When I began work at The News Tribune in November 2007, my only real experiences with Tacoma had been covering state football and basketball games at the Tacoma Dome.
I hated the dome. Still do, actually – you try spending back-to-back-to-back 14-hour days in that dreary place.
Yet, almost five years later, I’m leaving knowing that there’s much, much more to this city than the dome. Tomorrow is my last day at the TNT. Next week, I’m moving to Phoenix with my wife and daughter. In Arizona, we’ll be close to family and I’ll face an even bigger challenge — potty-training my 2-year-old daughter.
Truth is, my time covering high schools for the TNT was coming to an end, anyway. About two weeks ago I was offered a dream job – the TNT’s beat writer for University of Washington football and men’s basketball teams. Around that time, my wife was offered a job in Phoenix. We spent a couple days debating the pros and cons of each and ultimately decided that being close to family was most important.
