Star Track XXIX: Highlights from Friday

Some highlights from Friday’s action at Star Track XXIX. We’ll have complete recaps on the 4A, 3A and 2A state track and field meets in Saturday’s newspaper and online. And we’ll post more updates from the finals throughout the day on Saturday.

KASEN WILLIAMS CLAIMS TITLES IN TRIPLE JUMP, HIGH JUMP
Since he was a sophomore, Kasen Williams has set a goal of sweeping the high jump, long jump and triple jump at the state track and field meet.

For a couple hours on Friday at Mount Tahoma Stadium, that ambition was overshadowed by something bigger – an all-time state record.

The Skyline High School senior leaped 50 feet, 9.25 inches in the Class 4A boys triple jump at Star Track XXIX.

“As soon as I landed I was jumping up,” Williams said. “I had a feeling it was going to be over 50.”

Star Track XXIX: Live updates from Thursday’s action

UPDATE (9 p.m. Thursday)

KIRKWOOD SETS ANOTHER JAVELIN RECORD
The fierce headwinds that tormented distance runners at Star Track XXIX on Thursday evening helped Christine Kirkwood set another state track and field meet record in the javelin.

The Othello senior harnessed the gusts, hurling the javelin 167 feet, 9 inches, and captured her third consecutive Class 2A state title in the event at Mount Tahoma Stadium.

“If you catch it at the right angle,” Kirkwood explained, “the wind will carry the javelin.”
