Here’s a press release on the youth national team.

No drama at Lakes High on signing day

For a third day in a row, football jerseys were laid out on tables on stage at Lakes High’s performing arts center.

This time, there was no media horde and no suspense over what school an All-American football recruit would pick. Just five football teammates and volleyball player Anitaka Knight getting the spotlight after they each signed letters of intent on Wednesday.

“Not many schools can equal this,” said USC-bound offensive tackle Zach Banner. “We had two All-Americans, two guys going to D-2 schools another going to Idaho, and that’s not all. There will be other guys that sign and other guys that walk-on.”

Banner said he had no second-thoughts since orally committing to USC on Monday.

“I’m happy,” he said, “we’ve got a top-10 recruiting class and we’ll be competing for national championships every year for the next four years.”

Volleyball: Possible changes to state tourney format, locations

The volleyball state tournaments could be on the move again, and their format could change, too.

“We’re totally up in the air with volleyball,” said Cindy Adsit, WIAA assistant executive director who oversees volleyball.

Adsit said this fall there were “issues at every site,” ranging from lengthy delays, not enough seats or restrooms, limited concessions for spectators and poor outside lighting. Some of those issues can be fixed by site managers or by moving locations. Others can only be remedied if the tournament format is changed.

In November, the 4A and 3A tournaments were staged at Saint Martin’s College and The Evergreen State College was host to the 2A tournament. The 1A, 2B and 1B tournaments were held at the Yakima SunDome.

The most pressing issue, Adsit said, is the tournament format and schedule.
