4A Bi-District Basketball: Curtis boys, Mount Rainier girls claim crowns

Up until the end of January, Curtis High coach Tim Kelly thought repeating as bi-district boys basketball champions was out of reach.

“We hadn’t shown signs we were capable of doing that until the last few weeks,” Kelly said.

Kelly reasoned that the Vikings had been banged up – three players missed significant chunks of the season – and the team is just now returning to full strength.

“We’d been using patchwork lineups and haven’t had time to gel as a full group,” he said. “We’re just getting to that.”

The timing could not be better.

Curtis held off eighth-ranked Olympia 37-36 in the finals of the Class 4A West Central/Southwest Bi-District tournament Monday at Kent’s ShoWare Center, capturing a second straight bi-district crown.

The Vikings (20-6) are one of the hottest teams in the state, reeling off wins against No. 5 Union, No. 2 Bellarmine Prep and Olympia in the tourney. Curtis is doing it with defense.

Boys Basketball: Curtis, Olympia will meet in 4A bi-district finals

Most of the players have changed, but the approach remains the same.

A year after reaching the boys basketball state finals, Curtis High is again winning with defense.

“The one consistent thing should be effort on the defensive end,” Vikings coach Tim Kelly said after his team dispatched second-ranked Bellarmine Prep 48-41 in the semifinals of the Class 4A West Central/Southwest Bi-District tournament at Auburn High.

For the eighth time in 10 games, the Vikings held their opponent to fewer than 50 points.

“Our coach emphasizes defense,” said senior forward Darius Johnson-Wilson, one of two returning starters from last season. “We’ve got to have energy on defense.”

Curtis has had plenty of energy lately.

Since a disappointing loss to Kentwood in the South Puget Sound League championship last week, the Vikings have reeled off three straight wins, knocking off two ranked teams – they toppled No. 5 Union in the quarterfinals.

Basketball: Road to the Tacoma Dome, Class 3A edition

Will Lakes High defend its Class 3A boys basketball state championship?

Just as I did during football season, I’ll break down how teams can qualify for the basketball state tournaments. Because the current state tournament format has been used only once, here’s a brief primer.

For instance, when I refer to the “regional round of the state tournament,” I mean the games that will be played on Feb. 24-25. These games will be played at sites around the state and you can see the venues for each classification here. Teams will not play in the Tacoma Dome, Yakima SunDome or Spokane Arena, depending on their classification, until the quarterfinals of the state tournament, which begin on Thursday, March 1.

That out of the way, here’s how teams will qualify for state:

CLASS 3A BOYS BASKETBALL: Road to the Tacoma Dome

NORTHWEST DISTRICT

Teams to state: Two
Lowdown: Six teams from WesCo and two from the Northwest Conference comprise this double-elimination tournament – two will advance to the regional round of the state tournament. The tourney begins on Wednesday (tonight).

SEA-KING DISTRICT
Teams to state:
Five
Lowdown: Metro League will send eight teams and KingCo will be represented by four teams in this modified double-elimination tournament, which begins Feb. 11. Both conferences have league tournaments that feed into the Sea-King District tournament. In the Metro tourney, top seeds Rainier Beach and Seattle Prep were upended by O’Dea and Franklin on Tuesday, which should make for some interesting pairings in the district tourney next week.
