Soccer: Brief glance at state semifinals, schedule

The semifinal matchups in all classifications of girls soccer and the boys soccer Class 2B/1B tournament are set.

In the Class 4A tournament, we’ve got a couple intriguing rematches. The Skyline-Tahoma game is a repeat of a 2010 semifinal that Tahoma won 1-0 and a 2009 semifinal that Skyline won 1-0.

The other 4A semifinal pairs Narrows League rivals Gig Harbor and Bellarmine Prep. The Lions won both regular-season games by scores of 2-1 and 4-0. The Tides are streaking after knocking off Edmonds-Woodway 5-1 and SPSL South champion Beamer 1-0 in the quarterfinals.

The 4A and 3A semifinals have changed locations to Sparks Stadium in Puyallup this season. The 2A and 1A matches have moved to Shoreline Stadium in Seattle. Semifinals will be played Friday and finals on Saturday.

Below, you’ll find the matchups, and I’ll fill in game times when they’re announced.

Football: Recapping the first round of the state playoffs

Well, that was fun. Let’s do it again Saturday.

The first night of the first round of the football state playoffs produced upsets – who foresaw defending 2A champion and second-ranked Tumwater going down 41-6? – a super-human performance – Interlake’s Jordan Todd rushed for 432 yards in a 49-41 win at Franklin Pierce – and the game everyone wants to see – Bellevue vs. Lakes.

And we’ve still got half the first-round schedule left for Saturday.

Here’s a brief recap of Friday night’s happenings:

CLASS 4A
Central Valley dumped defending state champion and third-ranked Ferris 23-7. There’s goes my pick to win the state title in 4A.

The Greater St. Helens League beat up on the SPSL North, with No. 9 Skyview defeating Kentwood 34-7 and Union handing No. 10 Kentlake its first loss, 31-7.

CLASS 3A
No. 2 Lakes beat Mountain View 28-0 and No .1 Bellevue easily handled Eastside Catholic 42-0, setting up an epic showdown between the two Class 3A superpowers. The game will be played 7:30 p.m. Friday at Harry E. Lang Stadium in Lakewood. Read my story on Lakes’ win for more information.

Football: Tumwater stunned by ATM in title rematch, falls 41-6

Bart Potter

First things first: Get a stop on Archbishop Murphy’s running quarterback, Hans VanderWel.

The Tumwater Thunderbirds achieved that, more or less, after the first quarter. But the T-
Birds didn’t account for the passing quarterback VanderWel or the sticky pass-defending VanderWel, and the rest of the Archbishop Murphy Wildcats followed the lead of their junior standout en route to a 41-6 victory against defending Class 2A champion Tumwater in a first-round playoff football game at Tumwater District Stadium.

The game was a startling reversal of the 2010 2A title game, when Tumwater handled Archbishop Murphy, 34-14. This year, Murphy dominated from the opening kickoff.

“That’s probably the biggest whipping we’ve had on that field in a long time,” a weary Tumwater coach Sid Otton said afterward.

On the first offensive series of the game, the 6-foot, 200-pound VanderWel had carries of 16 and 8 yards on a seven-play, 57-yard drive capped by a 17-yard touchdown run by junior running back Ricky Gordon.

Tumwater stopped the Wildcats on downs on their next possession, which reached the T-Bird 20, most of the yardage coming on a 40-yard burst by junior Alex Galgano.

Football: Interlake RB’s 432-yard effort helps Saints edge FP, 49-41

DON HUNT
Contributing Writer

Because of his small physique, Interlake running back Jordan Todd has always felt like he had something to prove on the football field.

He proved plenty to Franklin Pierce on Friday night.

Todd ran for an astounding 432 yards on 29 carries and five touchdowns in leading the Saints to a 49-41 victory over the Cardinals in a first-round, Class 2A state playoff game at Franklin Pierce High.

If that wasn’t impressive enough, Todd was suffering from a nasty cold that had him coughing and feeling queasy after the game.

“I’ve been little my whole life and I’m always trying to prove that I belong out here,” said Todd, a 5-8, 180-pound senior. “It’s made me work harder than a lot of guys. I want to be the best back on the field every game.”
