March 1.

CLASS 3A BOYS BASKETBALL: Road to the Tacoma Dome


Teams to state: Two
Lowdown: Six teams from WesCo and two from the Northwest Conference comprise this double-elimination tournament – two will advance to the regional round of the state tournament. The tourney begins on Wednesday (tonight).

Teams to state:
Lowdown: Metro League will send eight teams and KingCo will be represented by four teams in this modified double-elimination tournament, which begins Feb. 11. Both conferences have league tournaments that feed into the Sea-King District tournament. In the Metro tourney, top seeds Rainier Beach and Seattle Prep were upended by O’Dea and Franklin on Tuesday, which should make for some interesting pairings in the district tourney next week.
